WALDEMAR DYRSSEN, F NEW YORK, N. Y.
i ELECTRODE; rnofrncroa.
Aplination ined mumbaidansen serial No. 515,357.
TovaZZ whom it may concern: i
Be it knownf-that :IjWanomAnDnssnm a citizen ofthe United States, residjngfin the eity,: county, and Statezof `New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electro'de Protectors,` of which the following is aj specification. "This invention relatesto means.V for Vpreventing sectional electrodes from burning away at the joint dueto the oxidizing action of the air and the excessive heating in this zone and the increased resistance at the joints It is customary inelectric funacepractice to feed the electrode down throughthe-roof,
and as' it burns away'fin melting theA charge i to add new sectns'the top of 'the elec- Htro'de to replace the portions burned off inside the furnace.
, I have observed that thecurrent produces an excess amount of heat` in the zone of the joint and that the electrode gradually burns fawayin thislocation'and becomes of coni siderably less diameter than theother p0rtions thereof.` `'Thisis due partly to the increased resistance a't thejoint and partly to the oxidizing effect of the atmosphere at .this point. A j
.I have also observed that afterthe elecf 3 trode enters the furnace it is not so rapidly burned away at the joint because the atmosjA phere in the furnace is non-oxidizing.4 It :is very desirable to preventthe reduction o f diameter of the electrode before it enters the furnace, it being clear that if the diameter thereof is materially reduced, an enlarged avenue of escape is established for gases of -the furnace which results inthe loss of heat and otherwise interferesmaterially withthe 0 operation ofthe furnace.
One object of my invention is to prevent the burning away of therelectrode at the joint.l Another object .is to:produce means fory protecting the electrode from the de-V 5 structive action of, the atmosphere. in the zone of the joint. Another object is to provide a sleeve adapted to readily be applied to the electrode at the 'time a new section is joined thereto. A further object is to 00nstruct, ,a protecting sleeve ofa plurality of sections which can be readily lengthened or shortened in accordance withY the position of the joint of the electrode with respect to the roof of the furnace.
Other objects will be apparent from the following description when read in connectionl with the accompanying drawings in which" 'Fig". l is a diagrammatic view showing the :position of the electrode in eleven different stages vof operation;
2 is an enlarged View in front elevai Y i tion showing part ofthe roof of the furnace and my improved protecting sleeve mounted thereon; f
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2;
` ig. 4 is a view of a modified form of the devi'cef 'j Fig.l 5l is ahorizontal section thereof,
I In the drawings the electrode comprises an upper section-e and a lower section e', the'sections bein joined to eachother by a screwthreaded p ug P.- The roof R of the furnace is provided with a suitable'opening O 'through which the electrode passesand the usual cooling 'ring C in which a circula` tion of water is maintained as is well understood 1nth,1sart. Fitting the upper face of the cooling ring 'is an elongated sleeve S comprlsing two semi-circular sections s which aredetachably secured to cach other bymeans of bolts B provided with thumb nuts N, the bolts B passing through suitable flanges. f formed en the sleeve. The sleeve is also provided with ya plurality of stifening ribs s which also assist in radiating the heat from the sleeve to the surroundin atmosphere.r Resting on top of the sleeve is an upper sleeve S formed of semi-circular sections and secured together by means of bolts B and nuts N similar to the lower sleeve The lower sleeve is provided with a base flange s2 which rests on top of the cooling ring and a peripheral flange s which engages the side walls of said cooling ring. The internal diameter of the sleeves *S and S is slightly greater than the outside diameter of the electrode E so as to permit the latter to be freely moved up and down relatively thereto. Instead of having the inner surface ofthe sleeves S and S immediately adjacent to the surface of the electrode, I may space this inner wall a greater distance away, as shown in Fig. Ll, so as to provide a chamber 8*, in the rings. S2 and S. In this form of 'device I form the sleeves with upper and lower annular flanges sshaving apertures s therein which just clear the outer surface of the electrode E.
The utility of the device will be apparent the;4 osition o v ..tion e thereto, as shown melting vdonn the Leid by iieans o a suila le holder Gr clamped ln the usual manner .to anupper portion therol It will be apparent'frorn position 1, Fig'. 1, that operation in the furnace, the electrode' rnust necessarily be lengthened n'rlf this isdone bf inserting theY plug l in the-'loiret' section o in position 2.
