in the county of Cerro Gordo and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hog 'Shacklers of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in shackling devices employed for handling animals, such as hogs and l sheep, in packing plants or the like.

Referring particularly to Fig. 1 it will be seen that the upper end of the rod 23 is slightly reduced at 25 for swivel connection with a collar member 26 having an eye portion 27 formed therein that is adapted for connectionVv with a hook element 28 bymeans of the link 29, the said collar 26 being further provided with a laterally extending tubular portion 30 which is adapted for slidably receiving the shank of the hook element 31 which is constructed from square stock having a circular reduced portion formed at its lower end that is threaded for the purpose or' receiving the guiding element 32 secured thereto by means of the nut 33, the said guiding element having an enlarged opening 34 formed' thereinthat is adapted for slidably engaging the second tubular member 11.
For the purpose of operatively'7 connecting the upper rod 23 and lower rod 14, there is provided a link chain 35, shown best in Fig. 1, which is connected to the lower end of the upper rod 23, as at 36, and extends downwardly to be inserted through the ishackle 21 and then upwardly to slightly project through an opening formed vin the side wall of the reducing coupler head, the projecting end being provided with a pin 37 which prevents the drawing or the said chain entirely within the reducer'v 10 and tubular body portion 5., i
Referring particularly to 3, it will be seen that the uppertubular portion 11 is provided in proximity to the cap member Y 12 with diametrically opposed longitudinally extending slots 38 and 39 which 'are of difierent lengths', the upper endsot the said slots being transversely alined 'while the lower ber 10 havingdiametrically opposed ears 11 that project outwardly through the said slots 38 and 39. There is further provided a coil Spring 42 having its upper end bearing against the inner face of the cap element 12 while its lower end bears against the disk 40. As shown in this ligure, the spring 42 bearing against this locking element will cause the same to move away from the cap 12 with the result that the ear eil projecting through the smaller slot 38 will bear against the inner endof the saine which will cause the said locking element to cant or resume a position on an angle to the longitudinal axis of the upper rod 23 thereby causing the said locking member to engage the serrated` surface 24; tor preventing movement ot the said rod 23 in a direction towards the grappling elements 17.
The operation ot' the device is as follows: Brietiy stated, the grappling elements 17 are to be positioned 'as shown inlfig. 2 in locked engagement with an animals leg after which the shackling device and the aniinal are to be Suspended upon a trolley track by means of the hook 28. The animal, in this manner, is conveyed along the track while the various preliminary operations are performed thereupon until the body arrives at a Vpredetermined point inthe trolley where there is located a second trolley track that engages the second hook element 31. f After the hook element 31 is properly engaging the second track, the iirst track terminates with or the guiding element 32 which is caused by the transferring of the weight of the bod \v as just described. It will therefore be seen that all upward pull is removed from the lower rod 14 with the result that the spiral spring 19 will cause the block 15 to move downwardly or in a direction towards the shell 6 thereby causing the grappling elements 17 to assume the position as shown in Fig. 1 with the result that the body is released and allowed to separate from the shacklingl device. The shackling device is then returned in any desired manner to the starting point of the first trolley track where it may be again employed for conveying an animal over the same.
Describing the operation more in detail,I the body portion 11 between 32 and 10 is preferably grasped in one hand of the opdevice is `associated in proximity to the animals leg whereupon an upward or outward pull is exerted upon the hook 28 which will cause the upper rod v23 to move outwardly through the aperture l?) forme-d in the cap 12. This inward movement ot the block willcause the grappling elements 17 to be partly drawn within the shell member 6 with the result that the outer edges of the apertures or openings 7 will cause the said grappling elements to assume the position as shown in l*l ig. 2 thereby securely grasping theanimals leg: It is to be understood that upward movement of the rod 23 will be allowed, notwithstanding the position ofv the locking disk 40, as shown in Fig. 3, for this locking disk will also move upwardly with the said roduntil the ears e1 are positioned in engagement with the uppertransversely alined ends of the slots 38 and 39'whereupon the said ydisk will be moved into an inoperative position and will not engagethe serrated portion 24 of the said rod. However, after the upward movement ofthe-rod 23 hasy lstopped, the spiral spring 42 will cause the locking disk 40 to again assume the position as shown in Fig. 3 with the result that downward or rinward movement of the upper vrod 23 is prevented, At this time, it will be seen that the grappling elements 17 will be prevented from changing to the position as shown in Fig. 1 on account of this locking element 40. The hook 28 is then placed in proper engagement with the trolley track, not shown. After the'body and the shackling device have been conveyed over the trolley track through thelvarious departments wherein the desired work is performed, a second trolley track is encoun` tered which operatively engages the second hook element 31 with the result that 'the shackling device is transferred from the first trolley track to the second mentioned track. The shiftingof the weight to the hook 31 will cause the hook shank to move upwardly through the tubular extension and the guiding element to slide upwardly upon the upper tubular member 11 with the result that the locking disk 40 will be moved upwardly against the tension of the spring 42 until the ears 4:1 engage the transverse almed ends of the slots 38 and 39. This vmovementv of the lock disk 40 will release the rod 23 and allow the tensioned "spring 19 to force downwardly upon theblock 15 with the result that the shackling elements are allowed to assume the positions as shown in Fig. 1, thereby releasing their hold upon the aniof the invention or the scope of the su'by joined claims.
Having thus described the invention, I claim v 1. In a device of the class described, a body portion, a tubular member secured thereto, an element slidably positioned in said body portion. grappling hooks pivotally secured to saidelement, an element slidably positioned in said tubular member, a supporting hook secured to the second mentioned element, and ileXible means operatively connecting said element for moving said grapplinghooks into their operative positions when the second mentioned element is moved outwardly of ber.-

