Be it' known that we, l/VYMAN EATON and Fnnnnincn H. `WrLLooX, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Tight Test Rods, of which the following is a specication.
rlhe present invention relates to gas tight test rods.
More particularly, the presen-t invention relates to test rods for blast furnaces. In the construction and operation of blast furnaces, precautions are used to minimize the ln constructions as heretofore known and used, however, there has been an escape of gas around the test rod which is ordinarily provided on the top of the furnace for indicating the height of the stock within said furnace.
An object of the present invention is to provide a test rod which, though freely operable will prevent the escape of gases.
A further object is to provide a blast furnace construction having a gas tight test rod which is readily removable and replaceable.
Further objects will appear as the description proceeds.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents in sectional elevation a blast furnace having an embodiment of the present invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a .view on enlarged scale of part of a blast furnace illustrating the present invention.
The wall of the blast furnace is indicated by the numeral 10. At the top of the wall 10 is mounted the member 11, which constitutes sealing means for the blast furnace. The member 11 may comprise the casting 12 and the dome 13, said casting 12 and dome 13 being tightly sealed together by means of the gas seal base casting 14:.
The numeral 15 indicates a test rod adapted to be lowered down into 'the blast furnace from the top thereof. Said test rod 15 rides within a guide pipe 16, which pipe 16 has screw-threaded engagement with a cap 17. The cap 17 provides a close clearance with the test rod 15, which test rod is intended to work up and down in the guide provided by the pipe 16. Said pipe 16 is 192i. serial No. @$5,725.

en the test rod is pulled up clear of the stock, the bot 19 will make an approximately gas tight connection with the bottom of the pipe 16. ln view of this fact, and for the further reason that a close clearance is provided between the cap 17 and test rod 15, the escape of gas around the test rod will be minimized. ln view of the fact that heretofore the construction of the parts about the test rod provided the greatest leak for gases, it will be seen that the present invention constitutes a decided step toward the elimination of esca-ping gases.
One embodiment of the present invention has been described in detail. ll/lany modiiications will occur to those skilled in the art. 1t is intended in this patent to cover all such modifications that come within the scope of the invention as deiined by the appended claims.
llVhat we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the United States, is:
1. A. blast furnace having a hole extending from the inside to the outside thereof, a guide pipe in said hole, a test rod in said pipe, a cap for holding said pipe, and a stop on said test rod adapted to form a closure for said pipe, said cap, pipe, rod and stop being removable and replaceable as a unit.
2. f1 blast furnace having a hole extending from the inside to the outside thereof, a longitudinally movable test rod, a cap for said hole, said cap being provided with an aperture for said test rod, a guide pipe having intimate connection with said cap, said guide pipe being mounted in said hole and CORPORATXN OF ASi?.
