. This invention relates-t0 those metal cutting tools known as 'shapers. When the machine is arranged as a horizontal shaper the upper end of the crank lever is connected directly with the ram that is -mounted in the ways at the top of the frame as is well known to those familiar with this type of machine. To set up the machine as a vertical shaper, the housing is placed on the ways normally occupied by the horizontal ram and secured in position by the gib plates, and the connecting rod is back to the horizontal shaper the connecting rod is disconnected from the leg plates and the gib plates unfastened, then the vertical attachment can be removed and the horizontal ram substituted.

With the mechanism described the pull of the connecting rod and horizontal lever during the down or cutting stroke of the ram'is straight downward so that the tendency of the forces is to pull the housing down upon the frame. There is no upward pressure on the housing when work is being vdone. This ensures rigidity which is essential to accuracy and relieves the housing fastenings of strain so that the desirable condition will exist fora long time.

The combination with a shaper frame having a crank actuated lever, of a housing j secured to the top of the frame, a saddle mounted on the housing, a ram movable up and down on the saddle, a tool holder at tached to the ram, a horizontal lever pivotally mounted in the housing, means joining the lever with the ram, a. connecting rod jointed to the lever, and means projecting from the crank actuated lever, ointed to the connecting rod, whereby the oscillations of the crank lever through the connecting rod and horizontal lever reciprocate the ram substantially vertical. A shaper attachment "comprising a housing adapted to be secured to the. top of a shaper frame which has a crank lever, a saddle mounted on the housing, a ram movable up and down on the saddle, a tool holder attached to the ram, a horizontal lever pivotally mounted in the housing, means joining the, lever with the ram, a connecting rod jointed to the lever, and means jointed to the connecting rod and adapted to be secured to the shaper crank lever.

A shaper attachment comprising a housing adapted to be secured to the top of a shaper frame which has a crank lever with an angular extension at its lower end, a saddle pivotally mounted on the housing, means for adjusting the saddlewith relationto the housing, a ram movable up and down on the saddle, a tool holder attached to the ram, a horizontal lever pivotally mounted in the housing, means joining the lever with the ram, and a connecting rod jointed to the horizontal lever and to the angular extension of the shaper crank lever.
4. A shaper attachment comprising a housing adapted to be secured tothe top of a shaper frame which has a crank lever, a 7

A shaper attachment comprising a housing adapted to be secured to the top of a shaper frame, a saddle pivotally mounted on the housing, a ram movable up and down on the saddle, a tool holder attached to the ram, a horizontal lever slidably mounted on a pivot carried by the housing, a jointed connection between the lever and the ram, a connecting rod jointed to the lever, and means jointed to the connecting rod for moving it up and down.
6. A shaper attachment comprising a housing adapted to be secured to the top of a shaper frame which has a crank lever, a saddle pivotall'ymounted on the housing, a
