Be it known that we` JAMES N. HEALD and Amen* DRAKE, citizens of the United States@ both residing -at TVorcester. in the couhty'oic Yorcester and State oi Massachuseits. have invented a new and useful Internal-Grinding Machine, of which the followis a specification.
in ilhis invention relates to a machine for producing groiind surfaces' on `metal and particularly to a machine for grinding internal surfaces. ln such machines Tit is customary to support the Work on a work spindle rotatable in fixed bearings and to mount the grinding wheel spindle on a able axially relative to the Work. During the grinding operation a slow automatic axial wheel feed is desired, while rapidinanual operation ispreferred for withdrawing the tool to the Work. Y
lt is the general object of our invention to provideimproved means for controllingr two different feedingl mechanisms, so devised that a quick change may be made from one feed to the other and that only one feeding mechanism may be connected to move the carriage at any onetime.
In the preferred form, this desired end is accomplished by the use of a'single operating lever which may he moved to render either one of two clutch connections operaperrnit gauging or removal oi tive andthe other inoperative.

BRAKE, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, .ASSIGNORS Referring to the drawings. we have shown a grinding machine comprisingr a base 2O on `which a` Work spindle 2l is rotatable ln hearings 22. The spindle is provided with a. drivingpulley 23 connected hya belt' 24 to va cone pulley 25 which, in turn, is con nected by a second belt 26 to a cone pulley 27 loose on a driving shaft 28. The shaft 28` 75 may be driven in' any convenient manner as by a belt 29 and pulleyv 30. A clutch 31 1s provided for the cone pulley 27 and* is controlled by a sliding sleeve 32 positioned by a depending arm 33 of a three-armed lever 34.
The lever 34 is pivoted at 35 on the frame 20 and a second arm 36 thereof is provided with a brake 37 adapted to engage one ofthe surfaces of the cone pulley 27. The third or upwardly extending arm 38 of the lever 34 has a pin and slot connection with ari erm 39 .fixed to a cross shaft 40. A lever 4l is .fixed to the outer end of the cross shaft and comprises an upwardly extending handle 42 and a laterally extending slotted arm 43. When the lever 42 is moved to theA lett inv plunger (Fig. Ll) holds the clutch sleeve 32 normally in its withdrawn position but permits the saine to be yieldingly moved to operative position when desired.
The work may be secured lo the spindle 2l in .any desired or convenient manner and is preferably covered during tbc grinding operationby a easing' or guard 46.
The grinding wheel W is mounted ou the end of a spindle 50. rotatable in a wheel head 5l and .dri`ven in any convenient manner as by belts 52 and The head 5l is mounted for transverse adjustment ou a 'wheel table or carriage 5d. mounted to slide on the base 20 and preferably provided ivith'a rack (not shown) engaged by a. pinion v55 (Figfi fixed to the upper end ot' a vertical feed Shaft.

The stud 7l may be positioned as shown in Fig'. S to connect the two levers, or may be withdrawn to disconneet the levers. and will be held yieldingly in either position by a spring plunger 72.
The power mechanism for rotating the shaft 58 comprises a driving shaft 73 5) continuously rotated by a belt 74 which connects a cone pulley Z5 on the shaft 73 to a small cone pulley 76 (Fig. l) on the right hand end of the driving shaft 28. The sha-ift '73 is thus continuously rotated at either one ot two desired speeds. A double clutch member 77 is keyed to the shaft 73 and is slidable to engage clutch faces on either one oit tvvo bevel pinions 78 and 79 meshing bevel rear 80 fixed to the front end of a, short slat't di. (Fig. 6). A worm 82 on the Shait 81 engages a. worm Wheel 83 (Fig. Y) which is fixed to a second clutch casing' 84 loosely rotatable on the shaft 58 but adapted to be connected thereto by an e'apansible clutch member S5 as in the device previously described. The member 85 is controlled by a clutch lever 86 mounted for engagement by the beveled. lower ergtl of the sliding' sleeve 67.

Having described the construction of our improved grinding machine", we will new describe its operation. -llhen the handle 42 is moved to the lettin F ig. `1`, or the handle Sli) 70 is pullednpw'ard, th brake is released and the Work is rotated as previously described. Vftthe same time the yolrearins GS (Fig. 8) are moved downward, causing clutch casing 84 with the shaft 58. rlhe ma,- rhine is thus connected for automatic feed and reversal of the Wheel carriage 5d under the control of the dogs 93.
When it is desired to Withdraw the wheel and stop the Work for examination or re moral, the handle 42 may be pulled to the right, thus shiftingr the clutch sleeve 6'? to connect the upper clutch casing 63 to the clutch 6ft and shaftB. and at the' same time to disconnect the Work spindle and apply the brake to the cone pulley 27, also stopping the operation ot the pump. The hand wheel 59 is immediately available vtor withdrawing the wheel carriage 54:, although it is fully disconnected and stands idle during; the automatic feedof-the carriage. lt it is desired to shift the feed and Withdraw the carriage 54 without stopping the Worlr Spindle, the stud 7l may be pulled outward to disconnect the arm 43 from the handle 70. lWhen the carriage is moved to the extreme ri eht. the dog 94.- ivill move the handle 42 to stop the Work.
The advantages of our improved construction are thus readily apparent and it will be evident that changes and modifications can be made .in our invention by those skilled in the art, without. departingg'l from the spirit and scope thereof as set forth in the claims.
