Aug.7, 1923. I 1,464,235, J. BERCZIIK SAFETY RAILROAD JOINT Filed Feb. 19. 1923 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 John B erczK WlTNE5S= ATTORNEY member into and out of opera Patented Aug 7, H3230 new a v l r JGH N BEECZIK, O DARISYIJJGVIN, PENNSYLVANIA.
SAFETY RAELELOAID JOINT.
Application filed February 19, 1923.
To all to/1,0772 "it may concern:
Be it known that l, dorm Bunczrn, a citizen of l lungary. residing at Daisytown, in the county of W: shington and State of Pennsylvania, ha invented new and useful llmproiemen .e .n safety Flailroad Joints of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a railway joint the general object of the invention being to provide a chair for holding the abutting ends of a pair of rails, with a wedge member for holding the ends in the chair.
ilnother object of the invention is to pro vide rack means for moving the wedge ive posit on with ratchet means for locking the rack means with the wedge member in operative position.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several. parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in. the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a plan view of a portion of a track showing the invention in use.
Figure 2- is a section on line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view.
Figure 5 is a view of a wedge member.
Figure 6 is a section on line 66 of Figure 2.
In these views 1 indicates the rails and 2 ti o ties of track. A chair 3 is provided for the adjacent ends of rails. said chair being suitably secured. to a tie, as shown. The chair is provided with a stationary flange 4t which is shaped to engage a part of the base and a part of the web of each rail and the chair is also provided. with the grooved member 5 which. is spaced a suilicient distance from the flange to permit the rail ends to be placed upon the chair and. in engagement with the flange. The side wall of the groove is inclineth as shown at 6 and this 3 is a section on line 3-3 of groove is adapted to receive a wedge member 7, the inner part of which is shaped to Serial No. 620,025.
engage a part of the base and a part of the web of each rail so that who the wedge member is in place the rail ends will be securely connected with the chair by means of said wed e member and the flange l.
1 proviij means for moving the wedge member upon the chair, such means consisting of a. rack 8 formed on the bottom of the member and a toothed wheel 9 which is carried by a shaft 10 which is journaled in the bottom of the chair. The shaft is provided ith. a wrench receiving head 11 and with a ratchet wheel 12 which is engaged by a pawl 18.
From the above it will be seen that after the rails have been put in position and the wedge member placed with its rack in engagement with the wheel 9 the said wedge member can be moved to position where it will lock the rail ends upon the chair by turning the shaft by a wrench or the like to cause the wheel 9 to move the wedge member. After the wedge member is forced tightly against the rails it will be held in this position by the ratchet mechanism. When the rails are to be removed it is simply necessary to remove the pawl out of engagement with the ratchet wheel and then turn the shaft in a reverse direction to move the wedge member away from the grooved member. The rails can then be lifted out of the chair.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim i 1. A rail joint of the class described comprising a chair having flanges thereon one of the flanges being grooved. a wedge member engaging the groove and rack means for moving the wedge member into and out of engagement with the rails.
52. A rail joint of the class described comprising a chair having flanges thereon, one of the flanges being grooved, a wedge member engaging the groove rack means for moving the wedge member into and out of engagement with the rails and ratchet means for holding the wedge member in operative position.
loo
3. A rail joint comprising a chair upon which the railends are to be seated, at stationary flange upon the chair for engaging parts of the rails, a grooved projection on 5 the chair spaced from the flange, a Wedge member having a part engaging the groove, a rack on the bottom of the Wedge member,
a shaft jonrnaled in the chair, a toothed Wheel carried by the shaft and engaging the rack and ratchet mechanism for holding the shaft against retrograde movement.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JOHN BERCZIK.
