IMPROVEMENT IN THE ORNAMENTATION OF HAT TIPS AND LININGS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,310, dated January 13, 1874; application filed May 1, 1873. y

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS W. BRACHER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ornamenting Tips for Hats and Caps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure 1 represents a face view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar View of a 1nodification of the same.

This invention consists in ornaments for tips of hats or caps, produced by printing on said tips, first in leaf, and then over the leaf, or along its edges, with ink, in one or more colors, in such a manner that, by the leaf, the ink is prevented from running or spreading; and that the operation of printing can be continued without interruption,it being not necessary to wait until the ink has dried, which is the case if the ornament is first printed in ink; and, furthermore, Various different and beautiful effects can-be produced.

In carrying out my invention, I first print on the tip A for a hat or cap a suitable design in metal leaf of any desired kind-silver leaf being used by preferenee--and on the top of this leaf ornament I print one or more other designs, of the same or of different colors, as shown in Fig. l, where the letter a designates the design printed in leaf, and the letter b another design, printed in ink. By following this course, the printing in ink can be accomplished immediately after the design in leaf has been finished,the leaf requiring no time for drying; and, furthermore, by the leaf the ink is preven ted from running, or from striking through the fabric of the tip, and manifold different and beautiful effects can be produced.

In some cases I print with the ink, not over the surface of the ornament first printed in leaf, but only along its edges, asshown in Fig. 2, and, by doing so, the leaf ornament is brought out distinctly, and a good effect is produced. In either case, the printing in ink can be performed immediately" after the printing in leaf has been accomplished, and no time is lost in waiting until the ink hasdried.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

An ornament for tips of hats or caps, produced by first printing on the tip a design in leaf, and over this ornament, or along its edges, another design or designs in ink, in one or more colors, substantially as set forth.
