Q GEORGE L. KOUNS, OF NFV ORLEANSLOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COFFEE-ROASTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,690, dated January 5.20, 1S74; application tiled DecemberV 22, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. Konus, of `New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and in the State of Louisiana, have invented certain. `new and useful Improvements in Coffee- Roaster; and do hereby declare that the folv lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof7 reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this speciication.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a machine `for roasting coffee and different kinds of nuts, such as peanuts and chestnuts, as will be here inafter more fully set forth, the object being to secure uniformity in roasting.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction. and operation, referring to the `annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a transverse vertical section, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal vertical section, of my improved coffee-master.
A represents the base upon which the roaster is secured. B represents the outer casing, the top of which is hinged at fr, and which opens lin a line, as shown at a:v y, this manner of opening being for the double purpose of charging and discharging` the roasting-cylinder C. The roastingcylinder C is provided `With a sliding door, E,`Which is opened for putting in the material to be roasted, and for taking it out when roasted, and to be closed While the roasting is being effected. Through the center ofthe roastin g-cylin der C passes a line, D, which y is open at both ends, and one end of the flue projects beyond the end of the cylinder, and is provided With a circumferential ange, a.. b is the central shaft upon Which lthe cylinder is mounted, and which is secured by a triangular spider, cl, at each end of the flue D. f represents a transverse partition in the casing B, interposed between the head of the cylinder (l and the iange c. This partition is also cut diagonally on the line .r y, one-half of the partition being attached to the main part of casin g, and the other half to the cover. This arrangement is-for the purpose of compelling the products of combustion to pass around the cylinder G through the iue D into the chamber formed by the partition f and the end of the casing. In this chamber it passes down between inclined plates ce, and out through the chimney G or fine H, as the damper L is turned either to the right or left. This damper is more especially adapted when solid fuel is used, although I do not confine myself to any particular kind of fuel. y l
The roaster thus constructed is heated by any suitable means. The heat and products of combustion pass into the casing B through a series of tubes directly under the revolving` cylinder, and, completely enveloping the same,
enter the ilue D and pass through the same longitudinally into the chamber formed at one end of the casing by the partition f, from whence they pass out through the chimney G or flue H, as desired. By thus allowing the products of combustion to passlongitudinally through the center of the roasting-cylinder, the -article Within the same becomes more evenly roasted to the desired degree.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a coffee and nutroaster the roasting cylinder C, provided With the iiue D, in combination with the casing B, having partition j', substantially as and for the' purposes herein set forth. y j
2. The casing B cut, as shown in Fig. 1, at w y, and provided with partition f, inclined plates c c, damper h, chimney Gr, and liuc H, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 22d day of November, 1873.
GEO. L. KOUNS.
Witnesses J. B. WILLIAMs, A. BRADY.
