To allwhomitmaycomem;
vBe it known that I, SIMONl COOPER, a citizen of the United States, yresiding at Brooklyn, in the county of'Kings and State of New York, have invented 'certain new and useful Improvements in Sealing vMachines, of which the following is a specification.
The subject of the present invention is a machine for applying sealing wires to pails and other containers.
The objects of the invention are to provide a simple, practical and eiiicient machine for the purpose stated.
In the accomplishment of these objects, I employ in combination with means for supporting and holding the pails, mechanism for severing the sealing wires into lengths and for pointing the ends of such lengths towards the supported pail and for then driving such ends into the body of the pail. The invention embodies also other features such as means for upsetting or securing the ends of the inserted wires at the inside of the pail, allof which will appear as the specication proceeds.
In the drawings accompanying this vspeciication, I have disclosed the invention embodied in a concrete, practical form ybut wish it understood that the structure may be modied in various respects without departure from the true spirit and scope of the invention, as defined in the appended claims. I would also have it understood that the terms which I .have employed are used in a descriptive rather than in a limiting sense, .except as may be required by the prior art.
In the drawings referred to, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the machine with parts broken away and other parts shown in section.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of the machine taken. substantially on the of the line 2--2 of Figure 1. v
Figure 3 is an enlarged and broken top plan view of one of the wire bending andvv riving devices.
plane@ y f "now to be descrlbed.
' sealing wires.
The machine embodies, first, a holder or support for the pail being operated upon. This holderI have shown in the form of a head 15 (Figure 2) againstwliich the pail 16 is pressed by a plunger head 17. A pedal lever 19 is operatively connected to the plunger head 17 by,a shaft 18 and surrounding this shaft 18 isa spring 18 which yleldingly holds the plunger head 17 in a raised position. v'
The wire from which the seals are made is indicated at 20, two separate lengths of such wire being shown, each length being fed into the machine by a Wire feeding device, embodying in each instance a carriage 21 sliding on the guides 22, said. carriage carrying relatively xed and movable wire gr1pping jaws 23 and 24, the latter being carried by a bell-crank lever 25 pivoted on the carriage at 26 and connected with one end of a link 27 whose other end is connected with a lever 28, which in turn is con- `View of lthe head portion of the machine, v
understood that the wire feeding device at the. rright in'Figure 1 may be operated by means similar to that disclosed for the feeder at; the left side ofthe machine. lTheA wires r`are advanced by these feeding devices nol through guides 32 into position to be ktaken 'Y by thejwire bending and y driving devices Fourfof the wire bending and driving devicesy arel provided in the y v c machine illus- 9,5` trated,` grouped `radially about the pailfl holder and operating in pairs to bend and drive into the pail the opposite ends of the two lengths of wire cut from the two sources of wire supply. Referring particularl to Figures 1, 3 and 4, it will be seen that t lese devices comprise in each instance, a slide 33 working in guides 34, said slides reciprocating substantially radially of the pailholder and carrying at the inner end thereof a device for gripping and bending the wire. This device, is shown as a ixed blo-:lr or former 35 on the lower face of the slide and an arcuate bending arm 36 carried by the lower end of the shaft 37 and arranged to bend the end portion of the wirey about the stationary former. rlhis bender shaft has secured to its upper end a .lever or arm 38 to which one end of a toggle is pivoted at 39. rllhe two levers, constituting the toggle are designated 4() and 41, the rst of these being pivoted to the bender arm at 39 and the second being pivoted to the rearward end of the slide at 42. These toggles -are operated, in each instance, by a link 43 pivoted at one end to the joint of the toggle at 44 and connected at its opposite end with a rocker arm 45. lhese rocker arms are secured on the upper ends of the rock shafts 46 andr47. Rock shafts 46, in the machine illustrated, f receive motion from the cams 47 on the cam shaft 31 through the medium of levers 48 carrying rollers 49 engaging the grooves in said cams and rock shafts 47 receive their motion from the rock shafts 46 through the medium of the intermeshing gear segments 50 and 51 on their respective shafts. From this it will be apparent that the four toggles are made and broken substantially simultaneously. Adjustable stops are shown provided at 52 to prevent movement of the toggles past thecenters. ln Figures 3 and 4 the toggle is shown in the broken condition, in which the bending jaw is thrown open and it. will be apparent that as the toggle is made or straightened the jaw ywill operate to bend the end of the wire about the former, in the manner indicated, so that the projecting point of the -wire will stand substantially radial with respect to the center of the pail onthe pailsupport. Also in these views there is shown a guiding member 53, for directing the Wire into the bight of the bending jaw.
v'llhe wires are severed in proper lengths by means consisting in the present disclosure of the wire cutter blades 54 (Figure 1) carried by rock shaft 55 which are operated by arms 56 connected by links 57 (Figure 2) withy the arms 58 of bell-crank levers pivoted at 59 andwhose other arms 60.are actu-4 ated by suitable cams on the cam shattSl. The cutters described are constructed to point the wire ends in the act of severing the wire.
