Description

DARLINGTUN.
Washing-Machines.
i Pafentedjan. 20.1874.
N0.ll1,6,578A
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN DARLINGTON, OF MAZOMANIE, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,578, dated January 20, 1874 application filed March 29, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN DARLINGTON, of Mazomanie, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Washing-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being hadsto the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
The invention will first be fully described and then pointed out in the claims.
Figure l is a crossfsectional elevation; Fig. 2, a perspective, and Figs. 3 and 4 detail, views.
A A are nprights connected at the upper and lower ends by longitudinal piece B. H is a ii'uted top roll, and C O C bottom and 4smaller plain rolls. Between rolls H and O clothes are passed in the usual way, whilein order tcgirevent them from wrapping, and to cause them to move evenly and surfer a uniform compression, I use spring-pressed guards K-one on each side of the machineand pressing lightly against the outer rolls C C. Suitable springs L L for them may be fastened on the lower connecting piece B. The rolls O are journaled in arc-bearings, balanced by rods E Eon lever F, and swing from link G attached to the upper piece, B, while the large iiuted roll H is journaled in bearings I I that slide on rods J and against springs J. By thus coinbining a series of swinging .lower rolls and a large springpressed top roll, the one pair of springs J J keep all the rolls in their true rela tive position, and do it more eectually than is usually the case, the roll H regulating the position of the subjacent rolls G. M is a bar held by and sliding in a clip, N, on lower piece B, provided on one end with the pivot'ed shoe fm, and fastened by the cam-lever O in any desired position. l? is a hook-bar, which is made fast to one of the side pieces A,`aud fastcned to eyes on the inside of tub, while the bar M that slides through the other side abuts against the opposite side of tub, its shoe m adjusting itself to any inclination. By this device, my machine may be applied to tubs greatly varying in size.
This machine, in its practical ope-ration, works with great facility and efficiency.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
'1. The combination, with the rolls C, of the spring-prcssed guards K K--one on each sideas and for the purpose described.
2. The rolls C O O, journaled in swinging bearings, and the roll H, in sliding bearings, in combination with the springs J J, as and for the purpose set forth.
' JOHN DARLINGION. In presence of l J. C. OOWDERY, B. l. CowDERY.
