Description

Patented July 24, 1923.
ITED STATES HARRY v. Bonny, or mancnmun, mrssounr.
. LIIBBIGATING JOURNAL BOX FOR- GAR AXLES.
' p Application filed February 16,1921. Serial mars es.
To all whom it may concern he it known that I, HAnRY V. BoDnY, a citizen of. the United States, residing at .Marceline, in the countyof Linn and State of Missouri, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Lubricating Journal Boxes for Car Axles, of which the followmg is a specification, reference being hadjto the accompanying drawings.
:In a device of this character it is the pur pose to provide a lubricator, wherein through the medium of vibrating movemerits and a capillary attraction, lubricant is fed to the journal along strands of wool waste. y i
Another purpose involves the provision of means for carrying the wool waste in the journal box and holding it adjacent the journal. I j
Still a further purpose consists in the provision of means for steadying and holding the journal in the journal box.
While, the design and construction at present illustrated and set forth is deemed preferable, it is obvious that as a result of a reduction'of the invention to a more practi cal form for commercialpurposes, the mvention may be susceptible of changes, and .the right to these changes is claimed, provided they are, comprehended within the scope of what is claimed. w
.The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as will be'hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed. p
In the drawings I a Figure 1 is longitudinal sectional view through the box, showing the journal Inounted therein, and illustrating the lubr eating means therein.
F igure 2 1s a transverse sectional v1ew on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectionalview through the journal box, showing the journal, the lubricating means and the top bearing for the journal in elevation.
Figure 4 is a detail perspective view of the retaining plate 19.
Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of the bearing plate 16.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the journal boxing as a whole, the lower portion 2 of which contains the lubricant 3 to be applied to thejournal. A car axle 4: is illustrated and it has its journal 5 engaging the boxing. The opposite ends of the boxing.
journal have shoulders 6 and 7, between which the semi-cylindrical plate '8 is operable, This plate is provided with a plurality ofperforations 9, through which strands of wool'w'aste securelyiengage. In other words the plate 8 constitutes a carrier for the wool waste, which engages the interior of the bottom of the cavity 2 of the box. The upper ends ofthe strands of the wool waste engage between the carrier and the cylindrical surface of the journal, and through the medium of capillary attraction, the lubricant feeds to the journal, and lubricates the surface thereof.
The plate or carrier 8 has lateral flanges 10, which are engaged by the bolts 11. The bolts 11 extend upwardly and through the of the boxing, there being nuts and plates 14 and 14 engaged with the upper ends of the springs, and by means of the cotter pins 15, the nuts are prevented from unscrewing. j
Engaged with the upper part of the chamber is a bearing plate 16, which has its semi-cylindrical inner surface 17 engaged with the. journal between the shoulders 6 and 7 The outer face of the bearing 16 is angular as shown at 18, to conform to and engage with the retaining plate 19. This retaining plate is interposed between the bearing plate 16 and the upper wall of the One end of the retaining plate is engaged by the bolts 11 toward the inner choring the retaining plate in position.
The innerend of the bearing plate has a shoulder .21, which is engaged by inner bolts 11, thereby assisting in holding the bearing plate in position.
The journal box is of the general or conventional construction, hence the inner end of the journal box is provided with guides 22 for the usual plate sections 23, which are provided with semi-cireular grooves or cut away portions, which fit upon the journal, to keep out dirt and grit. The upper plate section acts by gravity, whereas the lower plate section bears against the bottom 24: of the guides, though it is obvious that a suitable spring may be interposed between the part of the roller to .ing or any fp 'of waste that would tend to decrease the cost and accomplish the same purpose as wool waste;
The invention having been set forth, What is' claimed as being useful is: j j
1. In a devicefor the purpose indicated,
the combination'with an axle journal, of a journal boxing therefor, the lower portion constituting a lubr cant co'ntalner, a wool Waste carrier comprising a seini-cyllndri'cal perforated plate engaging the under part of the journal, wool waste securely anchored in the perforations and being suspended in the container and engaged between the platean'd the journal for ieeding'lubric'ant theretofsaid plate having lateral flanges,
bolts yieldingly anchored in the upper wall of the boxing and connected to the lateral flanges for suspending said plate,a bearing plate for the upper part of the journal, a i retaining' plate between the upper wall of the boxing and the bearing'plate, saidbearing and retaining plates having operat'ii'e connections with the 'bolts to hold said plates in position,
2. In a device for the purpose indicated,
"the coinbination'with an axle journal, of a journalboXing therefor, the lower portion constituting a lubricant container, a wool waste carrier comprising a sen1i cyli11drical perforated plate engaging the underpart 'of the. journal, Wool waste securely anchored in the perforations and being suspended the container and 'engage'dbetween the plate and the journal for feeding lubricant thereto, said plate having lateral flanges, b'olt's yieldably anchored in the upper wall of the boxing and connected to the lateral flanges for suspending said plate, a bearing plate for the upper part of the journal, a retaining plate betweenthenpp'er wall of the boxing and the bearing plate, said bearing and retaining plates having operative connections with the bolts to hold said plates in position, said connections comprising shoulders at the opposite ends of the journal, between which the bearing plate engages, said bearing plate and the retaining plate having shoulders to be engaged by the bolts to prevent movement of the plates. 1 I
3; In a lubricating journal box, an axle journal, a journal box therefor having means at one end for the reception and support o'fan aXle,a bearing plate in the boxingjitor engagement with said journal, a retaining plate between the upper an of the boxing and the bearing plate, a lubri cant wool waste feed for the 'jou'rnal'including a plate, tensioned bolts operatively mounted on the upper wall or the boxing and operatively connected to the plate carrying the wool waste feed, said bolts engaging the sides of the bearing plat'e, acting to hold the bearing plate in place, and abutmerits carried by the retaining plate and operatively engaging with the bolts, not
only to hold theretaining plate in position 80 to hold the bearing with relation to the bearing plate, but at the same time acting plate in position. I j v l. In a lubricating journaY-boX,"anfaxle journal, journal boxing"therefor, the lower portion thereof"constituting "a lubricating container, lubricant feeding eevice inouri'te'd under and "engaging the journal, a bearing plate, shave and engaging the j ournal, a retaining plate between' the bead-ring plateand the upper'tvalhof the boxing,
means for acljustably"suspending the -luloricant feeding device inoperativep'osition' in the boxing, said supporting means for the lubricant feeding device meluchng hangers,
said retaining plate having abutment inea ns operatively connecting with said hangers, for not only preventing 'en'dwisenioveme'nt of the retainin late, but also acting to hold the bearing plate in operative position 'on the journal.