After the ends ont a length of wire have incarico been caught by the bending devices of two of the adjacent slides (those at the right or at the lett in Figure 1) and bent inward toward the pail, as shown, the two slides are bodily advanced to drive the inwardly directedv points of the wire into the body of the pail. The means for thus advancing the slides :comprises the arms 61 pivotally mounted on the lower endsof rock shafts 46 and 47 connected at one end by the links 62 with the slides, while the opposite end of each of the arms 61 is connected to the links 63. f
The movement ot these slides is suicient to drive the inwardly bent ends of the wire in through the wall of the pail, as indicated in Figure 8. The projecting ends of the driven wires are then curled over, as indicated at 64 in Figure 9, after which the curled or bent over ends of the wire are flattened down and driven back into the wall of the pail, as indicated 'at 65' in Figure 10.
The means for curling or bending over the projecting ends of the wires are illustrated-more fully yin Figures 5, 6 and 7 and consist in each instance ot a pair of spaced abutments or pins 66 and 67 between which the end of the wire is driven, the rst of said pins being concentric with the shaft 68 which carries it and the second in is eccentric thereto so that in the rotation of said shaft the eccentric pin will wrap the projecting end of the wire about the concentric pin substantially as indicated in Figure 7 Four of these wire curling devices are provided in the present disclosure, the same belng mounted in guides 69 on the head of themachine and being driven. rotarily by pinions 70 on the upper ends of the curling shafts 68 in mesh with a gear 71 on the central shaft 72.
The shaft 7 2 is oscillated, in -theLmachine illustrated, from a cam 73 oncam shaft 31 through the medium ot a cam actuated lever 74 which is secured to the lower end of a.
after the completion of the curling operation (Figure 7), the further rotary movement ot t e central shaft 72 will cause'the curlers to be retracted from the pail. The gear 71 may be of interrupted or mutilated construction to permit of this further rotary movement ot the central shaft for the retraction ot the curlers, the curlers then being withdrawn without rotary movement.
lill@ The pail is centered and supported at the top, in the machine shown, by a frame or head 82 on the lower endrof shaft 72 and which fits into the upper end of the pail as the same is raised by plunger head 17. This supporting head is also here utilized for iattening down the projecting wire ends, it being shown as provided for the purpose, with the anvil or presser shoulders 83 which,
when the Wire ends are driven inward stand to one side of such ends (Figure 6) and which in the rotation of the shaft 72 are caused to override the curled; wire ends (Figure 7) to flatten the same down and drive the points back into the wall of the pail, as shown in Figure 10.
The present machine is controlled so as to stop after the performance of a complete cycle of operations, a one-revolution clutch being provided for this purpose, as indicated at 84 in Figure 1 (right hand end of ligure), said clutch being mounted on the drive shaft 85 which carries at its opposite end the drive pulley 86. This clutch is controlled by a lever 87 (Figure 2) pivoted at 88 and havingvan arm 89 carrying a roll 90 in engagementwith cam 91 on the cam shaft 3l. Clutch lever 8T is also shown provided with an upstanding arm 92 to which there is connected a control rod 93.
In operating the machine, the foot pedal 19 is rst. depressed to lower the presser head 17. After placing a pail on said presser head. the pedal is released and the pail is thereupon raised by the presser head into' engagement with the fixed head 15, it being centered thereon by the anvil-carrying mem ber 82. The handle rod 93 is thereupon actuated to trip the one-revolution clutch. Motion from the drive shaft 85 is thereupon imparted to cam shaft 31 through the medium of gears 94 and 95. The wire feeding devices are thereupon caused to advance, and to feed the proper lengt-hs of wire into the grip of the wire benders on the slides.
The Wire cutters thereupon operate to sever the predetermined lengths of wire and to pointthe ends thus severed. The wire benders then operate to turn the ends of the cut wires inwardly toward the center of the pail. as shown in Figure 1, after which the slides advance and drive the ends of the wire in through the wall of the pail, as in Figure 8. The wire curlers then operate, as shown in Figures 6 and 7. to curl the inwardly projecting ends of the wires. after which the curlers are retracted and the anvils rotate to flatten down the curled ends of the wire. driving the points of the wires into the material 'of the pail. as in Figure 10. The ends of the wires are thus firmly anchored in the material of the pail. leaving loops or stretches 96 of wire at the opposite sides of the pail which can be turned up over the pail cover, as indicated in Figure 12, and then twisted, as at 97, to secure and j cutter, wire bending devices arranged to receive the cut length 0f Wire and to bend the opposite ends of the 'same radially toward a pail on the p ail-holding device the termi- 'nal ends of said wire projectingnbeyond the bending devices and means for advancing the bending devices for driving said bent ends of the cut Wire into the wall of the pail thus held.
3. ln a machine of the character described, a pailholding device, a Wire feeder, a Wire cutter, wire bending devices arranged to receive the cut length of wire and t0 bend the opposite ends of the same radially toward a pail on the pail-holding device, the terminal ends of the wire projecting freely beyond the bending devices, means for advancing the bending devices for driving said bent ends of the cut wire into the wall of the pail thus held and means for turning over the ends 0f the wire at theinside of the pail.
