PATENT ortica.

LIGHTNING; Bill).
Application filed Getober 1S, 1921. Serial-No. 508,718.
To fit/ '1U/10721y 'it may concern.
Be it known that I, MnLviN Unnicrrron, a
if/ien ol the United States, and a resident i Rensselaer Falls, in the county ot St. lawrence and State ot New York, have invented a new and lmproved Lightning' Rod, ol which the following is a description.
My invention relates to lightning rods and has tor its general object to provide 'teaturcs which in their entirety constitute a connector between the point element ot the lightningv rod and the conductor cable, as well as means to secure the point element in position on a root or the like in a manner to sustain the connector and cable raised and amply protected against the ingress ot rain to thereby prevent distortion ot the parts with the possible result of atlectingv the electrical connection, due to freezing.
The manner in whic i the above and other objects are attained will clearly appear trom the speciic description following.
Reference is to be had to the accompanyine drawings forming; a part of this specilic ation, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative ot one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation oit an einbodiinent ot my invention showing,l the saine as in use;
Figure Q is a transverse vertical section on the line 2 2, Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a vertical section on the line 3, Figure 2.
In carrying out my invention in practice, in accordance with the illustrated example, I provide an element which in practice is tubular and adapted to be disposed vertically above a root or the like, said element having' fitted or secured thereto a suitable point 11. A connector 12 is provided on the point receiving` element 10 at the lower end and presenting a loop positioned below said element sufliciently to embrace a conductor cable A.
A 'foot 13 is provided on the point element 10 and forms a covering; for the connector1 12 and the adjacent portion ot the cable A y as well as means to secure the point element in position. The sides ot toot 13 are spaced and in the illustrated example they are deiected obliquely in opposite directions as at 13 to contorni to apitched roof, there being holes 141 in the sides at the lower portion to receive screws 15 or equivalent fastening means securing; the toot to the root. It will be seen that when the toot 13 is tastened in position the cable A and the connector 12 arcdispmied directly beneath the top ot the Y toot to be 'fully projected and above the root.
In order to prevent the point element l() trom being' separated troni the 'toot 13,\said element is 'termed with an outwardly directed annular flange 1G at its lower end which is positioned beneath a short neck 17 on therioot 13, the point element extending; upwardly through said neck to a suilicient height to sustain the point 11 a proper distance above the root. The connector 12 is 'termed ot sheet metal returned on itself to present arms 152a extending into the point element 10 fitting` tightly therein or made :fast in any suitable manner.
In order to constitute the .toot 13 a clamp, I provide a clamp bolt 18 extendingv transversely through the sides of the :toot directly beneath the connector 12 and provided with a suitable nut 19, the tightening;` ot which serves to tightly bind the sides el? the toot against the connector 12, thereby aiding in the insuring ot the electrical connection between the element 10 and the cable A and at the saine time serving to hold all the parts rigidly in position.
I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment Ot my invention, I do not limit .myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the same can. be considerably varied without departure Ytroni theA spirit oit the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: i
1. In a lightning rod, point-supporting' element, a looped connector suspended on said element at the lower end and positioned below the saine to embrace a conductor cable, and a toot on said point element forming a means to secure said element in'position as well as a covering for the connector and the adjacent portion of the cable. y
i 2. In a lightning;v rod, a poirit-supporting element, a looped connector suspended on said element at the lower end and positioned below the same to embrace a conductorcable, and 'toot on said point element forming a means to secure said element in position as well as a covering' for the connector and the adjacent portion of the cable; together with means to damp the Vtoot against the con-A adapted at their lower ends tobe secured to a supportingy structure, and a connector positioned at the lower end of Said element and beneath the toot in position to engage a cable, said connector being Covered by said 'foot'.
In. a iightningrod, a poin t-siiistaining element, a connector supported at the iower end of said element7 and means 'forming a eover for said eonnei'tor; Jtogether with means to clamp Said Cover against the sides of the connector.
5. In a lightning` rod, a point-snstz'iining element, a foot thereon at the lower end presenting spaced sides adapted to be seelired to a supporting structure, means beneath said 'foot to connect said element to rho cable, said means being Covered by said foot, and transverse eiarnp inea-ns io bind ,said 'foot against the connector means.
6. in a lightning rod, a point-snstainingr element, a foot thereon presentingl spaced sides7 means Within said foot adjacent to the top to connect the said element with a eabie, said foot thinning,` a covering 'for said (1onneetor means, said foot being adapted at its lower portion to be secured to a supportinn` structure, and a transverse eianip bolt extending through the sides of the Foot beiow the connecting means and adapted to bind the sides ot the foot against said connecting' means.
