IMPROVEMENT IN LATH-MACHINES.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,632, dated January 20,1874; application filed November 6, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES ALLEN, of Allegan, in the county of Allegan and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lath-Machines; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a machine for sawing laths, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to de scribe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan View, and Fig. 2 a side elevation, of my machine.
Arepresents the frame-work of the machine, constructed in any suitable manner to receive the working parts thereof. B represents the front table, and (l the rear table, connected to gether by means of a strip, a, and attachedto the frame A by means of L-shaped metallic bars 11 I), attached to the under sides of the tables, the vertical parts of said arms being slotted, and screws 00 90 passing through the slots into the frame. By these means the tables B (J may be raised and lowered at will, as may be desired. In the front table B is an aperture of suitable size, in which is pivoted a series of gages, I) D, having their lower ends extendingunder the table and weighted. V The weighted ends of the gages D I) fall down, and are held by a staple, d, in such a position that the parts of the gages above the table will be gradually higher, one above the other, from the outer to the inner edge of the table. On the rear table 0 is a number of longitudinal guides, e e, forming spaces in which the laths pass. The outer edge from the outer guide e is beveled downward, as shown at y, for the purpose of allowing the waste of the lumber to drop oif by itself, while the laths are delivered separate at the end of the machine. By means of the gages D D the board or strip from which the laths are to be cut may be so gaged, no matter how wide it may be, that the waste will always be just beyond the outer guide 6, and thus keep the same separate from the laths. E E. represent a gang of saws set on a shaft, f, to which the power is applied. Between these saws. and each of the tables B and G are two feed-rollers, G and G, each attached on the end of a horizontal shaft running across the frame A. The shaft of each of the upper feed-rollers G" has its bearings in boxes h h, each of which is placed between standards it 7:. The box nearest to the feed-roller G is held down by means.
of a spring'rod, m, and the box at the other end of the shaft is held between two pivots, t i, which allows the upper feed-roller to rise or yield, according to the thickness of the lumber passing between the feed-rollers. At the rear end of the reartable G is a corrugated roller, II, between which and a flanged pulley, I, the laths are caught as they emerge from between the guides c c. The flangedpuliey Iis placed upon a stud or shaft at the end of a pivoted arm, J, so that the pulley will accommodate itself to the thickness of the laths. The saw-shaft f and the shafts of the feed rollers are connected by means of suitable gearing and the corrugated roller H is run by a belt, as shown.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The gage-bars D, each made of one piece, forming a weight at its lower end, when pivoted by a single bolt in a slot in the icedtable of a lat-lrmachine, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The feed-table 0, provided with guidrs e c, and having its outer edge beveled to allow the waste lumber to fall from the feed-tame and be separated from the laths, as set forth.
3. The combination of the ieedroller G and its shaft, the boxes h h, standards 7t 7:, spring-
