GRINDING MACHINE.
Application filed October 6, 1920. Serial 1%.. 415,127.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HANS LUTZ, residlng at Elmira, county of Chemung, btate ot New York, have invented certain new and 6 useful Improvements in Grinding Machines, of which I declare the following to be a tull, clear, and exact descriptn.
My invention relates to grinding machines and has for its object to providea machine of improved constructionfor grinding the discs or rings or other grinding parts used in the rinding of balls such as are employed in ball earings.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved grinding mach ne adapted to simultaneousl grind a plurality of rings or discs on which the grinding surfaces disposed at different angles to the axes of the rings Another object of the invention s to provide, in a grinding machine, a rotating grinding wheel with improved means for holding and reciprocating the work upon the grinding surface of the wheel.
A further object of the invention 18 to provide improved means for supporting and retating the work in contact with the grinding element. I
With these and other objects in view the invention comprises certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts asi will be hereinafter more fully pointed out and claimed, it being apparent to those skilled in the art that the invention shown and described therein'is susceptible to var ous modifications and arrangements to su1t special or varying conditions, and I WlSl'l it to be understood that the terms which I have used are merely descriptive and not limiting and that it is my intention to mclude any and all modifications which come within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
A construction constituting one embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which t Figure I is a side elevation of a machine embodying the invention.
Figure II is an end elevation of the same, with a portion of the base omitted.
Figure III is a top plan View of the portion of the machine shown in Figure IV with the grinding disc omitted.
Figure IV is a sectional elevation taken on line lV-IV of Figure II.
Figure V is a sectional elevation taken on lines VV of Figures III and IV.
Figure VI is a detailed sectional view taken on line VI-VI of Figure V, and
Figure VII is a plan view of the frame for supporting the slide shown inFigure III.
Like reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, 10 represents a base upon which is mounted a standard 11 having upstanding arms 12 provided with bearmgs 13 adapted to receive a shaft 14 upon the extremities of which are mounted the grinding wheels 15, said shaft being provided between the arms 12 with pulle s 16 and 17 of different sizes to permit tlie shaft to be driven at different rates of speed by means of a belt 18. Cylindrical members 19 are mounted upon the base 10 at opposite sides of the standard 11, and secured by means of bolts 20, the connection preferably permitting adjustment of the cylindrical members on the base. The mechanisms superimposed upon said cylindrical members are similar in construction and a description of one will therefore suiiice for both. Projecting within said cylindrical member 19 is a plunger 22 adapted to support a frame 23, upon which is superimposed the mechanism for supporting and rotating the member to be ground in engagement with the grinding wheel 15. The plunger 22 is adjustable up and down within the cylinder 19 by means of a feed screw 24 rotatable in a head 25 on the upper end of the plunger which is actuated by means of a pinion 26 adapted to be rotated by a worm 27 on a shaft 28 journaled in bearing 29 and 30 on the frame 23, said shaft being actuated by means of a hand wheel 31 rotated by the handle 32 as shown in Figure VII. The screw 24 is threaded through a block 33 supported by an upright tubular member 34.- into which the screw projects, said tubular member being carried by the bottom 35 of the cylinder 19 and secured thereon by means of the screws 36 as shown in Figure IV, it being understood that upon rotation of the shaft 23 by means of the hand wheel 31 that the plunger 22 will be raised and lowered within the cylinder 19 to move the work into and out ofengagement witlrthe grinding wheel 15. The frame 23 is rigidly held upon the plunger 22 by means of the screws 37 which projects down through the central portion of the frame into the plunger. The cylinder 19 adjacent the top thereof 1s provided with horizontal and vertical slots 38 and 39 separating the upper portionpf the cylinder into two parts, each of wh ch is provided with a lu 40 through which extends a bolt 41, which when sufiiclently tightened serves to clamp the upper portion of the cylinder upon the plunger 22 to relieve the strain on the feed screw 24. Beneath the slot 39 the cylinder 19 is provided with a longitudinal slot. 42 through which projects outwardly a stub shaft 43 rotatably mounted upon the plunger 22 in any suitable manner, said shaft being adapted to move up and down in the slot 42 when the plunger is raised and lowered by means of the feed screw 24. Secured upon the shafts 43 are the pulleys 44 and extending from each of said pulleys inwardly are the belts 45 and 46, the former engaging a pulley 47 driven by a belt 48 and the latter engaging the pulley 49 driven by a belt 50, the pulleys 47 and 49 being rotatably mounted upon the opposite sides of the standard 11. The frame 23 is provided with oppositely extending arms 51 having half round bearing portions 52 adapted to receive the opposite ends of a pair of rods 53 which are clamped upon said bearing portions by means of the caps 54 secured by the'bolts 55 as indicated in Figure III.
