'T01 all whom t concern:
Be it lrnownthatl, ARTHUR A. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tebbetts, in the county ofCallalway and State of Missouri,`h'ave invented certain new and useful improvements in Flue Stoppers, of
which the followingis a. specification, ref
erence being had to the accompanying drawings. i i V' rIhis invention relates lto certain improvements in flue Stoppers and it is an object of the inventionto provide a device of this general character embodying novel Vand improved meansawhereby the stopper is effectively maintained in applied position.
Itis also an object of the invention to provide a novel andimproved device of thisV general character wherein the stopper is operatively engaged with relatively movable members adapted to engage the walls of a flue or the like whereby the stopper is effectively maintained in Vapplied position.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of` my improved flue stopper whereby certain impor- .tant advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe-the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 isa view partly in section and partly in top plan illustrating a flue stopper constructed in accordance. with an embodiment of my invention and in applied position,
Figure 2 is a sectional `view taken substantially on the line 2 2 of Figure l.
Figure 3 is a view in perspective of the hoolr carrying shank and the part-associated therewith, the same being shown in separated relation.
As disclosed inthe accompanying drawings, l denotes a stopper or cover of requisite dimensions and which is adapted to be disposed over the outer or open end of a flue opening. Extending axially through the stopper or co-ver l is a member'2 provided at its outer end with an enlargement or head 3 which has close contact with the stopper or cover l when the device is `in applied position. The opposite or inner end yportion' of the member 2 is tubular as at 4 and has in threaded engagement 'therewith 60 anelongated member or rod 5. The outer end portion of the rod-5 is provided with an inwardly facing hook@ which is adaptedto be engaged overan elongated nut 7.
`Engaged with -t-he opposite end portions @5 of the nut 7 are the reversely threaded rods 8 provided at their outer ends with the arcuate cross members or braces 9 which, when the device is `in applied position, are adapted to have close contact with the inner 'm walls of the flue opening F. The rods 8 outwardly of the feet or braces 9 are continued by the angularly related pointed members l() which are adapted to penetrate the walls of the flue opening when the device is applied, said pointed members 10 are disposed toward the outer or open end of the flue opening so that it will be assured that the device. will be effectively maintained in applied position.
In applying my improved stopper, the nut 7 and the members directly associated therewith are first suitably positioned within the flue opening and the nut turned in a directionto force the rods 8 outwardly to 85 cause the feet or braces 9 to have close contact with the inner walls ofthe iiue opening and at the same time to e'ect the requisite penetration of the pointed members 10. The hook 6 of the member or rod 5 is then en- 90 gaged over the nut 7, said nut at its central portion being provided with a peripheral groove 11 to receive said hook. The stopper or cap l is then applied with the member 2 in properthreaded engagement with the 95 member or rod 5 and by proper rotation of the member 2, preferably through the instrumentality of the enlargement or head 3 the stopper or cover l is effectively maintained in applied position.
From the foregoing description it is thoughtto be obvious that a flue stopper constructedV in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing'from the principles and spirit-thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precisek arrangement and formation of g ,Y Y Y 1,465,228
the Several parts herein Shawn in eert-ying out my invention in practice except as here'- inafter claimed.
I claim:
