Description

July 31, 1923. 11,463.57]. G. w. BRAME FOLDING SWING FiledDec'. e 1922' ii 6 ii MENTOR I George 2317a "7e.-
ATTORNEY Patented July 31, 1923.
UNETED STAFEd W. BRAME, 01? ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
FOLDING SW'ING.
To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BRAME', a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Swings, of which the following is a specification, containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof.
My invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter particularly described and distinctly claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved folding swing which shall be exceedingly simple in construction, and which may be made in different sizes, as required; is inexpensive to manufacture and easily assembled, as well as very durable, and which invention will, when placed upon a lawn, provide a cool sleeping place for infants and small children in the hot-weather months.
If it is desired to store the swing away in the winter months, the same may be knocked-down and folded into a compact bundle and placed in a closet or other'de sirable place out of the way until again required for use, or if the invention is of infant size, it may be placed in the nursery and used as a playing place for the infants or small children.
In the drawing,'
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my improved folding swing.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of same.
Fig. 3 is an enlargeddetail view of one of the top cross-bars,- detached.
Fig. 4 is a front elevation of one of the folding side supporting-standards, detached, and in a folded position.
Fig. 5 is a detail plan view of one of the rope-clamps, and
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary detail-view of the lower end of one of the folding side sup porting-standards, and the lower cross-bars, showing the manner in which the latter are connected to the said folding side supporting-standards. I
In carrying out my invention, I make use of four folding side supporting-standards, designated by the numerals 1, 2, 3, and 4,
Application filed December 9, 1922. Serial No. 605,807.
and which standards are pivoted together in pairs and form in appearance the letter by means of bolts 5, adjacent their upper ends. v
Said folding side supporting-standards are sectioned about'the center of their length,
and are hinged together'by means of hinges 6, and to prevent them from folding when in use, I provide foursteel plates. .7 that are removably fastened thereto by means of bolts 8 and thumb-nuts 9.
Top cross-bars 10 have secured upon their opposite ends by means of bolts 11, suitable L-shaped brackets 12; between the vertical arms of the latterare detaohably secured the upper portions of the said folding side supporting- standards 1 and 4 and 2 and 3, by means'of bolts 14' and thumb-nuts 15.
Pivotally and detaohably mounted upon the said top cross-bars 10, by means of bolts 16, are braces 17 which are used to prevent the said folding side supporting-standards from spreading apart.
The numeral 18 designates braces which have their upper ends pivotally mounted in common screw-eyes 19, and having hooks on their lower ends and adapted to engage the common screw-eyes 20 that are adjacent the upper ends of the said folding side supporting-standards. Coil-springs 21 have their upper ends pivotally attached to hooks 22 that are screwed or otherwise secured to'the underside of the said top, cross-bars 10, having ropes or cables 23 slidably mounted in loops on the lower ends thereof. I I" Said ropes'or cables23 have one of their ends passed downwardly and then upwardly through suitable rope-clamps 24: to form a loop, and are then clamped in the said ropeclamps by means of bolts 25 and thumb-nuts 26. Said rope-clamps 24 are provided upon their inner surfaces with teeth or serrations 27, for more effectually engaging and hold-' ing the said ropes or cables from slipping, when the latter are under great or little strain. o
Thesaid loops of the said ropes or cables are then detachably connected to suitable hooks 28 secured in any well-known manner to the underside of a crib orseat-bottom 29. I
Pivotally mounted upon the opposite ends of the said crib or seat-bottom 29 are endgates 30, that are adjustable either up or down, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and said endgates 30 are held in the desired adjusted position by any suitable means, such as chains 31, detachably attached to hooks 32 on the said end-gates.
Detachably secured to the opposite sides of the said crib or seat-bottom 29 are sides 33 to which the opposite free ends of the said chains 31 are secured.
If it is desired to raise or lower the said crib or seat, the thumb-nuts 26 of additional rope-clamps 34- are loosened and the said ropes or cables 23 are allowed to slide upward or are pulled downward until the desired adjustment is made, when the thumbnuts 26 are again tightened.
Lower cross-bars 35 have secured to their opposite ends, vsuitable L shaped brackets '36., adapted to engage cleats 37 that are secured to and located vadjacent the lower ends of the said folding side supporting-standards, as shown in Fig. 6.
Then it is desired to fold the swing into a small bundle to be placed away, the coil springs 21 are unhooked from the hooks 22 allowing the-crib or seat 23 to be removed from bet-ween the side supporting-standards, and the sides 38 are then removed, and the end-gates 30 are folded inwardly upon the said crib or seat-bottom 29.
The said top cross-bars 10 and the said bottom cross-bars 35 are then removecLand the said braces 17 are swung back over the said top cross-bars 10, as shown in Fig. 8, and the'said folding side supporting-standards are folded in the position shown in Fig. 4, by removing therefrom the said plates 6, after which the parts are gathered together and "tied and placed away until again required for use.
\Vhile I have illustrated certain details of construction which I deemed to be par ticularly effective, and have illustrated a construction which is very cheap to make and easy to be put up, I do not wish to be limited to these details, as it is obvious that many changes might be made therein without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is 1. The combination of a plurality of folding side supporting-standards which are pivoted together in pairs and sectioned about the center of their length; hinges secured to said sections; steel plates that are removably fastened to the said sections, to prevent the latter from folding when in use; top cross-bars; suitable L-shaped brackets secured to the opposite ends of said top cross-bars; braces having one of their ends pivotally and detachably mounted upon the upper portion of the said top cross-bars, and braces having their upper ends pivotally mounted in common screw-eyes, and having provided at their lower ends hooks adapted to engage common screw-eyes located adjacent the upper ends of said folding side supportingstandards.
2. The combination of a plurality of folding side supporting-standards which are pivoted together in pairs and sectioned about the center of their length; hinges secured to said sections; steel plates that are removably fastened to the said sections to prevent the latter from folding when in use; top Crossbars; suitable L-shaped brackets secured to the opposite ends of said top cross-bars; braces having one of their ends pivotally and detachably mounted upon the upper portion of the said-top cross-bars; braces having their upper ends pivotally mounted in common screw-eyes, and having provided at their lower ends hooks adapted to engage common screweyes located adjacent theupper ends of said folding side supporting-standards; lower cross bars; suitable L-shaped brackets secured to the opposite ends of said lower crossbars, and cleats secured to the said folding side supporting standards, adjacent the lower ends thereof and adapted to receive the said L-shaped brackets.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE W. BRAME. l/Vitnesses J OHN C. HIeDoN, HENRY L. HIGDON.
