Description
NITED STATES ILLiTENT FFIC.
JAMES W. BARSANTEE, OF EAST SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN REAMERS FOR METAL.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,637, dated January Q0, 1&74; appliratior filed November 14, 1873.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, .IAT/rus W. BAnsANTEu,
t of East Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and in the State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvel ments in Beamers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in whichi Figurel is a perspective view of my in1- proved reamer as arranged for use. Fig. 2 is a like view of the several parts composing said reamer, separated from each other, and Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section upon line :um of Fig. l.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The desi gn of my invention is to enable the diameter of a reamer to be increased or diminished, so as to compensate for wear, or to vary the dimensions of the openings that said reamer is capable of making; to which end it consists in the construction and combination of the several parts of the device, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
In the annexed drawing, A represents a reamer, having exteriorly a round form, and
iiuted upon its periphery, so as to produce a series of longitudinal cutting-faces, a, of usual form. Passing through the center, longitudinally, of the reamer A is a round opening, A', which has a slightly larger size at the upper end of said reamer, while, from said opening, two or more slots, af, extend radially outward to the bottoms of the grooves that form the cutting-faces a, said slots having, longitudinally,
such length as to bring their ends within, but near, the ends of said reamer. Within the opening A is fitted a spindle or mandrel, B, which has a tapering exterior, that corresponds exactly to the size and shape of said opening, and, when pressed longitudinally through the same, expands the slotted portion of the hollow reamer in proportion to the degree of motion and the amount of taper given to the bearing-surfaces. The longitudinal position of the hollow reamer upon the mandrel is insured by means of two nuts, C andi-D, the first of which is placed upon a correspondinglythreaded portion, b, of said mandrel, and bears against the upper end of said reamer, while the second nut is placed upon the lower threaded end b of said mandrel, and bears against the corresponding end of said reamer. In order that motion of the reamer around the mandrel shall not loosen the nuts, the upper thread, b, is given a left-hand turn, and the lower thread, b', a right-hand turn, so as to cause said nuts, when rotated by contact with the ends of said reamer, to move longitudinally inward and bind more closely upon i said ends.
As a further means for accomplishing such object, the lower end of the reamer A and the upper end of the nut D arecorrcspondingly cut away, as shown, so as to canse thc projecting portion of the former, a", to engage with the notch d of the latter, and lock said parts together after the manner ot a clutch.
andiby dressing the cutting-faces can be cont pensated for, so as thereby to materially increase the usefulness of the tool. lt' desired, one mandrel can be used in connection with a number of rea-mers having diiierent sizes, and thereby the cost of the set materially reduced.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new The reamer A, provided with the cuttlng faces a, the central opening A', and the longitudinal radial slots a, 'the arbor or mandrel B, provided with the threaded portions I) and b', and the nuts C and D, when said parts are constructed and combined to operate in the manner and for the purpose substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of November, 1873.
JAMES VV. BARSANTEE.` Witnesses:
PETER LownnY, MILLARD D. GRrGGs.
