ers, of which the following is a specifica tion.
simple and efficient device for settiiig or holding nails in positions which areinaccessible under normal conditions or are accessible with difficulty or where the holding of the nail while applying the impact of the hammer or driving tool is impossible; and with this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a-preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side view, and
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of a tool embodying the invention.
The device consists of a-plunger 1O slidingly fitted in a guide sleeve 11 which carries swinging jaws 12 adapted for the engagement of a nail 13 and for holding the nail so engaged in a position in alignment with the path of movement of the plunger.
In the construction illustrated a plurality of these jaws is employed, each being carried by a lever 14 pivotally mounted as at 15 upon a bracket 16 extending laterally from the sleeve 11 near its inner end, and slidingly fitted on the sleeve is a follower ring 17 connected by links 18 with said levers and adapted by movement parallel with the sleeve to open and close the jaws so as to engage or release a nail. The levers 14 are also preferably of transversely yielding material adapting them to be spread by the head of the nail as it is forced there-between in the operation of driving the nail to its place.
Fitted upon a threaded portion 19 of the sleeve is a thimble 20 having a swiveled engagement as at 21 with the follower ring so that by turning the thimble the follower ring may be actuated to in turn actuate the jaws to engage or release a nail. A nail hav ing been engaged by the jaws and held thereby in the path of movement of the plunger,

the latter may be actuated manually or through the impact of a hammer directed against the impact head 22 at the outer end thereof, to drive the nail to place.
It will be obvious that by means of an apparatus constructed as described a nail may be driven accurately in aposition which can be reached only through a relatively The object of the invention is to provide asmall space or aperture sufiicient to receive the tool which is of limited transverse dimensions and where the use of a hammer under ordinary conditions is impossible, and that the holding and directing of the nail is accomplished by the same means which serves to guide the application of the blow necessary to drive the nail.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A nail setting and holding device having a guide sleeveand a nail impelling plunger slidingly fitted therein, nail holding jaws carried by the sleeve for engaging and supporting a nail in a position in alignment with the path of movement of said plunger, and means carried by the sleeve and operatively connected with the jaws for disposing and maintaining the latter in selected spaced relations, said jaws being mounted for transverse yielding movement adapting them to be spread by the head of a nail as it is forced therebetween, said yielding movement being independent of the spacing by adjustment.
2. A nail setting and holding device having a guide sleeve and a nail impelling plunger slidingly fitted therein, and nail holding jaws carried by the sleeve for engaging and supporting a nail in a position in alignment with the path of m vement of said plunger, said jaws being provided with levers pivotally mounted upon the sleeve, and
means for adjusting the levers to vary the relation between the jaws, and consisting of a follower ring mounted for movement on the sleeve and having link connections with the said levers, and a thimble having a threaded engagement with the sleeve and a swivel connection with said follower ring.
In testimony whereof he aiiiXes his signature.
RALPH L. LONG.
