DIES FOR FORMING BOLTS.
Application filed June 26, 1922. Serial no. 571,023.
To all whom it may concern: a 7
Be it known that I, BOUGHTON T. NOBLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plantsville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dies for Forming Bolts; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in-
Fig. 1, a plan view of bolt-forming dies constructed in accordance with my invention, and shown with the stock arranged between them, preparatory to the upsetting operation.
Fig. 2, a side view of the inner faces of one of the upsetting-dies and corresponding backing-die.

Fig. 4, a plan view, partly in section, showing the position of the dies at the completion of the bolt-forming operation.
.Fig. 5, a View similar to Fig. 2, showing the dies in the position of the parts in Fig. 4.
Fig. 6, a plan view of one of the bolts formed in accordance with the method and with the dies herein described.
This invention relates to an improvement in dies for forming bolts, and by the term bolts, as herein used, I wish to be understood as including bolts, rivets, studs, or devices for similar purposes.
The object of this invention is to form a bolt from a piece of stock smaller in diameter than the diameter of the finished bolt, leaving the end to be threaded of the original diameter of the stock, and then rolling threads on the unenlarged portion so as to bring the diameter of the threads equal to the diameter of the body of the bolt, and the invention consists in the dies as hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a pair of upsetting-dies 10 and 11, provided in their adjacent faces with semi-circular grooves 12 and 13, together forming an opening corresponding to the diameter of the shank of the bolt to be formed and which is larger in diameter than the blank to be operated upon. The rear faces of the up,
setting-dies 10 and areformed with pock ets 23 and'24 to receive springs'25 and 26, whlch are seated in pockets 27 and 28 of backing- dies 29 and 30, the adjacent faces is to be formed, is fed between the backingdies and the upsetting-dies, while there is a space between them maintained by the springs 25 and 26, the length of the blank being such that between them, but projects beyond the upsetting-dies sufficiently to furnish material for the head 21 and a part of the shank 20. The two pairs of dies are then brought together to grip the stock between the backingdies. The dies are then moved into line with the usual heading punch 34, which crowds the upsetting-dies against the backing-dies, upsetting the blank, so as to fill the recesses 12 and 13 from opposite ends, and, at the same time, form thehead 21. If necessary, a second blow of the punch may be given upon the stock to fully complete the forming operation, which, however, is substantially performed by a single blow. After the bolt is formed, the dies are separated,
it will not only extendthrough the two pairs of dies and the space 1,
the bolt ejected, and another piece of stock.
fed in its place, all as usual in the manufacture of bolts and similar articles used in bolt-forming machines. The end of the blank may then be rolled to form threads 22 which will bring the diameter of this end ofv the bolt equal to the diameter of the body portion of the bolt.
I thus produce, by practically one operation, a bolt blank having its main portion of a diameter larger than the diameter of the stock from which it is formed. The
method of forming bolts, etc., above dis-.
closed, is not claimed herein, but is made the subject of a separate application, filed June 26. 1922, Serial No. 571,022.
I claim:
1. Dies for forming bolts, comprising a pair of backing-dies formed with grooves corresponding to the size of the stock to be operated upon, a pair of upsetting-dies arranged in line with the backing-dies, said upsetting-dies formed with grooves larger in diameter than the grooves in the backingrlies, means for crowding eaohpa-il Of 1 65*.
