WIRE FEEDING AND CUTTING MECHANISM FOR LATCH-NEEDLE-MAKING MACHINES.

T 0 alllw hom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN A. CALDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Torrington in the county of Litchfield, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire Feeding and Cutting Mechanism for Latch- Needle-Making Machines, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates'to new and useful improvements in wire feeding and wire cutting mechanism for. latch needle making machines.
The present invention has for its object the improvement of certain features of the wire feeding and wire cutting mechanism disclosed in the pending application of John A. Calder, Serial Number 309,579. filed July 9, 1919, and assigned to the 'Torrington Company, the assignee of the present invention.
Tn this prior application, the wire is drawn from its source through suitable guiding and tensioning devices by two levers pivoted together intermediate their ends.
These levers are forced together by a sliding wedge arranged to reciprocate between their upper extremities so as to bring together the cutter bars mounted on the lower extremities ofthe levers. The operating mechanism for the sliding wedge for the lever is con structed and arranged to first give the cutter bars on the levers a slight gripping action on the wire for the feeding stroke and thereafter the cutter bars are forced strongly together to sever the determined length of the wire.
One of the objects oi. the present inventionresides in providing the pivoted levers which operate the feeding and cutting dies with adjustable shoes adapted to receive the wear and frictional contactof the sliding operating wedge.- wherebya more powerful cutting action is provided and undue wear eliminated.
Still another object of this invention resides in providing an improved adjustable mounting for the wire guide post located immediately above the cutters and through which the wire is guided to the cutters.

Another feature of this invention resides in providing an improved mounting for the wire guide in order to adjust the line of wire feed relatively to the cutter edges so that different portions of the cutting edges may be utilized to sever the wire.
These and other objects will be apparent from a perusal of the accompanying specification when taken in connection with the drawings.
Referring now to the drawing Figure 1 is a front view of the improved device;

Referring now to the drawings, the wire V7 is led from a suitable supply to the wire cutting dies where a measured length of wire is served from the stock prior to its being further formed. This feeding and cutting mechanism comprises a suitable frame or bracket 43 on which is mounted a sliding head 44. lhis head is raised and lowored'by a lever 45 formed with a rounded head/t6 adapted to extend between lugs 47 and '48 carried by the head 44, Suitable mechanism is provided, although not shown, for operating the lever 45 at the proper time.
lllountod on the sliding head 44: are the two cutting levers 52 and 53. These levers are pivoted to turn about a supporting pivot 54'. threaded into the sliding head. Each lever carries a cutter 55 adjacent the lower end thereof. and these cutters are used for not only severing the wire. but also for gripping it to feed it forwardly. The two levers 52 and 53 are pressed together at their upper ends by means of the spring 56 which accordingly operates to normally sep arate the cutters 55. The cuttersare forced positively toward each other by a sliding cam 57 formed with inclined'faccs 58 adapted to engage the wear shoes 58' and 58" carried by the ends of the adjusting screws 59, one -of said screws being carried by each lever. These wear shoes constitute one of the improved features of the present app1ithereon, said rollers having interfitting flange and grooved portions adapted to re ceive and grip the wire therebetween to hold said wire under tension.
4. A wire feeding and cutting mechanism for a latch needle making machine comprising a frame, a slide vertically reciprocable thereon, a pair of spring pressed levers pivotally mounted intermediate their ends on said slide and providedwith wire gripping and cutting dies on their lower ends, a wedge fixed to said frame between the other ends of said levers for forcing said levers outwardly on movement of said slide toward said wedge, a wear block mounted oneach lever to engage said wedge, and means for adjusting said wear block.
5. In a wire feeding and cutting mechanism for a latch needle making machine, the combination of a frame, opposed dies mount ed thereon for movement toward and from each other for gripping and severing the wire, means for guiding the wire in a plane passing across the plane of movement of said dies, said means being adjustable parallel to the cutting edges of said dies whereby to change the point along the cutting edges at which the dies bite into the wire.

In a wire feeding and cutting mechanism for a latch needle making machine, the combination of a frame, a slide vertically reciprocable thereon, opposed wire dies 1nounted on said slide for movement toward and from each other for gripping the wire, means for guiding a wire substantially transversely of the plane of such gripping movement, and means whereby said guiding means may be adjusted substantially parallel with the grip ping edges of said dies.
7. In a wire feeding and cutting mechanism for a latch needle making machine, the combination of a frame, a slide vertically reciprocable thereon, opposed wire dies H1011I1ted on said slide for movement toward and from each other for gripping the wire, means for guiding a wire transversely of the plane of such gripping movement, said means comprising a recessed block connected to said frame above said dies, a post having a tongue adjustably fitting within said recess, and a flange provided with a guide bore for said wire, and means for adjusting said post on said block, whereby to alter the point of contact of said wire with respect to said dies.
