To` all wlw m it may nonem.: 3
Be .it lmownthat I, Hmmr SArFoRb, a citizen of the United States residi Little Rock, in thecomty -of ulski, tate of Arkansas, :have invented 'a new' and useful Projectile; and I dc herehyldeclere the following to be a full, clear, and-exact clescript-1011' of the invention, euch `as will en able others skillecl in the art to which it appe'tains" to make .and use the same.
The invention relates to projectiles, and has for its object'to provide a 'device of this character oomp-is a hollowgbody member forming the base o the shell, in which hollow member ie dieposed a can of inflammable liquid, such for instancees gasolina. The cep of the 'shell ie th'eaded onto the hollow member, andi`has Suspended therein a pointed casng in which the bursting charge is placed, such for instanceas dynan'ite and when-thecap becomes crumpled or oollapsed upon impact, the bu rsting charge withn the casingof the ca is detonated and forced through the wel of the gasoline can, thereby gniting the gasoline, and cousequentl i iting the object, with which the -oject' e 'ts.
ith the above and other ob 'ecte in view the invention resid'es in the com ination and arrangement of parte as 'hereinafter set for-th, shown in thedrawingdescribed and claimed, it being understoo that chan in the preoise en'bodiment of the inventon may be made within* the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing Figura 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View through the shell.
'Fig'u'e 2 is a. horizontal sectional View through the nose shell, taken on line 2-2 of Fi re 1.
Re erring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates` the main 'body of the projectile, and 2 the cylindrical chamber therein. Disposed within the chamber 2 is, a cylind-rical receptacle 3, in which an inflagrmable material such for instance as gaeolne is laced, however the end 4 of the receptacle 3 terminates adjacent the open and of the chamber 2. Threaded at 5 on the body 1 of the projectile is a cap 6, which is forned from material which upon impact of the projectile will collapee, the urpose' of which will presently appear. T e outer end of the cap 6 is prefer'ably semiepherical for reducng the resistauce of the shell as it passee through the ar. Axially disposel within the 'chamber 7 of the cep isa casn 8, the lower end 9 of which ispqinted an engages a reinforcing member 10 carried by the endet -of the liqujid re'cep'tac'le. 3, thereby preventng puncturing' of the encl- 4 of the receptacle 4 except is applied to the casin ing of the cap 6 by im act of the pr`ojectile. The outeend 'o the casng 8- is provided with a educed threaded extension 11, which is threaded into the axially disposed arm 12 car'ed the spider. 13 n the chamber 7, which `spider has its arms 14 disposed in apert'ures 15 in'the' wall of thecap. The casing 8 hes dieposed therein plosive materialit, which is nan'te.
In operation the projectile is placed in a un` odropped from an ai'plane. When t e p-ojectle comes into enga ement with an object, such for istance as a uilding, the impact of the shell crushes the cap 6, thereby forcing the spider andthe casing 8 inwardly whic laction will arush the caeing 8 and cieton atea charge 16, at the same time 8 -by the arush-- preferably dyforcing the same into the inflemma'ble liquid` an ex when conside-able force be easily and safely handled without danger of exploding the shell.
The invention having been set fo'th what is claimed as new and useful:
1. An inflammable shell comp a main body portion havi a cylindrcal chamber therein, u cap portion threa'ded on the body portion and having a, chamber thei-ein, a liquid receiving receptacle disposed within the chamber of the main cas ng, a spider djsposed within the chamber of the ca and sup orted by the wall thereof, an axial y di ose arm carried by said spider and exten ing towards the Iiquid receiving receptacle, an explosive charge-receiving casin axially disposed and supported by
