Cnowm., a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Brookl in, county of Kings, city vand State of ew York, have made a certain new and useful invention relating to Tape Moistening and Severing Machines, of which the following is a specification, taken in connection with the accom-l pan ing drawing.
T is invention relates especially to machines for severing and moistening gummed tape or printed labels which may be made u in perforated strips in roll form forapplication to packages or' articles. One or more rolls of such perforated paper or cloth tape which may be previously gummed may be'arranged on the machine and a strip from each roll may be led into engagement with a feed roll, the operation of which is manually controlled so that it is only intermittently operated when the perforated labels or strip material is to be fed forward over the feed table. Beyond this feed roll a continuously operating pulling or severing roll may be arranged to feed forward the strip and to sever the same at the adjacent line of perforations when the feed roll stops. The severing roll or other device may be arranged in connection with a moistening or gumming roll to render the strip material or printed label adhesive before it is delivered upon a corrugated or other delivery table, for example.

The machine may be provided with a standard or base 1 to which the side plates or frame members 2 may be secured in any desired way. An outer removable frame member 3 may, if desired, be vsuitably connected to the base or adjacent frame member and assist in supporting the elements and moving parts, such as the shaft or support .26 on which the one or more supply rolls 25 of tape or labels may be arranged and supported. A number of such supply rolls of perforated gummed tape or labels may be supported side by side and preferably separated by intermedia-te spacing disks or members 24, suitable end plates 27, 28, being preferably mounted on the support so as to yieldingly press the rolls together by the action of the Spring 29 when the set screw 30 in the hub of the plate 27 has been adjusted. In this way as many as four or more strips of such gummed or ungummed tape or perforated labels may be led through the machine and severed along such perforated lines of .severance as 83 so as to form separate printed labels or tape strips for application to packages.l The moving parts of the machine may be operated in any desired way and for some purposes it is advantageous to have an electric or other motor 4 mounted in any convenient position on the base of the machine and as indicated this motor may have its pulley 5 connected f by the belt 6 with the drive pulley 7 on the drive yshaft 85.
The tape strips may be led along the feed table 82 and beneath the guide roll or device 23-so as to be engagedby a feed roll such as 18, which may be mounted to cooperate with this feed table and feed the strips along the same in connection, if desired, with a feed presser 31 which may be yieldingly forced against the feed roll and be provided with a rubber or other yielding face 32. This presser may have its shaft mounted in the arms 19 secured to the rock shaft 20 and the releasing lever 22 may be connected to one of these arms and normall actuated by the spring 21 to force this flied reer against the feed roll and ensure t e proper grip upon the paper strips. This feed roll which may be mounted on the feed shaft 15 is preferably intermittently power operated or controlled in its operation so as to feed forward one or more strips. These rolls may all be positively driven from the drive gear of the machine, if desired, and for` this purpose as indicated in Fig. 3, the shaft 48 of the water roll may be providedI with a gear 45 with which the gear 43 may mesh and be engaged by a change gear 42 on the adjustable stub' shaft 50 mounted within the slot 51'and also supporting the gear 41 rotating in unison'with the gear 42 and meshing with the r 9 on the main shaft 54. The shaft46 on which the `pulling` roll 57 -is mounted may be provided with a pinion 44 meshing with the .gear 43 and as shown in Fig. 6 the gears 62, 63 and 64 may drive the moistening and` cooperating presser rolls from the water roll, 1f desired. In this wa the motor of the machine may continuo y operate the pulling and meistening rolls while the slip clutch connection between the feed roll and its gearing makes it possible to'restrain the normal tendency of this gearing to operate lthe feed roll except when the actuating handle or lever is moved by the operator. Under these circumstances the feed roll rotates through a suicient distance to feed forward a length of tape so that as indicated in Fig. 5 the end 83 of each label or tape strip may be fed forward' until the line of severance 83 arrives at substantially this same position. In the meantime the pulling and moistening rolls which may sometimes be slightly underspeeded so that as soon as they engage the tape strips they pull the same forward at a slightly reduced rate, continue to operate after the feed roll stops, and this further rotation of the pulling rolls exerts suilicient tension on the tape strips so that they are pulled apart or severed along their weakened portions or lines of severance, as for example, between the printed labels on the strips. In this way accurate severance of the labels is always secured even when because of slight irregularity of feeding and so forth, the ends of these tape strips move forward or backward slightly from the predetermined or pulling the mid position between the feed roll and roll. There is thus no substantial danger that impro r severance will occur and of course 1f or any reason such as wearing of the feed roll or slipping thereof, the tape ends get too far out of the desired alignment, they can be manually adjusted asmdicated in Fig. 7 by releasing the feed presser roll 31 and manually pushing forward or backward one or lmore of the tape ends. F ig. 7 also indicates a desirable variation in this device which may be effected by spacing the pulling and -moistenmg rolls somewhat more closely together so that still shorter lengths of gummed labels or tape strips may be handled effectively by the machine. If desired, of course, a less number of supply rolls of wider tape or labels may be used in the machine and if it is desired' to handle different packages one or more of th'ese label strips may be manually withdraw-n from the feed roll so as not to be fed forward thereby so that the machine may be very readily and quickly converted to deliver a greater or less number of strips within the limits of its capacity.

