JOHN snAMAN, on ANDOVER, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHINGS'MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,891., dated June 1, 1875; application filed July 27, 1874.
To all whom t't may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SEAMAN, of Andover, in the county of Allegany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accoxnpanying (lrawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvernent in washing-maohines; and consists in removable tongues, inserted into the top of the standards, suitable Springs, and adjusting-straps, or equivalent devices, by means of which the pressure of the rollers upon the clothes can be regulated at will, as will be more fully described hereafter.
The accompanying drawings represent my nvention.
a represents two standards, secured rigidly together at their lower ends by the base-piece c and the cross-piece d near their upper ends. To the crank 'end there is secured to the side of the standard a cross-bar, E, which has suitable tenons formed upon its ends, to fit into slots or recesses made in the inside of the tnb, while to the opposite standard there is or cylinder t'. Attached to each end of the cross-piece d is a Vertical rubber or other suitable spring, j, through which passes the adjusting-strap t. This str-ap has one end fastened to the top of the tongue by means of a small stud or catch, n, and has a series of holes through it, so that the tension of the spring can be increased or decreased at will. As the spring is attached to the cross-piece, and as the strap is fastened to the tongue, the full tension of the spring is exerted in drawing the tongue downward, and thus pressing the upper roller upon the lower one. By placing these springs at the top of the mnchine they are prevented from coming in contact with the water, steam, or wet clothing, which so soon cause their decay.
I am aware that Springs of various kinds have been applied to washing-machines for the purpose of regulating the pressure of the rollers, and this I disclaim. My invention consists in the tongue, the regulating-straps, and the peculiar construction of parts, whereby the tension of the springs is controlled.
Having thus described niy inventon, I claim- In a washing-machine, the combination of the standards a, provided with the sliding tongues IL, Springs j, adjusting-straps l, and pins or catohes a on the top of the tongue, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of J nly, 1874.
JOHN SEAMAN.
