T0 all whom/t mag/concermr c Be it known that I, CHARLES -v T. KAM- rirnrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Niagara Falls, in the county of Vlaliagara and State-of New York, have invented certain new. and usefulA Improvements in Galley Ears land Proofs, 0i'- which thei'ollowing is a specification.
This invention relatesV to improvements in printers appliances and has for its'object to provide a galley prooi' bar so constructed that any portion of the matter on 'a galley proof may be instantly located upon its galley or rack. i
Another object of the invention is to provide a galley bar to be used in connection with making galley proofssaid bar'having signs throughout its length for indicating any portion of the matter in the galley or rack. y p
Another object of `the invention is to provide a Vgalley bar having series of signsV throughout its length, ynumbers of the bar arranged throughout its vlength and indicia y throughout its length to designate for what particular job the matter on the galley is to be used with.v
With the above and such other'objects in view as may hereinaftermore fully appear, I have invented `the'device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure l is a plan viewof my galley bar usedin connection with a'galley proof,
Figure 2 isa plan view of several similar bars shown broken away, and,
Figure 3'is a plan view of proof dummied up 'for the makeup. v
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughoutthe following specification and in the several views in the drawings in which l indicates a proof of my galley bar used in connection witha proof of galley matter 2, said barv is formed of a single strip of metallongitudinally divided into three columns 3, 4c and 5, the rst column having inserted throughout its length thereon the word Courier, o r any other suitable word to indicate any newspaper, periodical or publication to which the particular piece of matter 2 belongs. Column 4 has printed throughout its length in relatively large type, said type as shown in this particular instance being arranged in series of letters oi the alphabet arranged alphabetically from the top to the bottom of the bar and each series of letters being graduatedV from the largest letter 7 to the smallest letter 8 in'size.4 The third column 5 is provided with the-number of the particular bar, said number being duplicated throughout the G0 length of said column. It is to be understood that as many of these bars as may be necessary for a printing4 otiice of any particular size may be used, each bar having a separate number andV preferably arranged numerically iromone up, Figure 2 showing bars Number 1,- 6 and 100.-'`
The dummy shownin Figure 3 clearly indicates how matter may be takenfrom any particular numbered galley and used vfor making up the dummy and how said dummy will indicate instantly to the imposer just where to locate instantly the matter of the dummy. j
A rack having numbered galley portions conforming to the corresponding -:numbers of the galley bars is preferably used in connection with these bars so as to simplify the location of any matter desired.
-With this device anyvprinting plant can be thoroughly systematized in this lpar- Vticular branch using this galley bar in connection with galleys already on hand. The prevailing custom is to mark the galley number on each corresponding form of gal- S5 ley proof. This not only requires considerable` time butoften errors arise 'from careless or obscure marking and although clearly and correctly marked and the galley Vfound, time is required to locate the matter 90 on the galley to correspond with the correspondingproof. For lack of time, rthe name of the particular publication is omitted in marking the clipping which further Complicates matters and which is a veryv important feature and absolutely necessary in large'plants where a number oit' different publications are issued within a given period. My galley bar as above described willf4 obviate the marking of the clipljiings and indicate instantly not only the publication Y to which the matter belongs but also its location on the rack and in the galley.
Example: One ot' my galley bars is placed against one side of each galley of matter to be proofed consequently each galley proof includes the imprint ot the galley bar Vas indicated in Figure 1. ln making up a dummy it often occurs that clippings a, b, c, d, etc., (see Figure 2) are taken from as many diilerent galley proofs and are used (pasted together) to indicate how a column, a page, or form of mattei' is to be imposed or made iup. In re'lerring Vto` the dummy oi Fig. 3, the imposer Will see at a glance that the matter belongsto the Cou- Y rier (see 6, coli'inin 3), he will also see that clipping a, is from galley 100; clipping Zi from galley l; clipping c, galley l; and
c ipping d, galley 6, etc; (see third column 5) making it very easy to locate the type in; the dillerentt galleys. "llius, the -maler of vthe dummy, is .saved the time usually re,`
quiredoijmarlingthe clippings, and the Vimposerisisaved thetime usually. spent .in
a series olf type throughout its ters thereon tor indicating in a galley prooil the .particular location in said galley oit certain 'lines' therein.

5. A galley bar having a series oit printing characters thereon, throughout its length said signs being arranged in eolumns, one column indicating a particular publication, throughout its length, another column indicating the bar. number.
GIA galley bar having a ,series of print- Y 'ingcharacterstheieoii, throughout its length saidsigns being Varrangedin columns, one column .indicating a particularpublication, throughout its length, another column findicatingthe bar number, throughout Vits length.4
7. *A galley bar having a series of printing characters thereon, `throughoutits length said signs being 'arranged'in coluinnsfone column .indicating a particularY publication,
. out itslength, each ,of saidmletters being in throughout its length, another column indicating theV bar number, .throughout its length, another column having indicia to indicateanypartieular part of a galley in connection with which the bar is used.
S. A galley bar having letter forming characters alphabetically arranged throughout its length.
9. A galley bar having letter forming characters alphabetically arranged throughoutV its length, eachlot saidletters being in series. 1 `f Y 10. A galley bar having letter forming characters alphabetically arranged throughseries, each series being graduated.
ll. A galley` bar having letter forming, characters, alphabetically arranged throughout itslength, each of said letters being inV series eachseries Y,being graduated, means throughout the lengthot said bar to indicatethe particular job.-` i
12. A galley bar having letter forming characters alphabetically arranged Athrough out its length, eachV otsaid lettersbeing inseries, each series being graduated, means throughout the length of said bar-to indicate the particular job, Vsaid bar being numbered throughout its, length.
18'. A galley bar having a series oiprint ing characters thereon, said characters reading longitudinally oli-said bar. Y
lll.' A galley bar having a series of printingeharaeters thereon, saidV characters reading longitudinally ofsaid bapr,.said charac-4 ters being type high.
'15. ln a device for the purpose indicated, a bar-likememberiadapted to extend longitudinally of the .type galleyor at right angles to the lines of type therein, said-bar- 'like 'member carrying rva column of "raised or reproductive index characters adapted to print a' corresponding column ot characters alongside the printedlines .of the prooi sheet simultaneouslyf*with` thev printing oi'V such lines from the set-up typc. p
