To all whom it may concern: l 'Be,it known that 1, CHARLES H. HORN- BECK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Appleton, in the county of Outagamie and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices of Power-Operated Paper- Trimming Machines, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to improvements in safety devices of power operated papertrimming machines and has for its principal objects; to provide an attachment, that controls the movement of the power control lever, to produce a device that locks the control lever in inoperative position, to produce an attachment that compels the use of one hand for its sole operation to provide a device that locks the control lever until said device is positively moved and heldwhile the control lever is operated; to provide an attachment that will prevent accidental movement of the control lever; to provide an attachment that can be readily attached to existingv types of paper trimmers, to produce an attachment that can be cheaply manufactured, and in general to produce asuperior and efiicient device of the character described.
The invention consists, in addition to the matters hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the 1 appended claims.

In said drawings 11 is the power shaft, 12 the clutch, 13 the cutter or knife and 14 the connection between the clutch and the knife by which the latter is operated. The clutch 12 serves to afford a separable driving connection in the usual manner for controlling is connected to an oscillatable shaft '34 which extends forwardly and has a lever 15 at the forward end, whereby the shaft 34 is re 3 is a view similar to Figure 2, butlever 15 when in the upright position shown in full lines in Fig. 3 holds the clutch in the disengaged position with the driving connection interrupted, and when moved to the position shown by. dotted lines in 3, shifts or adjusts the clutch to establish the driving connection and thereby operate the trimming knife 13. It is desirable to lock the clutch 12 in the disengaged position so that it cannot he accidentally engaged, and to this end a collar 35 is keyed to slide axially on the shaft 34 and has a radial projection 36 which engages a stationary stop 37 when the clutch is disengaged and prevents oscillation of the shaft to engage the clutch. To release this look the lever 15 is journaled on the forward end of the shaft collar 35 forwardly on the shaft-'34 out of engagement with the stop 37 thereby releasing the clutch shifting mechanism.
The manipulation of the lever 15 to release the clutch shifter and engage the clutch may be accomplished with one hand, and as an extra precaution to prevent accidental engagement of the clutchand par.-
ticularly to avoid accidents by requiring the use of the other hand so that it must necessarily be out of reach of the trimming knife, I have provided an' additional locking deyice for the clutch shifter mechanism as folows:
To the front ledge of the table upon which rests the paperto be cut is a box like piece of metal 21 secured by bolts and nuts 22. Within this box 21 is a rod 23 surrounded by a spring 24. This rod has its inner end slidably secured in an opening in the partition plate 25. The other end of the rod has 24 lies between the artition 25. and this Elli fork 26. A washer 2 may be inserted between the fork and the outer end of the spring 24.
On .the side of the cutting table is secured a bracket 28 upon which is pivoted at 29 a bell crank lever or arm 30. One end of the lever 30 has a hook 32 which is shown in full lines to position shown in dotted lines in Figure 3.-
From the foregoing description it will be seen that in order to move the control lever 15 to operate the knife it is first necessary to swing the arm 30 on its pivot 29 by means of handle 33. This releases the hook 32 from the control lever and permits the operator to move said control lever. It should be understood that upon a single operation of the knife the paper is cut and the power is thrown off. Then the paper is adjusted for another cut or a new supply is positioned to be cut. The operation is as follows; after the paper is properly placed on the table the operator grasps the control lever in his right hand and the arm handle in his left hand. He moves the arm with his left hand, nd because of the spring, must hold it in moved position until he operates the control lever. While the left hand is thus occupied it cannot be otherwise used and accidents are prevented.
The various details of the invention may be changed or modified considerably without departing from the spirit of the invention and I do not wish to be limited except as specified in the appended claims.
I claim:-
1. The combination with a ower operated cutter and a clutch for t rowing the same into operation, of a clutch shifter, a lock therefor, said shifter being movable and independently of its clutch shifting movement, connections operable by such independent movement of the shifter for releasing said lock, a second independently releasable lock for preventing the clutch closing movement of said shifter, the latter lock comprising a pivoted arm having a hook at one end thereof adapted to interlock with the clutch shifter, a handle for Q I t 1,465,430's.

lever operable'to adjust the clutch and having locking means releasable by preliminary movement of the lever, a bell crank, a hook on said crank for securing the lever against clutch adjustment operation, means for moving said bell crank to release the lever, a rod secured to the bell crank, and a spring surrounding said rod and exerting tension for holding said arm and hook in engagement with the lever.
4. In a paper cutting machine, the combination of a paper support, a cutter, a, power driven member for operating the cutter and having a clutch connection therewith, a clutch shifting lever havin a double movement whereby the lever is rst released and then operable to shift the clutch, a pivoted bell crank, a hook on one end of the bell crank adapted to prevent clutch shifting movement of the lever, a handle on the opposite end of said bell crank for moving the hook from engagement with the lever, an arm pivoted to said bell crank substantially intermediate of the bell crank pivot and the handle, and a compression spring surroundmg the pivoted arm for forcing and hold-- ing the hook on the crank lever into engagement with said lever.
