Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,248, dated January 6, 1874 application filed September 16, 1873.

To all whom it may concern.:

Be it known that I, FRANCIS GRAEF, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carpet-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, suicient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand, make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a top view of the device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section in linea: :11, Fig. l.

This invention consists in attaching the carpet to hooks which are connected to strips adapted to be secured to the floor, the strips and hooks being then covered by molding, whereby the carpet will be well stretched and fastened,the fastening concealed and protected, and a neat finish produced.

Referring to the drawings, A represents strips, which will be of length or lengths equal to the sides of the room at the loor thereof. To these strips are secured a series of hook-shaped fasteners, B, each of which may be said to be somewhat of the form of two Ls united at the outer ends of their horizontal limbs ar, which constitute the base of the fastener. One of the vertical limbs b will be driven into the strip B, and the other limb c stands out free therefrom and projects upwardly. The carpet C will be hooked, respectively, on all sides to the fasteners B, and

the strips A drawn up to the sides of the room and secured to the floor thereof.

In cases of tightness of the carpet, lever. age may be obtained from the strip, and the proper stretching and laying of the formerz is insured. i

The strips aiford rm hold of the hand. The slipping of the carpet and harsh work of laying the saine are thereby overcome, and

nailing into the iloor through the carpet is avoided. Since one of the limbs of each fastener stands vertically in the strip, itis impossible for the fasteners to be drawn from the strip by the strain of the carpet, whereby the latter will be held firmly in place.

D represents a molding, which, in cross-section, may be of curved, angular, or other form so as to be somewhat dished. y This molding is laid over the strips B, and the projecting hooks to which the carpet is attached, so as to conceal the strip, the hooks, and the ends of the carpet, and said molding is screwed, nailed, or

otherwise fastened to the strip B. The forward portion of the molding rests just in front of the ends of the hooks to which the carpet is attached, so that the tendency of the carpet to rise from said ends will, in a measure, be avoided, the lowermostend of the molding being below the top of the hooks.

Havmg thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
