When it is desired to expand the machine for use, the poppet 29 is pulled out of engagement with theforward hole 33 and the crank arm 26 is swung rearward until the poppet is brought opposite the rear hole 33, the poppet then being released to engage in said hole and re-lock the parts. This rearward movement of the crank arm rocks the shaft and straightens the toggles in Fig. causing the lifterto be .moved or shifted ivei'tically upward on its traclrways and swinging the type bars upward and rearward on their pivots 39 into position for use. It will be observed that this swinging movement of the type bars is whollypivotal as distinguished ti'oma bodily movement, the pivotal support of the type bars being fixed. From 2 it will be noted that while the type bars have not been brought to an exactly vertical position yet they are substantially upright and I are supported by the rest 11 above their pivots in position to be actuated to print when-the key levers 50 are depressed. latter remaining stationary, and such swinging movement clears the locking shoulders 48 from the locking plate 71, thus unlocking the type actions.
lVhen one of the printing key levers 50 is depressed the parts of the type action will be moved from the Fig. 2 positionto the position illustrated in Fig. 4:, the link 48 pulling down the forward arm of the sub-lever 16 and raising the rear arm thereof, causing the actuating pin 45 to traverse the cam slot '44 and swing the type. bar downward with an accelerating motion due to the relationship of the pin-'andslot connection between the type bar and its sublever. Such accelerating action continues until the type bar is within an inch or so of the platen and the pin has approached the end of the slot .44 and the type bar pivot 39, after which the pin begins to recede from the type bar pivot. The accelerating action is similar in results to that of the No. 10 Remington machine type bar action. In a collapsible typewriting machine, the combination of a platen shiftable to change case, a set of type bars each provided with two types, one typeon each type bar co-operating with the platen in one of its shift positions and the other type co-operating with the platen in the other of'its shift positions, a fixed segment on which said type bars are pivoted, means for actuating said type bars comprising'a set of shiftable sub-levers, and means for expanding the machine for use by moving all of the-type bars on their pivots simultaneously and:at the same time bodily shifting said sub-levers, said last recited means comprising a type bar rest settable by hand and against which the type bars are adapted to lie in both their collapsed and expanded positions. 7 5. In a collapsible typewri-ting machine, the combination of a set of type bars, a fixed support on which said type bars are pivotally mount-ed, means for actuating the type bars comprising a set of sublevers having shiftable pivots, and means for expanding the machine for use by-pivotally moving all of the type bars and at the same time automatically shifting said sub-levers and their pivots, said last recited means comprisinga type bar rest settablebyhand and against which the type bars are adapted to liein both their collapsed and expanded positions. 7 6. 10. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a type bar support formed with radial slots, a set of type bars seated in said slots, key levers, connections between said key'levers and said type bars comprising sub-levers, fulcrum arms for said sub-levers,
a second support provided with radial slots in which said fulcrum arms are seated, the slots in the two supports radiating from a common center, and means for 'detachably fixingsaid second support to said typebar support.