4. In a device of the class described, a body portion, a tubular member secured thereto, a rod slidably associated with the bodyportion, grappling elements pivotally carried by said rod, a second rod slidably associated with the tubular member, a hook element carried by the second mentioned rod, and flexible means operatively connecting said rods for moving said grappling elements into their operative positions when force is. exerted upon said hooks to move the second mentioned rod longitudinally of the tubular member.
5. In a device of the class described, a body portion, a 'tubular member secured thereto, a rod longitudinally movable in said body portion, a block secured to the outer end of said rod, grappling elements pivotally carried by said block, second rod longitudinally movable in said tubular member and projecting from its outer end, flexible. means operatively connecting the inner ends of said rods for moving said grappling elements into their operative positions when the second mentitoned rod is moved outwardly of the tubular member, and means for returning said grappling elements to their inoperative position when the second mentioned rod is moved inwardly of the tubular member.
6. In a device of the class described, a body portion, a tubularl member, a coupler connecting said body portion and tubular member, an element slidably associated with said body portion, grappling hooks pivotally carried by one end of said element, a roller member associated with the other end ot said element, a rod slidably associated with the tubular member and projecting from its free end, and flexiblemeans secured to said rod slidably engaging said roller member and anchored to said coupler for causing said grappling hooks to assume their operative positions when said rod is moved outwardly of said tubular member.

In a device of the class described, a body portion, a coupler secured to one end of said body portion, a shell portion having spaced openings carried by the opposite end of said body portion, an element slidably po sitioned in said body portion, grappling hooks pivotally associated with `said element and projecting through said spaced openings, and flexible means anchored to said coupler at one end operatively connected to said rod and projecting `from said coupler whereby outward movement of said flexible means thru said coupler will cause the grappling hooks to assume their operative positions.

body portion, a tubular member secured thereto, an element slidably positioned in said body portion, grappling hooks pivotally carried by said element, a rod having a portion of its length serrated slidably positioned in said tubular member, a supporting hook carried by said rod, flexible means operatively vconnecting said slidable element and rod for causing said grappling hooks to as,- sume their operative positions when said rod is moved outwardly of said tubular, member, a locking element loosely carriedl by said tubular member, and means associated with said tubular member for causing said locking element to engage the serrated portion of said rod for preventing inward movement ofthe latter after said hooks have been moved to their operative positions.