Reciprocally mounted upon the rods 53 is a slide having transverse portions 56 and 57 supported respectively by the bearing portions 58 and 59 of the slide through which the rods or guides 53 extend. The bearing portions 58 and 59 are split as indicated at 60 and adjacent said split portions are the downwardly extending lugs 61 through which extends bolts 62 as shown in Figures I and V. The bolts 62 are pro vided for the purpose of reducing the size of the bearings as the parts become worn. The transverse portions 56 and 57 of the slide and the bearings 58 and 59 are connected by longitudinally extending side portions 63 as shown in Figures III and V. The side portions 63 are bored out to receive the reduced ends 64 of the bearing members 65 in which are positioned the bushings 66 to receive the opposite ends of the drive shaft 67, one end of which is provided with a sprocket 68 over which extends the upper end of a sprocket chain 69, the lower end of which extends over a sprocket 70 on the shaft 43 journaled in the lower end of the plunger 22 and carrying the pulley 44 which is driven by the belt 45 as previously described. Secured upon the shaft 67 is a worm 71 meshing with the worm gear 72 having a hub-like portion 73 rotatably mounted in the bearing 74 formed centrally upon the transverse portion 57 of the slide as shown in Figures III and IV. The worm gear 72 is held in position upon the bearing 7 4 by means of the screw bolts 75 extending downwardly through the cover plate 76 and into the hub-like portion '73 of the gear, said cover plate being rotatable upon a wearing plate 77 on the top of the bearing (4.
A cam 78 is positioned beneath the worm gear 72 and provided with an upstandingportion 79 extending through the center of the hub 73 of the gear and connected with said cover plate 76 by means of a screw bolt 80, which serves to clamp the cam upon the gear and to cause it to rotate therewith. The cam is adapted to rotate between two rollers 81 and 82 mounted on the upper ends of the bolts 83 and 84 respectively, the latter being adjustable in a slot 85 in the frame member 23 and the former screwed into the frame member as shown in Figure IV. The rollers are held upon the enlarged ends of the bolts by means of set screws 86 projecting into grooves 87 cut in the heads of the bolts. A bar 88 is clamped upon the frame 23 by means of the bolts 83 and 84 and superimposed upon the bar are the washers 89 upon which the rollers 81 and 83 are mounted to rotate. The washers may be of any desired thickness to vary the height of the rollers. The bar 88 is provided at its outer end with a slot 90 registering with the slot 85 in the frame member 23 to permit the bolt 84 and roller 82 to be adjusted inwardly or outwardly to accommodate cams of different sizes, when it is desired to vary the length of stroke of the reciprocally mounted slide upon the rods '53. Mounted to rotate or swing upon the bearings 65 for supporting the shaft 67 is a work supporting yoke or member 91, the extremities 92 of which encircle the bearings, the latter being clamped upon said extremities by means of the bolts 93 which serve to cause the annular flange therein to grip said extremities for the purpose of holding the yoke in any desired position of adjustment suitable to bring the work in engagement with the grinding wheel. The central portion of the yoke is provided with a bearing portion 94 in which is mounted a bushing 95 for receiving the shaft 96, the lower end of which is reduced to receive a pinion 97 adapted to mesh with the worm 71 on the shaft 67 as shown in Figure IV. The upper end of the shaft 96 is also reduced as indicated at 97 to receive the hub-like portion 98 of the grinding disc 99, the grinding surface 100 of which is brought into contact with the grinding wheel 15 as indicated in Figure I, said surface being ground to any desired angle with respect. to the axis of the disc. A
reeaeeo washer 101 is disposed between the bearing portion 94 of the yoke and the hub-like portion 98 of the grinding disc, the latter being clamped and firmly held into position by the nut 102 on the outer end of the reduced por tion 103 of the shaft 90', which is driven by theshaft 67 through the worm 71 and worm gear 97. The grinding surface 104 of the grinding disc 105 is ground in a similar manner to the disc 99, the disc 105 being provided with a hub-like portion 106 carried by the reduced portion 97 of shaft 96 and held thereon by the clamping nut 102 as shown in Figure I. The construction of these parts is thesame as the corresponding parts shown inFigure IV, with the excelption of slight differences in proportion. s previously stated, the swinging or pivoted yoke 91 for supporting the grinding disc or Work piece in engagement with the grinding wheel is adjustable in a vertical plane, the extent of the ad'ustment being indlcated by dotted lines in igure. VI.
During the operation of the machine the grinding discs 99 also 105 are reciprocated back and forth upon the grinding wheels 15, which provides for even wear of the wheels, whereby the wearing of grooves or depressions therein is prevented, it being understood that the reciprocation of the slide, upon which the grinding discs are mounted is effected by means of the rotation of the cam 78 by means of the gear 72 and worm 71 on the shaft 67 driven by the sprocket chain 69 which moves with the slide as the latter is reciprocated.
While I have illustrated and described one embodiment of my invention, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that modifications thereof may be constructed without departing from the spirit of the invention and I wish therefore not to be restricted or limited to the precise embodiment shown except in so far as the same is limited by the appended claims.
