Description
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JOHN H. VICKERS, OF NORWICH, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED INHALERS AND DENTAL PROPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,730, dated January 20, 1874 application filed October 10, 1873.
' such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs,whi ch form part of this specification.
This invention relates to the combination of that character of dentists mouth-pieces used for inhaling gas, and dentists props used for propping open the jaws, in such manner that, upon withdrawing the mouth-piece from the face after administering the gas, the prop will remain in the mouth, holding the jaws apart for the dentists operations.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved mouth-piece and prop when screwed into the usual metallic plate used to fit over the mouth. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of mouthpiece and prop detached therefrom. Fig. 3 is the prop with my spring attachment.
Like letters in the drawings indicate like parts.
From a dentists ordinary mouth-piece, A B
i A, used for inhaling gas, manufactured from wood, rubber, or other proper material, I cut out the section B, running through the center of the same, to the depth of the base 0 C. The section cut away should be about one-half inch in width in ordinary-sized mouth-pieces. In such center space so formed I construct the prop B to fit closely and adjust easily. The
prop B is made of hard wood or other proper material of sufficient toughness to hold the jaws firmly apart, and is formed with a circular channel-way, E, lengthwise through the center of the same, such channel being for the admission of the gas, or for the passage of a gas-tube, if thought preferable to have a tube, part of A. A running through E, and connected with A A at d d of the base (3 O. The top and bottom 0 O of said prop B is made oval to correspond with the formation of the mouthpiece A, and to receive the bearing of the jaws when they are clasped together. On the bot- -tom of the prop B, at K, I afiix the spring I with its plate H, as shown. \Vhen the combined mouth-piece and prop is inserted in the mouth, the plate presses under the jaw by the power of the spring I, thus holding theprop in its proper position in the mouth when the mouth-piece is withdrawn.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ise 1. The prop B, in combination with the mouth-piece A A, when constructed substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
2. The spring I with its plate H, in combination with the prop B, substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of September, 1873.
JOHN H. vionnns.

WM. H. SHIELDS.
