PULP BLEAGHEB..
Application led June 17, 192.2. Serial No. 569,177.
T all whom. it may concern: f y movable for ready replacement when worn. Be it known that l, PHILIP K. FLETCHER, The cylinder 9 is suspended from a Hoor l a citizen of the United States of America, 12 to which the suspension rods 10 are seresiding at Al ena, in the county of Alpena cured by anged brackets 13 and in the iloor and'State of ichigan, have invented cer# 12 at a point vertically above the socket 3 60 tain new and useful Improvements in Pulp is mounted a bushing 14 which forms a bear- Bleachers, of which the following is a speciing for the shaft 15 of ascrew 16. rlhe shaft ication, reference being had therein to the 15 is driven by any suitable gearing such accompanying drawings. for example as the bevel gears V1'7 and 18, This invention relates to a device for the gear 17 *being secured to the shaft 15 05 causing thorough agitation of pulp within and the gear 1,8 being secured to a shaft 19. a tank containing sto k ci high consistency At the lower end of the screw 16; is and is primarily intended for the bleaching mounted a collector member consisting of a of pulp used in the manufacture of paper.` Spirally curved sheet of metal 20 secured to The principal object oi the invention is the screw 16 by suitable brackets 21. The. 70 to avoid the clogging commonly causing diouter end of the spiral lies closely adculty in the operation of machines of this jacent to the lower end of the tapering p0rtype. v tion 8 of the base and this outer end is co'n-v A further object of the invention is to innected with the inner end by a scraping.- 20 sure the agitationo. all portions of the blade 22 which preferably lies closely ad.- y75 pulp so that no part of the pulp within the jacent to the floor 4. tank will be lett outside of the range .of As the shaft 15 is rotated clockwise as operation of the agitatin means. indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2, any ma- Additional objects of t e invention will terlal resting upon the floor 4 is collected appear in connection with the description ofwbythe spira member 20 and drawn inward 80 the embodiment illustrated' in the eccomi toward the shaft 15 and the screw 16. Ro-
panying drawings, in whichrv v tation of the screw 16 within the cylinder Figure 1 is a central vertical section; 9 causes an upward movement of the stock Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line within the cylinder, additional stock being im lI--H of Fig. 1, and drawn in at the bottom as the stock in the 85 Fig. 3 is an elevation of the lower portion cylinder is forced out at the top. Pulp placed of the device, the upper portion being broken within the tank falls to the bottom where away. it is 4drawn in by the action of the rotating A woodenl tank 1 is provided with a base lcollector 20 and the pulp is carried upward 2 preferably of concrete, with a bearing through the tube 11 and the cylinder 9. 90 socket 3 set in the center of its door 4 and Diiculty has been hitherto experienced with a suitable valve 5 in position to close an in the operation of a screw conveyor vin a outlet 6. After the tank 1 s placed in posimass of wet pulp because of a tendency of tion upon the base 2 the joint between the the pulp to become clogged inthe space 40 two members may be made liquid-tight by a within which the screw operates. To obviate cement seal 7. The oor Llis made circular this difficulty the lower end of the cylinder as illustrated .in Fig. 2, the diameter of the 9 is given an opening smaller than its aver# floor being somewhat less than the diameter age diameter by the use of the tube 11 which of the tank 1. -The side 8 of the base 2 is has an inside diameter only a little greater formed with an upward slope and the seal than the diameter of the screw 16. m0 portion 7 is given a similar slope so that Pulp gathered by the collector '20 is forced the inner wall of the tank will be free from by the screw 16 through the narrow tube 11 obstructions through its entire extent. beyond which the conveyor tube 9 is larger cylinder 9 is suspended ywithin the tank by to allow the pulp to expand. By this means sus nsion rods 10l with its lower end at a clogging of the tube is avoided since only as y slig t elevation above the door 4 of the base much pulp can be drawn into the cylinder and within the lower end of the cylinder 9 9 as will pass through the narrow tubell. is mounted a tube 11 to vform. a contracted The scraper 22 insures the removal from o ening for the lower end -ot the cylinder.v the floor 4 of any pulp which may reach the is tube 11 will preferably be made rebottom and the collector member 20, by u@ reason of' ite spiral shape carries into the center any pulp which may slide down the.`
slo side 8.
s te pulp is forced out at the top of the tube by the screw 16, it will be carried in all directions by the vwhirling movement produced .by the screw 16 and the pulp will dually settle downward into tbe base 2 until it 'comes again within the range of action of the collector member 20.
lt will be seen that there has been provided a mechanism havingthe particular features of advantage before enumerated but which obviously is susceptible oi modication in its form, proportion, details of construction and arrangement of parts .without departure from the principle involved or the sacrice ol any of its advantages. rlhe invention is therefore claimed in any of its forms' or modications within the legitimate and valid scope of the appended claims.
ll claim:
1. A machineof the type described comprising a tank, a centrally arranged vertical.
cylinder suspended `Within the tank with its lower end spaced from the door of the tank, a screw mounted for rotation co-axially with collector member said cylinder, and a spiral in presence o Leonce@ adjacent to the door of said .z u. adapted by its rotation to collect material upon the Hoor of that tank and force it toward the lower end of the screw.
2. A structure as in claim 1 in which the lower end of the cylinder is formed with an opening of smaller diameter than the diameter of the portion above said opening.
3. A pulp bleaching machine comprising a tank having a circular bottom, a shaft having its lower end mounted at the center of the circular bottom of the tank, said shaft having a spiral collector member secured thereto with its outer end adjacent to the periphery of the circular bottom, a screw mounted upon said shaft with its lower end extending substantially to the bottom of the tank, anda cylinder surrounding said screw, said cylinder having an entrance portion spaced from the door of said ta, said entrance portion bein of smaller diameter than the body of sai cylinder.
