Description

A.|A; KNOWLES MTOR SLEIGH Filed Oct. 14.. 1922 J flbram Jilin Patented July 31, 1 923.
UNETED STATESv ABRAM A. KNOWLES, *or CANYON FERRY, MONTANA.
' Moron SLEIGI-I.
Application filed. October 14, 1922. Seria1'No. 594, 4i 4 9."
To all whom it'may concern: I
Be it known that I, ABRAM A. KNOWLES, residing at Canyon Ferry, in. the county of Lewis and Clarke and State of Montana, acitizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Motor Sleighs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same. v
My invention relates to improvements in motor sleighs, and more particularly to pro pelling means for sleighs.-
The object of the invention is to provide propelling means coacting with the atmosphere for driving and controlling the direction of a sleigh.
A further object is to provide propelling means coacting with atmosphere and which moves or swings in unison with the front runners of the sleigh. 1
A further object is to provide propelling means for a sleigh which is simple, inexpensive, and durable in construction, easy in operation, and attractive in appearance.
The invention consists in the several features, and the construction, combination,
the several views, 1 represents the body or frame of the sleigh, 2 the rear runners and 3 the front runners, 4- the steering rod having a steering wheel '5' at its upper end, and a gear 6 at its lower end which meshes or engages with a rack 7 mounted on a platform 8 comprising twoblocks. The sleigh is propelled by means of two propellers 9 and 10, preferably five feet in diameter, one mounted at the front and the other at the rear of the sleigh. 7'
The front propeller 9 is mounted on a short upwardly inclined shaft 11, preferably inclined at an angle of twenty;eight degrees, and 12- is a sleeve formed on the upper end 18 of abracket-or post 14 and in which sleeve the shaft 11 is mounted. I
The rear propeller 10 is mounted on the extremeend' of a'driving shaft 16, ex-
tending lengthwise of the "sleigh and sup:
ported bymcans of. brackets 17, 18, 19, and 20 extending upward from the floor 21 of the sleigh.
The front end of the provided with a universal joint 22 which may be of any well known style, and the inner end of the shaft 11 of'the front propeller 9 is operatively mounted therein.
The propelling means for the driving shaft 16 may bethe usual type of automobile engine 23 with sprockets 24 and 25 on the engine shaft and driving shaft, re-
spectively, and an endless sprocket. chain 26 connectin the sprockets; or any other desired motive or "driving power, and connections with the driving shaft maybeusel which are found suitable or desirable.
bracket or post 14 is mounted and secured by means of bolts 32, while the lowerpart 33 of the plate is secured. to the platform or blocks 8 by means of bolts 84, and 35 is driving Shaft 16 is a vertical pivot pin or bolt which pivots the U-shaped plate 29, carrying the bracket and post 14 and propeller 9, to the extension 27 'of the floor for the purpose of allowing of the swinging ormovement of the propeller 9 with the front runners 3.
A cross beam 36, to which both of the front runners 3 are connected, ispivoted centrally to the blocks 8 by means of a horizontal rod or pin 37 in order to provide for the play or motion of the runners.
It will be seen'that the front runners 3, the blocks 8, cross-beam 36; U-shaped plate 29, the post 14: and front propeller 9 all turn together on the extension 27 of the floor 21, on the vertical pin 35 secured oentrally of the blocks 8, and that in turning corners the front propeller assists in turning the sleigh.
I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the specific details of construction and arrangement as herein de-] scribed and illustrated, as it is manifest that variations and modifications may be made-in the features of construction and f arrangement, in the adaption ofthe device to various conditions ofuse, without departing from the spirlt and scope of my invention and improvements. -I therefore reserve the right to all such variations and modifications as properly fall ithin the scope of my invention and the terms of the following claim.
What I claim is i In a motor sleigh, a cross beam, runners secured thereto, a platform pivoted to the sross beam adapted to allow for play be tween the runners and platform, an ex- 10 tension of-the floor, a U-shaped plate secured "to the platform and embracing the floor extension, a post secured to said U- extending through the U-shaped plate and the extension of the floor whereby the said parts are pivotally mounted on the said floor extension.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my ABRAM A. KNOWLES.
