TENT
IMPROVEMENT IN DRAWING-TABLEIS.
Specification forming part cf Letters Patent No. 146,300, dated January 6,1874; application filed October 30, 1873.
.To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAnorUs WrLLsoN, of Vineland, county of Cumberland and-Stateof New Jersey, have invented a new Tablet or Slate for Educational IFurposes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description and specification ofthe same, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing. i
My invention appertains to writing, drawing, and music boards, tablets, or slates, so called, used for the instruction of pupils in writing, drawing, designing, and music 5 and its object is, rst, to furnish a useful, cheap, convenient, and durable means by which certain arrangements of guiding-lines adapted to writing, drawing, designing, `and music, impressed, printed, stamped, or drawn on paper or other suitable material, may be used as guides for writing, printing, drawing, and'designing over said lines by a lead-pencil or crayon, so that said lead-pencil or crayon marks` may be easily obliterated by a wet sponge or cloth without damage to the tablet, and so that the writing, drawings, designs,
corrected or redrawn without injury to the surfaceof the tablet; second, to furnish a means by which letters, writing, figures, designs, and studies may be traced and copied, corrected, redrawn, enlarged, cr diminished, above the guiding-lines on the tablet, and then y obliterated without injury to the tablet, so that by frequent repetition of tracing, correcting, and copying by the use of a lead-pea by the pupil. To these ends my invention consists Vinthe combination of a tablet or t-ablets `withiines, writing, designs, 85e., on them,
face covering, which is at the same time fine, hard, gritty, and durable, so as to be nnper l In order that persons skilled in the art may etter understand, make, and use my invention, Ihave shown in the accompanying drawing the character of the principal guidinglines on the tablets, and the general character of the figures, designs, Ste., that may be used in connection with said lines for the purcolor; but they may be of any suitable color,
or colorless. j
After the tablet is prepared as above, either with lines or lines and ii gures, the face is covcred with a thin coat of the enamel mixture above referred to and hereinafter described, which is transparent, gritty, and fine, and is allowed to dry hard. After one, two, or more applications, the surface will be in a proper condition for use.
This enamel mixture referred to, and which AI nd best adapted to the purpose of covering the said tablet, but which I do not claim, is composed of benzine, thirty parts; benzinevarnish, forty parts 5 and pulverized silex or spar, sixty parts.
lVhen said enamel is applied and has been dried, it is hard, transparent, gritty, to receive a lead-pencil or crayon mark, smooth, (by which I mean has an even surface,) and is en! tircly water-proof and durable.
The manner in which my invention is used is as follows: The pupil, with a lead-pencil or crayon, is caused to trace the letters, figures, or shapes of various kinds until he` becomes mechanically familiar with themotions required i to follow their shapes, and with their sizes and proportions, when he is directed to reconstruct them in another part of the same tablet, or on another tablet, guided by the lines in following the original. After the tablet has been lled, the marks are to be obliterated by` the use of a wet sponge or cloth, and thenthe tablet is in order to have the same operation repeated. y
I iind these tablets very useful, requiring very little mental application by the pupil, and teaching him to write and make figures and designs nearly corresponding with the origi nids Without the constant attention of the in structor.
Having now fully described my invention7 Whitt I claim is A drawing-tablet composed of pasteboard or other suitable material, having letters7 Iigures7 or lines, &e., printed or indicated thereon and provided With :t transparent, Waterproof, and gritty enamel coating, substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
