' Application niedirayas, '1922. serial No. 562,942.
To all whom t may cof/warn.' f u Be it known that I, Louis G. Bierens, "a citizen of the 'United States, residing rat Trenton, county of Mercer, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new Iand useful Improvements in WireBaskets and Posts Therefor, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming'a ,partj of the same. ff g This invention relates to improvements in baskets, and especially to garden baskets 'used as receptacles for leaves, papers and other such refuse. The invention also includes a novel post forming a part of the basket and adapted for use as atrellis guard, support for plants, fence post and many other uses.
The especial object of the invention is the provision of a simple and cheap garden basket adapted for the burning of refuse without injury to the basket and which may be shipped flat and readily made up into basket form by the gardener or dealer, as required.
For a full understanding of the invention, a detailed description ofthe invention in its preferred form will now be given in i connection with the accompanying drawing` forminga part of this specification, and the features forming the invention then specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings- Fig. 1 is a side elevation;
Fig. 2 is a plan view;
Fig. 3 is a vertical section; and
Fig. 4 is a detail thereof.
Referring t0 the drawings, the basket may be formed of wire mesh, expanded metal or the like, but preferably wire netting A having top and bottom selvages, respectively, l and 2 is used. The netting A is formed into a cylinder or any other suitable shape with the netting ends overlapped and a plurality of posts 3, preferably of rigid wire are utilized to support the cylinder thus formed and maintain it in basket form. Each post 3 is provided at its upper end with a hook 4, preferably formed integrally therewith by suitably bending the post 3 and near its lower end and preferably on the side opposite to that on which hook 4 is located, with a heavy wire suitably bent to form a leg or prong 5 connected to the post 3 by a side bar or footpiece 6, which may be secured to the post by welding or brazing but preferably by coiling the end of the side bar 6 Y tightly thereabout and soldering. The leg 5 and the portion 8 of the post 3 below the foot piece 6 may hereafter be termed prongs.
For securing the netting A, in cylindrical form, one of the posts Sis` utilized and `se cured thereto at the point of overlap inthe ufollowing manner., The prong 8 is passed through the meshes of thetwo layers of netting A from the inside above the lower selvage 2, and the upper part or selvage l of the two layers of netting is then hooked onto the hook t. With the netting thus held in form, two or more posts 3 are then secured to the single wire netting A at suitably spaced points in a similar manner to form a support for the basket. The side bars 6 thus extend within the basket and form an open bottom on which a pan or other receptacle will be supported, or the basket may be used as a plant support or guard without any bottom other than the side bars. I preferably add a bottom of wire netting cut slightly larger than the cylinder formed by the netting A and forced down against the foot piece 6, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the bottom 7 will be retained within the basket during the emptying.
The basket may be made of any size within the length of the wire nettting by overlapping the ends more or less and may be held rigid by forcing the prongs 5 and 8 into the earth through foot pressure applied to side bars or foot pieces 6. For the collection of widely distributed refuse, a large basket may be mounted upon a wheeled truck and moved about. Among other uses, the basket is especially adapted as a garbage container and incinerator.
' The post 3 is especially handy about the garden, not only as a plant support, trellis support and the like but also as a fence post for single wire or wire netting fences.
It will be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the particular construction shown, as many modifications may be made within the invention as defined by the claims.
What is claimed is:
