Description

UNITED STATES LEVI W. STOOKWELL, OF RAVENNA, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR HOLDING GAS-PIPE NIPPLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,291, dated January 6, 1874; application filed July 2l, 1873.
To all whom t't may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI W. STOOKWELL, of Ravenna, in the county of Portage and State of Ohio, have invented certain Improvements in Machines for Holding Gas-Pipe Nipples, of Which thefollowing is a specification:
This invention relates to the manner of holding the threaded end of gas-pipe nipples While the other end is being threaded.
The drawing represents a longitudinal sectional view of the holder.
One end of the tube a is screwed fast in one end of the coupling s. The threaded end of the nipple c is screwed into the other end of the coupling s, and against one end of the short rod Or follower d, which slides freely in the coupling s. The follower cl is pressed back bythe nipple against the end of the rod t', which slides in the tube et. There is a slot, b, through the tube a at the Opposite end of the rod The Wedge w is driven or forced into the slot b, and against the end of the rod t', so as to force the other end of rod t' against the follower d, and press the follower cl against the end of the nipple c, and hold it from turning in the coupling s while the other end of the nippleis being threaded. After the nipple has been threaded, the Wedge w is loosened in the slot b, so that it will not force the rod fe'- aga-inst the follower cl, and thereby the pressand follower is not new, as they are described` in Patent No. 141,244 for a machine for holding gaspipe nipples, granted to me and dated July 29, 1873. In that machine the Iod is turned against the follower by means of a Wheel and a screw-thread on the rod and in the tube. In this machine there is no friction against the follower d, as the rod z' is not turned against it tO hold the nipple, and it is therefore unimportant in this invention Whether the rod Ii and the follower d are made separate, as described, or are united so as to form but one piece or rod. The coupling s and the tube a may also be made in one piece of metal, instead of separate pieces screwed together;
The Ycombination of the tube a and coupling s with the rod i and follower d, andthe Wedge w, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
