My improved machine provides for the automatic accomplishment of both the smoothing of the edge of the glass and the external polishing thereof, and is utilized in connection with-a heater such for instance as-seen at 15 in Figures 1 and 2,'having lower openings 16 upwardly into which the upper edges be projected into the influence of the flame from burners 17 or similar sources of heat. In accordance with my improvements glasses are inserted first in one and then in the other of the openings-16 and successively subjected to the flame of the burners 17 while in' rapid rotation, the operation being so timed that upon withdrawal of each glass from the second opening its edge will havebeen accomplished.
In my improved machine a series of cup shaped upwardly opening glass holders 18 are mounted upon the upper ends of stems 19, the latter of which are ournaled for rotation' and vertical shifting movement in frames 20 secured to the outstanding portions 21 of spaced links of a chain 22. This horizontally upon the upper surface of a table 23 and moves at opposite endsof the tablearound sprocket wheels 24 and 25 respectively secured upon the upper ends of upright shaft-s 26 and 27.
The shafts 26 and 27 rise from the lower plates 28 of a ends of whose upright portions are secured by means of angle plates 30 to the central portion of the table 23 so as to support the latter. The-lower end of shaft 27 is adjustably mounted in the plate 28 and its upper end is similarly adjustable in the slotted supporting bar 32 within the opposite end of which the upper end of shaft 26 is journaled, this supportin bar 32 overlying the table 23 along the ongitudinal axis of the latter and also overlying a'cover plate 33 of the table, below the ed e of which the outstanding links of the chain 22 project. This adjustment of shaft 27 pro-' vides for tightening or loosening of the chain 22 as may be desired.

- Shaft 26 at the opposite end of the table has a wheel 47 secured-thereon and provided with a series of circ'umferentially spaced upstanding pins 48 each of the latter of which is adapted for engagement by the upstandingangular arm 49 secured on the horizontal gear wheel 42 previously described so that the wheel 47 will be partially rotated during each complete revolution of the ear wheel 42 and in this waybring about intermittent rotation of the chain 22. Each shiftin movement of thechain 22 in a clockwise direction shifts a pair of the glass holders 18 to one end of the table upon relatively opposite sides of the longitudinal axis thereof and beneath the heater 'o-pen- 'ings 16 at the same time brings these holdersabove an arcuate elevating plate 50 which isivertically :shiftable below and adjacent to one end of the table 23 upon the I upper end of a vertically-shiftable stem 51.
This elevating plate is of sufficient length to simultaneously engage the lower ends of the stems 19 of two of the cup holders in the operating positions previously described be neath the heater openings so that immediately following cessation of shifting movement of the chain 22, the plate 50 by its upward movement will engage and shift the glass holder stems 19 vertically to project the upper portions of the' glasses 52 upwardly into the heater 15 through its openings 16.
The elevating plate 50 may have, at one end, an adjustable stem engaging screw member 50? as "seen in Figure5 so thateach glass may if desired be lifted higher in the second opening of the furnace than in the first opening. It is obvious from the foregoing that in operation each glass holder will be shifted vertically at successive stages into the two heater openings during intermittent rotation of the 'chain 22 and it is further to be observed that as each glass holder-is shifted toward and from beneath the heater its gear 3 f will engage one of thexidle gears 53 at opposite sides of'the table in mesh with the horizontal gear ,35 so that between shifting movementsof the chain each glass holder while within the influence of the heater will hefrotated to avoid unun'iform heating; At vthe second rotating or polishing station the external surface of each glass will be rotatedrin contact with'one concave face 54 of a polishing head 55, preferably formed of a suitable wood and mounted upon the upper end of a stem 56. This stem is journaled on the cover plate 33 and has diametrically outstanding-arms 57 and 58 the latter of which is engaged by a-spring 59 ready reception of the mixed holder carried glass against its concave face. The. stem 56 yields by rotation as the respective glass 52 continues its movement to the polishing station and, in the next intermittent shifting movement of the chain, passes from said polishing station and out .of contact with the polishing head. v 7 i The elevating plate 50 has'a lower inverted U-shaped piece 60 to which is pivotally connected the forward end of a lever 61 fulcrumed as at 62 upon the upper end of an upright 63 and engaged at its rear end by a springtie whose function is to shift the plate 50'upwardly, cam 37 engaging lever 61 toshift the plate 50 downwardly a ainst the tension of spring 64;, the latter of which operates under control of an adjustable screw stop 65 with which the spring engaged end of lever til-contacts so as to limit'upward movement of the elevating plate. i t

The machine is thus adapted to glasses and tumblers of various sizes from small to those with and without stems, the finished articles being removed and unfinished ones substituted after they have passed the polishing or burnishing station' opposite the gear 53.
It is to be particularly noted that the an ticles are rotated not only when they are elevated within the heater 15 but also while engaged with the burnishing or polishing head 54, at other times remaining stationary except for their intermittent shifting movement with and around the chain 22.
I claim:
1. A machine of the character described including an intermittently moving carrier in the formof a link chain, certain of the links of which have outstanding extensions, upright shafts at opposite ends of' the carrier, a sprocket wheel on the upper end of each shaft, one of which is loose and the other of which is rigid with its respective shaft, means having connection with the last .mentioned shaft for intermittently moving the carrier chain, a
gear revolubly mounted on the other shaft,
means. for constantly rotating the said gear, a frame secured to each of the said link extensions, a glass holder for each of the said journaled vertically slide vertically,and rotate, a gear splined on each stem' and confined against sliding movement therewith in the frame, said gears of said holders being engageable with the first mentioned gear at one end of the carrier, and means at the said end of the carrier for shifting the stems of the holders vertically while in rotation.
2.
