PATENT JAMES S. HAGERTY, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRACK-CLEARERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,670, dated January 20, 1874; application filed ecember 8, 1873.
To all whom it mag] conccrn:
Be it known that I, J AMES S. Hnennr Y, of Baltimore city and State of Maryland, have invented a new and Improved SelfAdjusting Track-Cleaner; and I do hereby declare that tion of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section. Fig. 2 is a cross-section.
The invention relates to means whereby the dust, dirt, snow, or other obstacles which are found upon railway-tracks may be speedilyand effectually removed, in advance of the wheels, while all liability to fracture or dis- A A represent a railroad-track; B, the car- On the ends of the latter are subjacently attached the lugs D I), having a groove obliqned toward the wheels. In this groove is pivoted a bar, E, which, conseqnently, is inclined backward, rests on the bottom 0 and is prevented from lateral play by the lug sides 0 0 At the lower end of this bar is pivoted, on a forward incline, the
stock F, that receives a scraper, G. As the car moves forward the weight of the bar E, stock F, and scraper G retain the latter in contact with the top of rail, and cause it to displace any ordinary obstacle, while a large stone or other object of large dimension or weight, and presenting an unusual resistance, causes the arm E to lift the scraper G from the track and over the obstacle. When the car is running in an opposite direction, the jointed stock raises the scraper over anything that may come in its path.
I am aware that a cleaner consisting of a jointed bar, two springs, and a guide-rod for each rail is well known to the public.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a scraper, G, of the stock F, bar E, and grooved lug D, the stock inclined forwardly and jointed to the bar, and
the bar inclined rearwardly and jointed to the lug, as and for the purpose specified.
JAMES S. HAGERTY. Vitne-sses:
