Application ined f mayk is,
To all 'wh-,0m t may concern:
Be it knownthat I, RALPH LANDINI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trimountain, in the county of Houghton and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automatic Signals, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to signals and has for an object the provision of a signal especially adapted for the purpose of warning of the approach of a vehicle passing through a doorway or other location, where the approach of the vehicle cannot be seen.
Another object is the provision of a novel arrangement of electric signal operating mechanism, wherein the contacts act to limit the movement of a depressible member and the contact carrying member also cooperates with guide pins to insure proper register of the parts.A
Another object is the provision of a novel arrangement of wiring or circuits, wherein the feed wires supply current to a plurality of contacts which are closed to operate separate signaling devices.
Other objects and advantages of the in vention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings: i
Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view illustrating the position of the signal operating mechanism with respect to the doorwav of a garage or other structure.
Figure 2 is a diagrammatic view showing the arrangement of the wiring.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a portion of a garage or other building and 11 the doorway of the same.
rPositioned transversely of the roadway which leads to the door is a trench or depression 12 and located within this trench and substantially flush with the surface of the roadway is a depressible member 13. Depending from opposite sides of the member 13 are substantially L-shaped ianges 13. Secured to the Hanges 13 are oppositely disposed L-shaped plates 13 forming a pair of preferably hollow members 14, which eX tend downwardly within the trench or depression 12 and each of these members 14 carry a pair of spaced contacts 15, which may be embedded in said member and liush 1920. serial Nin. 382,422'.
withthe lower :surface thereof, vor may pro'-y l ject sliglitlydbelow said surface. y
Located within the trench or depression 12 beneath each of the members 14, is a pair of spaced contacts 16, the latter being in a vertical line with the contacts 15, so that when the member 13 is depressed these contacts will engage.
In order to insure proper engagement of the contacts 15 and 16, there is provided within the trench or depression 12 upon each side of said contact a vertically arranged pin or standard 17. This pin or standard 17 is surrounded by a coil spring 18, one end of which bears against the bottom of the trench or depression and the opposite end against the undersurface of the member 14 and acts to maintain the member 13 in raised position. By this means a vehicle passing over the member 13 will depress the latter and cause the contacts 15 and 16 to engage, the last mentioned contact acting as a stop to limit the downward movement of the member 13, while the pin or standard 17 insures accurate engagement of the contacts.
Each of the contacts 16 have connected thereto a conductor 19, which are tapped onto conductors 20 leading from a battery or other source of electric energy indicated at 21. Connected to each of the contacts 15 are conductors'22, the conductors from one pair of contacts being connected to a horn or other signal located within the building and indicated at 23. The conductors 22 from the other pair of contacts lead to a horn or other signaling` device 24, which is preferably located upon the outside of the building.
By this means, a vehicle passing tllrough the doorway will first act to depress the member 13, which is located a suitable distance yin the path of the doorway and sound the alarm both inside and outside of the building, so as to give warning of its approach. It is of course obvious that the operating mechanism may be placed upon the inside of thev building to give warning of an out going vehicle, or, one of the devices may be placed upon the inside and one upon the outside with a single pair of contacts operated by each device and connected to a signal upon the inside and outside of the building.
The invention is susceptible of various other changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall Within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is A device ol the class described comprising a depressible member, substantially L- shaped flanges depending from opposite sides of said depressible member, a pair of oppositely disposed L-shaped plates secured to said lianges, a stop disposed beneath said depressible member, a plurality of pins carried by said stop and positioned between said Lshaped plates, coil springs surrounding said pins and exerting` a pressure be tween said stop and said plates, and a plurality of electric contacts carried by said stop and said L-sliaped plates.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
RALPH LANDINI.