means to mechanically operate said feed roll vcomprising a slip clutch and a detent to intermittently allow said feed roll to feed said label strips ,forward through substantially the distance between adja'eent rforations and' then hold said label strips to effect the severance thereof through the continued operation of said moistening devices.

In severing and moistening machines for severing, moistenineand delivering individual perforated la ls, a support to carry such perforated, gummed, labcl strip, a feed roll to engage said labels, continuously operating, pull' and moistening devices to engage said abels beyond said feed roll and meisten the same, and means to mechanically operate saidv feed roll to intermittently. allow said feel roll to feed said label strip forward' through substantially the distance between adjacent perforations and then hold said label strip to effect the severance thereof through the continued operation of said moistening devices.

In severing and moistening machines for severing .and moistening perforated strips, a feed table and' a cooperating feed device to engage said strip, continuously operating Severin devices to engage said strip beyond sai feed device and meisten the same, and manually controlled means to mechanically operate said feed device comprising change gearing to regulate the amount of movement of said feed device and V"intermittently feed said strip forward through substantially the distance between perforations`and their hold said strip to effect the severance thereof through the continued operation of said severing devices.

In severing and moistening machines for severing and moistening perforated strips, a feed device to engage said strip severing devices to engage said strip beyond said feed device, .and manuallycontrolled means to mechanically operate said feed device comprising change gearing to intermittently feed said strip forward through substantially the distance between perforations and then hold said strip to effect the severance thereof through the operation of said severing devices.
6. In severing Yand moistening machines adapted for use with perforated pager tape, a manually controlled feed roll l' an rated portion and means to readjust said strip with respect to said feed devices.-

In severing and moistening machines adapted for perforated gummed paper tape a gripping, pulling severing device, a feed roll to feed material to said severing device and means to mechanicall operate said feed roll comprising a stop sk having'a stop member, a manually actuated handle and a connected control devicehaving a detent adapted to be moved into the path of said stop member.

In severing machines adaptedfor perforated gummed paper'tape, a 'pping pulling severing device, a feed ervbce to feed material to said severing device and means to mechanically operate said feed device comprising a manually actuated control device to limit the operation of said feed device to effect a substantially predetermined feedin action.
10. n severing or moistening machines for gummed paper tape a feed roll and yieldable means to me `nically operate said feed roll comprising an interchangeable stop disk having spaced sto members, adjustable gearing between sai stop disk and said feed roll to regulate the relative movement of said feed roll and stop disk, a manual actuating handle and a cooperating pivoted lcontrol device having a plurahty of detents adapted to` be moved alternatively into the path of said stop members and a spring to normally bring one of said detents into holding engagement with said -stop members. In severing or moistenin machines for tape, a feed roll and yieldab e means to mechanically operate said feed roll comprising a stop disk having spaced stop members, adjustable gearing between said stop disk and said feed roll to regulate the relative movement of said feed roll and stop disk, a manual actuating handle and a cooperating controll device having a plural-4 ity of detente adapted to be moved alternatively into the ath of said sto members.
