Be it known that I, Gnonon lilhwrnzoonmis, citizen of the United Statcs residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sausage-- Linking Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sausage linking machines, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved machine of this character, having means operating to shape the filled easing into links and also provided with means for twistingthe links with respect to each other to form a twisted connecting portion between adjacent links.
it further object is to provideimproved twisting means forthe links which will operate to twist one of the links in one direction and the next adjacent link in the opposite direction, so that the coni'iecting portions between the links will be alternately twisted in opposite directions.
A further object is to provide an improved machine of this character, which will be simple,.durable, cheap and compact" in construction and effective and efficient in operation. To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects as will appear the invention con sists in the features of novelty in substa r tially the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings illustrating this invention, and in which I Figure 1 is side elevation oi" a of a machine of this character.

After the casing has been divided into links by the element 16 and as the links are advanced by the conveyor belt 13. one of the links will pass into the recess 35, between the surfaces 30 supported by the elements 21.-22. after which the elements 2l22 are reciprocated with respcct to each other and in opposite directions to twist the link disposed therebetween and thereby twist the connecting portion between adjacent links. This is accomplished by reason of the fact that the yielding surfaces 30 will en age opposite sides oi the link. .Vhen the elements 21-22 have reached the limit of their reciprocating movementin one direction, the directionol' movement will be reversed at which time the ecess 36 of the other yielding surface will be positioned as shown in Figure at to receive the next adjacent link and as the direction of movement of the elements 2l22 will be reversed with respect to each other, the next link which has been fed from the belt will be twisted in a direction opposite to the direction of twisting of the previous link, so that the connecting portion between the next two adj a cent links will be given a twisting movement in a direction opposite to the direction of twist of the next previous link. In other words, the links will be alternately twisted first in one direction and then in the opposite direction; I
Any suitable means may be provided for reciprocating the elements 2122, such as a crank shaft 37 journaled in suitable bear-v ings upon the supporting structure. This shaft 37 is provided with cranks 38-39 connected respectively by means of links lO-- il with the elements 2l22. The points of connection of the links 4t04.-1 with the respective elements are preferably formed by means of extended laterally projected ends 42%3 ot the links, so as to permit the elements 21.22to be shifted laterally with respect to each other and with respect'to the links 40-4t1 during their reciprocating movement so as to permit these elements to be, separated suflicientry that when the direction of movement is reversed they will not engage the link which has just inits the surtaces 30 to be moved away from the work.
The lateral shitting movement may be accomplished. in any suitable manner but preferably by means of cams 41445. disposed on opposite sides of the member 21 and adja cent opposite ends of the surfaces 30 and similar cams 46-4t7 connected with the ole ment 22. These members 2l '22 respectively pass through the openings 25-26 in the guide blocks 2324l.,one pair oil each guide blocks being arranged adjacent each end of the elements 2122 and in positions that the cams 44 l6 at one end of the elements will co-operate with one pair of guide blocks and the cams 453-417 at the other end ot'the ele ments 21-22 will cooperate with the other pair of guide blocks. so that when the cams engage the respective guide blocks the members will be respectively given lateral move ments with relation to each other. Obviously the respective cams on the members 21.22 are so arranged that whenone ofthe cams is active the other will remain inactive.
The cams 44 and 46 are provided for moving the elements 2122 laterally in one direction while the cams 45 i7 are provided for moving the elements in the opposite direction.
As a means for assisting in holding the elements 2l22 in position so that the lateral strain will not displace the members during the twisting movement any suitable means may be provided. To that end there may be provided a guide or track 4C8, which is adjustably secured by means of bolts 49, passing through suitable slots 50 into the supporting structure. A roller 51 is carried by the element 21 and is adapted to pass first on one side and then on the other side of the track 4-8 during the reciprocation of the member 21. A similar guide or track 52 is secured by means 0t fastening bolts passing through suitable slots at to the supporting structure 10. Aroller 55 is carried by the element 22 and is adapted to passfirst on one side and then on the other side of the track 52. These rollers 51 and .55 and the tracks 4-8-52 are so arranged with respect to each other that when one of the rollers passes behind the respective track the other roller willpass in front of its track, as shown more clearly in Figures 3 and 4. i
By the provision of the adjustable guide blocks-25. the elements 21 -22 may be adjusted laterally withaespe ct to eachother to vary the distance between the yielding sure faces 30 so as to compensate varying diam eters of the links and when the partsare 7 -41 also permit of such lateral adjustment,
The shaft 37 may be rotated in anydesired or suitable manner preferably from a drive shaft 56, which receives itsmotion from any suitable source perferably through the medium of a pulley 57, and the shaft 56 is connected with the crank shaft 37 through the medium of intermediate gearing 585960.
It is thought that the operation of this machine will be clearly understood from the foregoing but briefly stated it is as follows;
Assuming theparts to be in the position shown in Figure 2, and assuming that the casing has been'fed forward upon the belt 13 to be divided by the element 16 into links, and that the links project over the portion of the belt which passes over the pulley 11, so that one ofthe links will be disposed in the recessed portion 36 on the element 21, and that motion is imparted to the crank shaft 87. In the position shown in Figure 2, the element 21 has reached the limit of its forward movement, while the element 22 has reached thelimit of its backward movement. Further motion to the shaft 37 will cause the elements 21-22 tomove in the directions indicated by the arrows in Figure 2. It will therefore be manifest'that inasmuch as a link will be disposed between the yielding surfaces 30 of the elements 21-22, and when motion is imparted to reciprocate them in the directions of the arrows in Figure 2,'the surfaces will engage the link to-twist the latter, the roller passing in frontjo'f the track 52 will restrain the element 22 against lateral movement and the roller 51 passing behind the track 48 will permit of a slight lateral movement of the element 21. As soon as the elements 2122 have reached the limit of their movements in one direction, the cranks 3839 will pass over the center of the shaft 37 and the direction of movement of the elements 21-22 will be reversed. In the meantime, however, the links will have been advanced so that the twisted link will drop out from between the surfaces 30'to permit anotherlink to pass therebetween and to be t 'istcdin the opposite direction.
This operationis continued so that the links will be'twisted first in one direction and then inv the other direction so long as the links are fed between the elements 21.- 22.

