Be it known that we, Josnrn Srmw GAUNT, resident oi Manchester, in the county'o Lancaster, England, and HARRY DYSON, res'- ident oi' Huddersfield,England, both subjects of the Kingo Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Connected with the Spindle Mecha` nism of Spinning and like ir`raines,- ofv which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in continuous spinning and doubling machines, and the chief object is to provide an: iinproved method of ,mounting theV spindle whereby'the latter shall turn freely under the tension of the yarn or thread inA order to, impart the' requisite twist to. the; latter and 'this' whenthe nose. of aV cop is being wound near the topy of aspindle; afr'irther advantage of the improved; construction isV that whenv a cop of increased lengthisto be wound' it is necessary for the spindle toA be increased in length tov an'extent that corresponds directly with the increase Vin the length; of the cop,l whereas in those of Aprevious constructions wherethe spindle bolster bearing` was mountedon" the fixed rail, the increasein lengthv ofthe spindle had to be twice the increase in length of the. cop.

The upper portion of the bolster is cut awayrat b affordthe'member jl access to the spin- The portion of the spindle that runs within the bolster is of'uniform thickness and is provided with a flange A1 near its lower end; and the portion of the spindle without the said bolster tapers'slightly and uniformly towards its upper end.- The apparatuslis shown so proportioned that approximately one third of the spindle is contained or enclosed within the bolster leaving the upper two Y thirds exposed: we have obtained satisfactory resultsV with apparatus thus constructed, but we do not wish our invention to be limited to such proportions.
The bearing member G 'comprisesV at its upper portion, a plain bearingG1 for the spindle A; at its lower portion, an abutment or stop G2, against which, during doffing, the flange A1 of the spindle A will come into `contact thus preventing the latter from being withdrawn fromthe bolster B; and between the bearing G1 and the stop G2 the member is cut away, as at G3, to eX- pose the spindle to the drag member jl the remaining connecting portion G4 acting as a support for the'spindle in opposition to the action of the drag. The said bearing member G engages frictionally within Ythe upper end of the bore ofthe bolster, and it is provided with a fiange G5 that rests upon the upper edges of the bolster B asV shown in Figure 2.
rllhe footstep bearing ring F has a very slight lateral play within the bore of the bolster B; and is formed with-a circular recess F1 in its underside and within this recessthe disc F is arranged, the latter also having a slight lateralA play within the recess F1 and being formed with a central hollow or recess f1 in its upper face for the pointed lower end ofthe spindle A. Movement of the ring F is restrained by a helical spring F2 arranged within the bolster B and having its upper end abutting against the stop G2 of the bearing member G.
In theconstruction shown in Figure 2 the foo'tstep bearing F f is shown resting upon the bottom of the bored hole in the bolster. vIn Figurer 5, however, the bolster is shown bored straight through; the lower end is tapped as at b1; and a screwed plug B5 is provided to support the footstep bearing Fv 7. With heavy spindles such as are used' for spinning coarse numbers it may be advantageous to make the rflange A1 removable, and it may be fiXed'upon thespindle after the lower' portion of the latter has been passed through the bolster bearing.

a bolster mounted upon the said rail; a bear ing arranged in the'fupper portion ofthe said bolster, the wall ofthe said bolster and a portion of the bearingvbeing cut away to expose thev spindle and enable the drag to be applied; a footstep arranged in the lower portion of the bolster and a spindle mounted in the said upper and footstep bearings.

In a continuous spinning and doubling machineV the combination of a lifting rail; a bolster mounted upon the said rail; a plain bearing comprising anV upper bearing por-V tion and a lower abutment portion adapted to engage within 'the upper portion of the bolster, the wall ofthe bolster and a portion.V of the bearing being cut away to eXV pose the spindle and enable thefdrag to be applied; a footstep arranged in the lower portion of the bolster and a spindle mounted in the saidv upper and footstep bearings.v
