Description

connect at each end with the smoke-space,
dire-box, and the vertical side plates b b b b UNITED Sra'rus 'Muur IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-GENERATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,506, dated January Q0, 1&74; apflicaiion tiled September 4, 1873.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN D. Brauns, ofthe city of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylva nia, have invented certain Improvements in Steam-Generators, of which the following is a specification My invention relates to that class of steamgenerators which have vertical circulating water-tubes in the iire-boX, and whose lower ends connect with the side water-spaces around the fire-box, and their upper ends with the upper water-space which connects with the side water-spaces. The invention consists of a series ot' tubes, which are arranged horizontally in the upper part of the upper water-space, and
whereby the heat is imparted from the smoke to the steam in the upper part of said waterspace, as hereinafter described.
Figure lis a front elevation ot'm y improved generator. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 1s a cross-section at the line x :c
of Fig. 1. Fig. i is a like view at the line y y of Fig. l.
Like letters of reference in all the figures indicate the same parts.
A is the rebox. I3 B B I3 and B represent the water-spaces between the vertical side plates ce e a. ct and head-plate a of the and crown-plate b of the water-jacket O. I) is the ure-place, above which a series of tubes, c, are arranged. The lower ends of the tubes are bent as represented in Fig. 1, right and left, and form a series of arches, against which the heat strikes as it asceuds, whereby it is retained much longer on the tubes than otherwise, for it; more complete utilization. The bent ends of the tubes connect with the plates a a of the tire-box, and communicate with the water-spaces B B. Their upper ends connect with the head-plate u', and communicate with the' water-space B. There a-re openings E E communicating with the water-spaces B B op posite the bent ends of the tubes o, to provide for the connecting ofthe tubes, cleaning them out, Ste. They are covered by ineans of the plates F F, which are confined with screwcharged with heat, generates steam, which occupies that part of the space B above the water-line e. Hence a continuous circuit is made and kept up, the colder water in the side water-spaces descending into the tube and pushing the heated water therein upward, which, in its ascent, accumulates additional heat, and is converted into steam, and by means of a pipe or pipes, (not shown,) in the 4 drawings, is carried to the engine.
G is a cap, which is provided with iianges ff, that are bolted fast to the dangesf f' of the side plates b b of the water-jacket, whereby the smoke-chamber H is formed around and over the crown-plate b of the water-space B. The smoke is brought from immediately under the top plate c of the ire-box, through tubes g, into the smokechamber H at two opposite sides of the fire-box. The tubes pass through the water-spaces B B,\either end bcing couiined in the side plates of the re-box and water-jacket.
The smoke passes through the smoke-chainl ber, as indicated by the arrows, to the exitpipe I. In passing over the crown-plate b' of the water-jacket, a considerable portion of its heat is transmitted to the crown-plate, which is radiated from its inner surface 'upon the steam in the upper part of the water-space B above the water-line e. v
I claim as my invention The combination and arrangement of the series of tubes g with the upper water-space B and the smoke-chamberII, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN D. BEERS. Witnesses THOMAS J. BEWLEY, STEPHEN UsTroK.
