To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoHN H. HUNT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Dayton, county of Montgomery, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ignition Systems, of which the following is a full,'clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to ignition systems for internal-combustion engines j and has among its objects the provlsion of spark shower ignition for engine starting and and single spark ignition for engine running, such ignition being provided for by one ignition coil cooperating with a timer or a trembler. More particularly it is an object to reduce the inductance of the cell when the trembler is connected so that the trembler may be operated magnetlcallyrb an ignition coil aving relatively 1g inductance.
Other and further objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing,
wherein a preferred embodiment of the present invention is clearly shown.
The figure of the drawing is a wiring diagram of a preferred cm of the invention.
In the drawing, a battery 20 grounded at 21 furnishes current for ignition through switch 22, wire 23, primary 24 of coil 25, switch contacts 26, 2 28, wire 29, timer grounded at 31. A condenser 32 grounded at 33 is connected in arallel with timer 30. The secondary 34 o coil 25is grounded through batter 20, and is connected with distributor 35 or distributin sparking impulses to grounded spark p ugs of an engine (not shown).
The trembler circuit includes contact grounded at 41 and cooperating with contact 42 mounted on armature 43 pivoted at 44. Contacts 40 and 42 are normally maintained in engagement by spring 45. A con denser 46 is connected in parallel with contacts 40, 42. Armature 43 is so located as to be ma netically attracted by coil 24 when energize so as intermittently to break the trembler circuit as will be described. Wire 47 connects armature 43 with switch contact 48. Wire 50 connects contact 49 with an intermediate turn 51 of windin 24.

The timer 30 Wlll be rendered inoperative, but a ortion of primary coil 24 will be energize to attract armature 43 against the tension of spring 45 intermittently to break the trembler circuit. In this manner a series of sparking impulses will be induced in rapid succession in secondary 34 to produce a shower of sparks at one of the spark lugs, depgnding on the status of the distri utor.
here the primary of an ignition coil has sufiicient turns to provide satisfactory ignition for the low engine speeds, the regular timer being used to time the coil discharge, such a coil has not been found satisfactory to operate a trembler for the spark shower which is useful to enable easy starting. 1 have found that if the inductance of such a coil be reduced, then the coil will operate satisfactorily in conjunction with the trembler. In the preferred form of m invention, I obtain this reduction of coil inductance when the trembler is brou ht into operation by connecting the trem ler and battery in series with a portion only of the primary turns. The number of turns emplo ed will of course vary with difi'erent C01 s.
While the form of mechanism herein shown and described constitutes a preferred form of the embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that other forms might be adopted, all coming within the sco e of the claims which follow.
hat I claim is as follows:
1. In an ignition system, the combination with a. current source and an ignition coil having primary and secondary windings; a timer; a trembler in magnetic relation to said coil; and means for connecting the coil, timer, and current source or for connecting the trembler and current source with the coil to operate the trembler with a. reduced inductance in the coil.
2. In an ignition system, the combination with a current source and an ignition coil having primary and secondary windings; a timer; 8. trembler in magnetic relation to said coil; and means for connecting all of the primary turns of the coil, with the timer of the primary turns of the coil.
