A substantially shaped arm 19 is mounted on the journal 3 between the upper end of the standard and the ratchet 7 and is free to rotate about the journal 3. This arm serves to carry a pawl 20 which is designed for cooperation withV the teeth of the ratchet. Of course if found advisable, one or more of the remaining seats could be of course equipped withthe operating means to enable the work to operate the device to several occupants.
For the sake of clearness, a part only of theradial bars 9 and 13 are shown in Figures 1 and 2, and only a single operating structure has been shown. The pawlv20, it will be seen,
is secured to the arm 19 by means of a pin 21. The pawl is held in contact with the ratchet 7 by means of a tortion spring 22 which is permanently fastened to the pawl on its one end and te the arm 19 on its other end, A sprocket or pulley 23 is fastened to the arm by a pin 24 and said sprocket or pulleyis free to rotate about the pin 241. A flexible wire or chain25 is secured on its one end to the operatinglever 26 and is placed around the sprocket or pulley and secured. at its other end by means of a clamp 27 which is permanently secured to one of the radial bars 9 to render it secure about the pulley or sprocket. A tortion spring 28 is perma-` nently secured on its one end to the outer end of the arm 19 and on its other end to the clamp 27. The operatinglever 26 is secured to the radial bar 9 by means of two braces 29 and held in a positionparallel to the radial bar 9. The braces V29 are provided with a slot 30, and the operating lever 26 sets in the slots provided forthis purpose in the kbraces and is firmly held in place by the clamps 31 but free to rotate about in the slots. A pawl 39 is mounted on the arm 37 and is pivotally secured thereto by a pinaO, the pawl is held in contact with the ratchet 7 by means of a spring l1 which spring is permanently secured to the arm 37. The outer end of the lever 26 is equipped with a tortion spring412, said spring, securely and permanently fastened at its one end to the radial bar 9 and at its other end to the lever 26. It will be seen that a downward pull by the operator on the rope 3a will impart motion to the lever 26 and in turn to the arm 37 which will cause the parts to be Assuming that the operator is in the seatl on which the operatingmeans is arranged and wfurtherfassumin g that the parts are in the position shown in the drawings, it will be seen that when the operator grasps the handle 33 and exerts a pull towards himself a motion will be imparted to the lever 32 and 26 which will be in turn exerted on Vthe arm 19 and they will be momentarily locked and act as a unit to exert a thrust or push against the ratchet, inasmuch as the last named element is fixed, it is obvious that the rotary4 head or carrier will be moved in a direction contrary to the pull exerted by the operator. During the motion the pawl will ride over the ratchet teeth .and the operating means connected with the journal. It will be moved around the latter so that when the operator desires to obtain another pull, this can be done because the parts are in a convenient position to permit it. The operation will be exactly the same if the pull rope is used. It will be seen that the means of operating the device are the same v, when the device is constructed in accordance with the drawings as shown in Figure 4 and Figure 5. By carefully considering the description in connection with the drawings, persons familiar with devices of this class will doubtless be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention, therefore, a more lengthy and detailed description is deemed unnecessary.
From the above description it will be apparent that I have produced a merry-goround possessing the features of advantage enumerated as desirable, and I wish it to be understood that while I have shown and described what appears to be the preferred embodiment of the invention, I reserve the right to make all changes falling within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire ters Patent is l. An apparatus of the class described comprising a base, a tubular standard rising' from the said base, a journal ixedly secured to the top of the said tubular standard, a carrier rotationally mounted on the top of the journal and a shaft depending from said carrier into the said tubular standard, ball bearings' interposed between the shaft and the tubular standard, the shaft and the carrier and the shaft and the journal, a standard rising from the said carrier and a collar mounted thereon, a tubular circular member, clamps rigidly affixed thereto, radial bars depending from said collar and radial horizontal bars extending from the carrier to the said clamps, a circular foot board and seats arranged thereon, vertical side bars depending from said clamps and` supporting said foot board. a fixed ratchet with respect to the carrying device, a pawl and spring to cooperate withsaid ratchet and movable about the latter, a carrying member for said pawl, said'carryingmember having a pulley rotationally connected thereon, a flexible wire passing around the said pulley, clamps and a spring on one of the horizontalk radial bars, an operating lever pivoted on one of the horizontal radial bars by means of said clamps and held in position by means of said spring, said operating lever i having an extension on the outer end which is provided with an eye to insert av pull rope to actuate the device, an actuating lever depending from the said operating lever and equipped with a handle to be used to actuate the device in place of the pull rope.v
