' Application filed August 28,. 1922; serial K055845671.
To all 'whom itmay 00mm.- Be it known that I, MORRIS cago, in the county oficook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Band Dating Stamps,
1 of which the following is a specification.
' particularly those of the type which are- This invention relates to hand stamps,
characterized by the employment of a flexi ble band carrying" the type characters, the band being adjustable soas to present the desired characters at the printing point;
This application is a continuation in part of myco-pending application, Serial No. 184,398, filed August l, 1917, for improvements in time stamps, in which'generic features of thepresent invention have been dis- Y bodiment of the lnvention, showing a por- U011 of the stamp casing; 1 a

tion is the provision of a new construction for a stamp of the sort described whereby accurate adjustment of the type to and upon the printing line may be effected withoutfre quiring direct application of the fingers to thetype.
Anothervobject of the invention is theprovision of such improvements whereby all of the stampinechanism may be enclosed in a suitable housing and the type properly adjusted from the exterior of the housing.
A further object is the provision of a device of the sort described which, by virtue of the present improvements, may be embodied ina structure which maybe manu factured atlow cost, which is simple in construction and positive in operation, so that its accuracy and operability will not beatfected by prolonged use.
Other and further ob'ects of'theinvention will be pointed out hereinafter, indicatedin the appended claims or obvious upon an understanding 'ofthe present disclosure." o o In the drawing forming a part ofi'this specification I have. disclosed two forms in which the invention maybe embodied, the
overcoincsmany of the difli'cultifes inherent first having formed a part of the subject matter ofmy co-pending application; above referred to, and the mo difiedform conforming to certain of the -generic featureswhieh characterize the original form. It is. to be understood however that the. presentationof these particular embodiments inthis application ,is for the purpose :of illustration merely, as the invention is susceptible'jof sacrifice of itsessential features;-hence the further modification adaptation without SHERAS, a cit1- Zen of the United States, residing. at Chi fact that this disclosure is predicated upon certain particular structures isjnot-fto be given the effect of limiting inany fashion, short of its true and most comprehensive v scope in the art, the invention which-I purport to secure by Letters Patent.-
In this drawing it will be understood that Fig. 1 is, a fragmentary detail in the nature of a transverse sectionalelevation' of'a portion of a stamp embodied; i 1 r Fig. 2 is another fragmentary detail in the'nature of a section substantially online 22 of Fig.1; 1 1 Fig.3 is a detail in the nature 'o f'a fragmentary side elevation of .a modified em- Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional eleva and a Fig} is a transverse sectional elevation substantially on line 5-5'of Figlf l.
wherein my invention is tion of said modified stampconstruction; i
Inthe employment of; stamps suchasthose utilized for dating and the like, where in it is necessary or desirable'to change the. printing matter from time to time, difiiculty frequently has been experienced in providing for the etting or adjustment of the type positively and with accuracy and at the same time protecting the hands of the operfl; ator from contact with-the type, which under ordinary usage carries more or less ink and is likelyto soil the fingers. Another important consideration is the housing of the type so that articles into contact with which thestamp maybe brought inadvertently may not be soiledby the ink. Difficulties in accoinnlishingthese objects have been presented bv'the fact that dueto the I naturerof theink commonly employed with hand stamps the operable parts are likely to beeome more 'or less gumined'upjand diflicult' of'ad'justment. The present invention in former constructions, and accomplishes the objects stated above by the provision,:1
conjunction with the type rollers, ofiwheels' 'for actuating them and leversof length adeleversthe wheels maybe actuated to trans' g naeaeao mit the bands to a desired extent in either latter may be housed in a suitable casing through which the engaging portions of the levers project, by virtue of which arrangement the type may be suitably adjusted without bringing the fingers into contact with them.
