Application filed June 24, 1922.
T aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that l, VILHELM Horrn, residing at Stuttgart, lVurttemberg, German have invented certain new and useful linproveinents in Stapling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stapling devices intended for office use of the type wherein an actuating handle, normally spring pressed to an upper position, carries at its lower end a hammer by means of which a staple is detached from a strip of interconnected staples by the downward movement of the handle and is carried downward against an anvil to force the downwardly projecting prongs of the staple through the papers which are to be secured together, and to turn the prongs upwardly against the papers.
These devices are also provided with a cam which is operated by the movement of the handle to cause the staple strip to be fed forwardly one staple on each reciprocation of the handle.
The principal object of this invention is to improve upon the construction of devices of this character so as to prevent the inward slanting of the prongs of the staples, and thereby preventing the prongs from clogging as they are detached and driven downward.
Considered in its more specific aspects, another object is to provide an improved construction of the cam operating means for feeding the staple strip.
For the accomplishment of these and such further objects as will hereinafter be apparent to those skilled in the art to which this appertains, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification.
Fig. l is a central longitudinal section partly broken away through a machine embodying my invention. showing the hammer in its uppermost position.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal cross section of the machine as seen from the top of F ig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fi 1 show- Serial No. 570,756.
ing the position of the parts after the hammer has justdetached a staple from the staple strip and Fig. t is a similar view showing the hammer at the limit of its downward travel.
In the drawings a designates the case of stapling device, 6 the sup-port for the staple strip, 0 the feed dogs for the staple strip, (Z (Z grooves for the feed slides and e e the feed slides on which are mounted the springs f 7 which carry the feed dogs for the staple strip and the front portions of the springs 7 j are designated by the reference numerals g, g. The hammer it has a lower face it and the feed slides are provided with standards a which have bearings 0 to receive pins Zr carried by the cam Z. The cam Z is provided with a recess m in which is received a pin a carried by the plunger and the inclined faces of the cam Z against which the pin 70 coacts are designated by the reference numeral 37. The upper and lower stops 0 and Q respectively carried by the cam Z limit the movement of the pin a. The usual retaining pawl for the staple strip is designed by the reference numeral 9".
Th operation. of the device is as follows, assuming the parts to be in the position shown in Fig. 1 the handle (not shown) being depressed, the hammer or plunger it moves downwardly cutting the end staple from the staple strip as the inner face of the plunger pin a is passing over the upper inclined face of the. cam Z, the usual spring being provided to hold the face of the cam against the plunger pin. The inner face of the plunger pin then passes onto the lower inclined face of the cam Z and forces the cam backwardly against the action of the spring, the engagement of the pins 7a with the bearings 0 causing the feed slides e e to move backwardly in the grooves cZ CZ. During this backward movement of the cam which is just equal. to the distance between two adjacent staples of the staple strip, the prings because of their inclined rear faces of the front portions g will ride over on the downwardly projecting prongs of the staples and spring into the next space between the prongs, backward movement of the prongs being prevented by the pawl r.
The parts are so proportioned that the spring portions 9 g will be moved backwardly sufficiently to engage the next staple by the time the downward movement of the plunger is stopped by the engagement of the pin 91 with the lower stop 9. As the plunger moves upwardly under the influence of the usual spring (not shown) no substantial forward movement of the feed slides will occur until the pin n passes onto the upper inclined face 19 at which time the lower face h of the hammer it will have passed above the staple strip, the pin a then causing the cam Z to move in the reverse direction and feed the strip forwardly through the parts is, c, e, and f, until the pin a strikes the upper stop 0, the parts then being in the position shown in Fig. 1.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States. is:
A device of the character described comprising a casing, a reciprocating plunger slidably mounted in said caslng, a cam rotatably mounted in said casing, means carried by said plunger for actuating said cam, means to support a strip of staples in said casing, a staple strip feed slide at eachside of said staple support, feed dogs carried by said feed slides adapted to engage said strip of staples, a bearing projecting upwardly from each of said feed slides and pins carried by said cam to engage within said bearings and cause a positive reciprocation of said slides for each reciprocation of said plunger.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