A machine of the character described embodying meansfor feeding the filled casing, means for dividing at spaced intervals the material in the casing to form connected links, means embodying opposed and oppositely recip'rocable elements adapted to engage the link on opposite sides and alternately twist the successive links to twist the portion of the casing intermediate theends of adjacent links. means for reciprocating thesaid elements, means for laterally shifting the said elements with relation to each other, and means for restraining the elements against lateral movement during predetermined portions of the reciprocating motion, the last said means embodying a track and roller.

A machine of the character described embodying means for-feeding the filled cas ing, means for dividing at spaced intervals 7 the material in the casing to form connected links, means embodying opposed and oppositely reciprocable elements adapted to engage the link on opposite sides and alternately twist the successive links to twist the portion of the casing intermediate the ends of adjacent links, means for reciprocating the said elements, means for laterally shifting the said elements with relation to each other, and means for restrainng the elements against lateral movement during predetermined portions of the reciprocating motion, the last said means embodying tracks and co-operating rollers individual to the said elements.

A machine of the character described embodying means for feeding the filled cas ing, means for dividing at spaced intervals the material in the casing to form connected links, means embodying opposed and oppo sitely reciprocable elements adapted to engage the link on opposite sides and alternately twist the successive links to twist the portion of the casing intermediate the ends of adjacent links, the work engaging surface of the said elements being continuous in the direction of reciprocation of said elements, and means for reciprocating-the said elements, the said elements embodying yieldable work engaging portions.

A machine of the character described embodying means for feeding the filled casing, means for dividing at spaced intervals the material in the casing to form connected links, means embodying opposed and oppo sitely reciprocable elements adapted to engage the link on opposite sides and alternately twist the successive links to twist the portion of .the casing intermediate the ends of adjacent links, said elements including work engaging surfaces which are continuous in the direction of reciprocation of the elements, means for reciprocating the said elements, and means for laterally adjusting the said elements one with respect to the other to compensate varying diameters of links. v

A machine of the character described embodying means for feeding the filled casing, means for dividing at spaced intervals the material in the casing to form connected links, means embodying opposed and oppositely reciprocahle elements adapted to en.- gage the link on opposite sides and alter nately twist the successivelinks to twist the portion of the casing intermediate the ends of adjacent links, and means for reciprocating the said elements, portions of the work engaging surface of the said elements being shaped to form enlarged entrance epenings for the reception of the links between said surfaces.-

A machine of the character described embodying means for feeding the filled casing, means for dividing at spaced intervals the material in the casing to form connected links, means embodying opposed and oppositcly reciprocable elements adapted to engage the link on opposite sides and alter nately twist the successive links to twist the portion ofthe casing intermediate the ends of adjacent links, and means for reciprocating the said elements, the said elements emhodying yielding work engaging surfaces, said surfaces being shaped to form enlarged entrance openings for the reception of the links between the said surfaces.
15 A machine of the character described embodying means for feeding the filled casing means for dividing at spaced intervals the material in the casing to form connected links, means embodying opposed and oppo sitely reciprocable elements adapted to enthe link on opposite sides and alternately twist the successive links to twist the portion'of the casing intermediate the ends of ad acent links, means for reciprocatlng the said elements, means for laterally shift the said elements one with relation to the other at predetermined points in the sitely reciprocableelem'ents adapted to enthe link on opposite sides and alternately twist the successive links to twist the portion of the casing intermediate the ends of adjacent links, means for reciprocating the said elements, and means for laterally each other and during their reciprocating movements, the last-recited means embodying opposed cams and guides operatively related to each of the said elements, the ams and guides of each element being alternately rendered active and inactive by the recipro eating movement of thejrespective elements.