.The invention will be understood definitely by reference to'the accompalying drawing in detail, lrom which it wi V be understood that the numeral 1 designates a portion of'a frame upon which may be mounted a housing, a fragmentary portion of which is indicated at 2. As a part of one or the other of these members or suitably mounted upon them areprovided the shaft supports in which the type shaft 5 is mounted, preier ably being retained against rotation. Upon this shaft are rotatably mounted the type drums 6, which afford adjustable supports for type 7-.maintained on their peripheries asby means of the type bands 8. ported on the frame is a suitable support 9 arranged for cooperation with the type the printing: point to sustain it in proper position. Of course as many of the type drums 6 may be employed as may be desired, and the type associated with the 'several "drums-formed to print the desired legends. Connected with each of the type drums is a type setting wheel 10, the same being mounted concentrically therewith and beingcquipped atits periphery to facilitate its engagement by means effective to rotate it and. the drum to effect adjustn nt of the type. In association with each of the type setting wheels 10 a lever 11 is pivoted on the shaft 5.. which preferably is held under the restraint of a s ring 12 so as to maintain its longer or manipulating arm in an elevated, I position.
The casing 2 is provided with slots 2 through which the manipulatin r arms 11, extend, so that they project on the exterior of the casing, where they carry nipulatiye wheel-engaging members. Each wheel engaging member comprises aplungger 14 which is sl dably mounted on the lever 11, and-restrained at its outer position by spring 15. At 1ts inner end the wheel-en gaging member is formed to provide a nose lfi adapted to engage the periphery of the type adjusting wheel separate and apart from the type. Figs. 1 and 2-the construction just described. is afforded by extensions of the lever 11 which are folded to afford a tubular men.- ben-for reception of the spring; 15 and a guide upon which a tubular wheel engagring 'memher. is slidably mounted.
In the operation of the device to set th type, themanipulative member 14 resse inwan y until. its nose sh -ages. thetype setting wheel whereupon 'i overthrow, the lever 11 may be actuated 1 Also sup- In the form illustrated inv the t i pedrum which it is intended to opcr- L5 ate The manipulative member is 1% it is automatically disengagedfrom the type wheel, and the lever 11 restored to the T9 limit of movement permitted by the slot The lever may beactuated as many times may be necessary to move the desired type to the intended position and, in eve" c the hand ina reverse direction while manipulative member i l is in enggagr me: with the wheel, so that the type can be backed into the desired t menu tl 1 fashion an augmented pressure may exerted upon the drum 6 that the actu l Inovcinen of the type accomplish extreme ease, and without any shilino: of t finpgers from contact with Th inker' type.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 I have modified the structure above described to the extent of providing a sin manipulative menber operating allot the type drums. .in these figures the ele ments which the structure in common with that above described are designated by like reference characters. In this construction it will he observed that in place of the separate levers 11, I have provide-(la member having the side arms 1'? pivotally mounted on the shaft 5 and connected. by a channel portion 18 extending parallel to to wit in the barrel 19 b a spring 24;. so that 1 nose 22 is of the slot 18. In the casing 2 the slots 2 are connected at end by a transverse slot that interveninr? ,q'uide members 2* are provided. The di mansions of the slots 2 and. connectin slot are such that the barrel 19 may be shifted in theml Normally the yoke member 18 will 'occupy the position illustrated in 3. lVhen it is desired to adjustthe type. the manipulative member is shifted lon itudinal. by
on the member 18, as permitted the 'transyerse slot portion. until it in alignment with the slot 2? associated with then moved longitudinally of the slot 2*, as per mitted bythe swingm r of the yoke member sh ft on the oh ing portion will be projected through aligned slot 18 and into engagement with the type adjusting wheel 10 thereunder. Then, by moving the manipulative member in the slot 2, the necessary movement will be transmitted to the wheel 10 to rotate it, by which movement the type is shifted with respect to the printing point. With the manipulative member thus engaged with the type setting wheel, movement ofthe type either backwardly or forwardly may be eftected so that an accurate alignment may be made.
While I have characterized the invention as pertaining to a band dater, because of the nature of the illustrative disclosure upon which this application is based, it is to be understood that it is not limited either to an arrangement wherein the type is carried on a band, or in which the type are of the character to print dates, as the type, which may be of any character desired, may be mounted directly upon the drums 6, on such radius that their printing faces will extend beyond. the margins of the type setting wheels, or the embodiment may be modified in other details without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
