Be it known that I, PAUL S. WARD, a 'citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of 0hio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whips for Mixing Machines, of which the following is a s ecication.
y invention relates to whips used in l@ mixing machines in the bakers art, and is especially useful in so-called cake mixing machines for mixing the batter or dough,
for cakes and' the like, but is especially designed for beating eggs and mixtures of w light consistency.
It is the object of my invention to provide 'a whip of novel construction which has a raising or lifting eiect upon the material; further, to provide a whip of novel con- 2@ struction which can be made in large sizes employing resilient wires andibe of rm construction; further, to provide a whip of novel construction in which' the wires are releasable and in which new wires may be readily substituted; and, further, to provide a whip ofnovel construction in which the wires areheld in place by means resisting their elasticity due to relative arrangements of the wires and holes for receiving the m same.
The invention will be further readily understood from the following description and claims, and from the drawings, in which latter:

In the exemplifying machine there is a column 11 which supports a vertically movable slide 12, adjustable up and down on Fig. 1 represents a side elevation of so 1928. Serial No. 622,284.
rods 13 by means of an adjusting screw 14, suitably operated. The base 15 has a bowlring 16 swingable thereon on a pivot 17. Thev bowl-ring receives a bowl 18 for containing the material to be mixed or beaten.
The whip, exemplified at 21, is arranged to rotate in the bowl Vand' to have movement in'an annular path about the inside of the bowl.
The whip is arranged to be suitably releasably secured to a whip-shaft 22, as by means of a bayonet slot and pin connection, of which the ins 23 arelocated on the head 24 of the whip and the slots 25 are located 1n a socket-piece 26, secured to the lower end of the whip-shaft. t
The whip-shaft is journaled in a bearing 31 of a planetary bearing-member 32 secured to the lower end of a drive-shaft 33 journaled' in a bearing 34 in the slide, and driven in suitable manner at selective speeds by means of suitable speed-changing mechanism. A pinion`35 is fixed to the Whipshaft, and meshes with an internal gear 36, ixed to the slide. Rotation of the driveshaft 33 causes sweeping rotation of the bearing-member 32 about the axis of the drive-shaft, and travel of the pinion about the inner toothed periphery of the internal to the whip about the inside of the bowl.
The machine parts are shown and d'escribed for a proper understanding of my invention, which relates to the whip, and to emphasize the heavy duties to which a whip of this character, especiall the larger sizes thereof for mixing or beating material having a bulk of a number of gallons, are subjected.
The whip comprises a head, exemplilied at 24, from which a stem 38 depends, the stem being shown lixed to the head by having threaded' connection 39 therewith, and being locked in place by a nut 40.
The lower end of the stem is provided with holes,exempliied at 41, 42, 43., 44, 45,
46, 47, 48., 49. The holes `are arranged step- `wise, one above the other, 'and are also preferably arranged in relative. angular relation about the axis of the stem. The holes are shown extending through the stem.
The head is provided with holes 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 5e, 57, 5s, 59 and e1, e2, e3, e4, e5,
gear, imparting rotation and annular travel 66, 67, 68, 69. These holes are arranged' about the stem and arev shown as extending parallel with the axis of rotation of the stem, but are preferably respectively in otlset angular relation to their mating holes 41', 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48 and 49 respectively.
Wires 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78, 79, which are preferably resilient wires like piano wire, extend between the lower end of the stem and the head, being bulged outwardly as shown at 81, near their lower ends, and bent inwardly, toward the axis of the whip, as shown at 82, above said outward bulges. The lower portions of the wires are shown received in the holes in the lower portion of fthe stem, and the upper ends of the wires are received in the holes in the head.
The number of wires and holes are selective. f
The -lower portions of the wires preferably form loops 83, the bights 84 of which are locatedl in the holes in the stem.
The relationsof the lower portions and the upper ends of the wires to the holes in which these are respectively received is prefeiably such, that the wires are subjected to torsion or bending or both between the mating holes, so as to hold the wires in their holes by the tension of the wires. This is exemplified as accomplished by arranging the locations of the holes in the stem or the directions in which they extend in angularly offset relation to the holesl in the head, as exemplified by the angle 86, or by-having the holes in the lower end ofthe stem and in the head extend at relative angles `to each other, or by having the wires of such length and form as to exert endwise pressure in the holes.
The direction of rotation of the whip is exemplified by the arrow 87.
The lower ends of the wires are relatively helically arranged about the lower end of the stem, with the result that, when the whip is rotated, it has a raising or lifting effect upon the material being operated upon. An upwardly swirling motion is also imparted to the material by arrangement of the lyvires in inclined position in their rotary pat s.
A thorough vmixing and beating of the material, and a thorough inclusion of all the material to the mixing and beatingI action of the whip, and the drawing of all particles of the material into the vortex formed by the whip is thus assured.
In my improved device, further, the wires are readily insertable in assembling the whip and are readily renewable by replacement, making it extremely convenient for substituting worn, marred or broken wires by new ones.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A whip of the character described comprising a head, a stem depending therefrom, and wires between the lower end of said stem and said head inclined about the axis of said stem, and the lower portions of said wires located in relatively stepped positions.
2. A whip of the character described comprising a rotatable head, a stem depending centrally therefrom, the lower end of said stem provided with holes extending crosswise through said stem, said holes located in stepped relations, said head provided with holes arranged about its axis of rotation, and wires passing loopwise through said holes in said stem and having their upper ends located in said holes in said head.
3. A whip of the character described comprising a rotatable head, a stem depending centrally therefrom, the lower end of said stem provided with holes extending crosswise of said stem, said holes located in stepped relations, said head provided with holes arranged about its axis of rotation, and wires passing loopwise through said holes in said stem and having their upper ends located in said holes in said head, the holes in said head and the holes in said stem for the respective wires being in angular relation.
4. A whip of the character described comprising a rotatable head, a stem depending centrally therefrom, the lower end of said Astem provided with holes extending crosswise of said stem and located in stepwise arrangement, said `head provided with holes arranged about its axis of rotation, the respective holes in said stem coactingr with the respective holes in said head to receive wires. said enacting holes located in/elatively angular arrangement, and resilient wires snapped into the holes 'at the ends of said wires and held therein by the relations of said holes and the resilience of said wires.
5. A whip of the character described comprising a rotatable head, a stemdepending lcentrally therefrom, lthe lower end of said stem provided with holes extending crosswise therethrough and located in stepwise and relatively angular arrangement about the axis of said stem, said head provided with holes arranged about said stem, the respective holes in said stem coacting with the respective holes in-said head to receive wires, said coacting holes located in relatively angular arrangement, and resilient wires arranged loopwise with the bights of their loops located in said respective holes at the lower end of said stem andgbent outwardly and then inwardly above their lower ends and having their upper ends snapped into said holes in said head and releasably Mesones a held therein by the relations of said enacting holes and said resilient Wires relatively holes and the resilience of said wires. formed for torsionally holding said wires 6.
