BUNCH BUILDER.
Application filedDecember 15, 1921. Serial No. 522,587.
T 0 aZZ'whom it may concern. I
Be it known that we, FRANK K. Parana and WI L J. JORDAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Columbus, State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bunch Builders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bunch builders,
the object in view being to provide simple,
effective, and reliable means to control the amount of yarn left on quills from automatic looms.
The main object in view is to reduce waste. The invention comprises means whereby any desired length or size of bunch may be built on quills for narrow or wide looms, leaving a very small a'mount'of yarn on the quills for waste, effecting approximately a savlng of ninety percent of the waste now necessary on other types of bunch builders.
A further object of the invention is to provide means such that by changing the length of some pieces the mechanism may be used on and applied to any make of frame. By means of the construction hereinafter described the bunchmay be made at the lowest part of the traverse possible to be made on the spinning frame. When the desired bunch has been built the traverse is started into its full stroke, thus allowing the feeler on automatic looms to be set very low on the quill, this feature of the device allowing the loom to knock out quills that have only a few yards of yarn left thereon.
lVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the mechanism of the bunch builder;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same; and
Figure 3 is an end view thereof.
Figure 4: is a perspective view of our invention shown largely in dotted lines and applied to the apparatus in connection with which it is to be used.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the intern'iediate shaft of the winding machine from which the mechanism of the bunch builder is driven by means of a sprocket chain 2, which extends upwardly over a Sprocket wheel 3 on a rotary worm shaft 1 parallel to the shaft 1.
The shaft 1 is mounted in a bearing o- Y which is mounted on a pivot 6 on a bracket 7 fastened to the frame of the machine. The
shaft 41 carries a worm 8 which is adapted to be thrown into and outof mesh with a worm wheel 9 havlng its journal 10 carried by a brake, a lever 11 is fulcrumed at 12 on a fulcrum support or bracket plate 13. S0 cured to the machine frame.
The worm wheel 9 is formed with a series of holes 141, 15 and 16, either one of which is adapted to receive tripping projection 17 shown in the form of a pin or stud, T he projection 17 is adapted to come in contact with a dog 18 carried by the adjacent end of a slidable tripping member or rod .19,
which passes througha guide 20 secured to the machine frame. The rod 19 adapted to cooperate with a trip lever 21 mounted on a pivot 22, on the machine frame and formed witha shoulder 23 which engages a c espon i g ulder 4 n the u r m lever 25 of the Winding machine. 19 carries a stop collar 26 which strikes against the guide 20 and limits the movement of the rod 19 toward the worm wheel 9 normally holding the rod 19 in the position shown in Fig. 1. The bottom facojof the stop collar 26 is flat and rides against a corresponding flat face 27 of the guide 20,
thereby preventing the rod'19 ;l'Yro-n turning The rod and holding the dog 18 in proper position atall times 'to be acted upon 'by the tripping projection 17 of the worm gear 9. The builder proper regulates the movement of the ring rail and the amount of the bunch made on the bobbin is regulated by the length of timethat the ring rail is. held in one position; this is efifected by the fulcrum lever 25 to which is attached the curved rod to which the builder is connected, thelast named parts being of the usual construction and arrangement Zind are not shown. At a predetern'iined time, regulated by the position of the tripping projection 17, the, rod 19 is shifted longitudinally, thereby pushingasidethe trip lever 21 and releasing the fulcrum lever 25. This allows the builder to begin its operation and causes the ring rail to traverse' yarn on the bobbin. The worm gear 9 is Weighted so that when the worm Sis lifted out of eneasemen h rewith, said Worm gear ill re-- turn to its original or starting-position.
he means for disconn cting the arm 8 from the worm gear 9 embodies a cam face 28on the fulcrum lever 25 which cooperates with a projection 29 on theadjacent end of the lever 11. When said end of the lever is depressed, the other end thereof is elevated. The'last named end of the lever carries a bearing 30 for the shaft 4 so that as said bearing 30 is slightly raised, the worm 8 is moved out of mesh wit'h'the gear 9 thereby terminating the operationof the bunch builder. Such movement of the worm 8 and the shaft 4 is permitted by means of thepivotal connection to the bearing 5 at the point 6. Only a very slight pivotal movement is required and this will not effect the operation of the sprocket chain 2. A retracting spring 31 is interposed between a fixed part of the machine frame and the trip rod 19 to return said trip rod to its normal position of rest shown in Figure 1.
What we claim is 1 In a bunch builder for bobbin winding machines, the combination with the fulcrum shaft lever of said machine, of a trip-lever for holding said fulcrum shaft lever during the bunch building period, and means for actuating said trip-lever to release the fulcrum shaft lever, said means embodying a worm shaft driven by an element of the' winding machine, a trip-wheel, driven by said worm shaft, and. a slidable tripping member adapted to throw said trip lever and operated by said trip wheel at a predetermined point in the rotation thereof.
. .2. In a bunch builder forbobbin winding machines, the combination with the fulcrum shaft lever of said machine, of a trip-lever for holding said fulcrum shaft lever during the bunch building period, and means for actuating'said trip-lever to release the ful crum shaft lever, said means embodying a Y worm. shaft driven by an element of the Winding machine, a "trip-wheel driven by said worm shaft, and a slidable tripping member adapted to throw said trip lever and operated by said trip wheel at a predetermined point in the rotation thereof, and means controlled by said tripping means to throw said worm shaft out of gear with the trip wheel.
' 3, In a bunch builder for bobbin winding machines, the combination with the fulcrum. shaft lever of said machine, of a trip-lever for holding said fulcrum shaft lever during crum shaft lever, said means embodying a worm shaft driven by an element of the winding machine, a trip-wheel driven by said worm shaft, and a slidable tripping member adapted to throw said trip lever and operated by said trip wheel at a predetermined point in the rotation thereof, and means controlled by said tripping means to throw said worm shaft out of gear with the trip wheel, and means for automatically returning said trip wheel to its starting position, said trip wheel having an adjustable tripping projection to enable the size of the bunch to be regulated.
5. In a bunch builder for bobbin winding machines, the combination with the fulcrum shaft lever of said machine, of a trip-lever for holding said fulcrum shaft lever during the bunch building period, and means for actuating said trip-lever to release. the fulcrum shaft lever, said means embodying a worm shaft driven by an element of the winding machine, a trip-wheel driven by said worm shaft, and a slidable springretracted tripping member adapted to throw said trip lever and operated by said trip wheel at a predetermined point in the rotation thereof.
6. In a bunch builder for bobbin winding machines, the combination with the fulcrum shaft lever of said machine, of a trip-lever for holding said fulcrum shaft lever during the bunch building period, and means for actuating said trip lever to release the fulcrum shaft lever, said 'means embodying a worm shaft driven by an element of the winding machine, a trip-wheel driven by said worm shaft, and a slidable tripping member adapted to throw said trip leverand operated by said trip wheel at a predetermined. point in the rotation thereof, and means controlled by said tripping means to throw-said worm shaft out of gear with the trip wheel, and means for automatically returning said trip wheel to its starting position, said trip wheel having an adjustable trippingprojection to enable the size of the bunch to be regulated, means to prevent the slidable tripping member from rotating, and a dog on the last named member in the path of said tripping projection. v
In testimony whereof we have affixe'd our signatures.
