.Application filed April 18, 1922.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH J. Boiioon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yonkers, in the county of VVest-chester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Color Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to color boxes used in conjunction with multi-color printing machines, the main object being the provision of a box in which all the members are easily removable.
Another object is to provide a means for preventing the leakage of the printing fluid from the sides of the color box.
Still another object is the provision of a box positive and clean in operation, simple in design, of least number of working parts and comparatively inexpensive in cost of manufacture.
These and other objects will become apparent in the description below in which characters of reference refer to like-named parts in the drawing.
Referring brie'fiy to the drawing, Figure 1 represents a top plan view of the color box and illustrates the vertical guides for the printing roller.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the same and is partly cut away to expose the interior mechanism.
Figure 3 is an elevational view partly in section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the pivot rod for the printing wheel cleaner brushes.
Describing the drawing in detail, the numeral 10 represents the side walls and 11 the end walls of a substantially rectangular box which is provided with a bottom 12. The enclosed chamber 13 formed by said walls and bottom generally contains a printing ink or fluid usually of the slow flowing type and of relatively high viscosity. The upper portions of end walls 11 have projecting peaks 14:. Said peaked portions are provided with leak-proof covers 15.
are vertically movable in the recesses of the guide bars 20, the latter being secured to the side walls 10.
Pivot bars 21 pass thru side walls 10 on opposite sides of the inking roller 18 and have a fiat head at one end thereof. Said bars span the chamber 13 and are retained on the box by Cotter pins 22.
Each of said bars 21 pivotally receives a cleaner brush 23 the upper end of which has follower lugs 24 contacting on the periphery 25 of the roller 18 the central flange 26 of the latter rotating between said lugs 24. Said cleaner brushes 23 are kept in resilient contact with the inking roller 18 by the springs which seat upon surface 14 and are wound about the pivot rod 21 in the manner shown in Figure 1,
The color box in use, is usually secured to a table or moving part which is subjected to a linear travel and comes to an abrupt stop at the end of said travel. At this interval there is a tendency of the printing fluid within the box to overtio-w or spill at the peaked ends, due to the inertia of said iiuid. The baille covers 15 are primarily designed to prevent this by obviously stopping the surging` fluid and baffling same so that it immediately flows to the rest position.
ln use the roller 18 passes beneath the type cylinder and contacts with the latter. 1n so doing said roller is caused to rotate carrying with it a supply of printing fluid which adheres to the flanged periphery thereof. Said printing: ink or fluid is distributed evenly over the surface of the roller by the cleaner brushes 23.
1. A. device of the class described comprising a box member receptive of a. printing fluid and adapted to be secured to a reciprocating table of a printing` machine` peaked ends on said box. a baiile cover formed on said ends. the latte` adapted to prevent the overflow of fluid when the box comes to an abrupt stop. vertical slots in said box. guide members within the box. plates slidable between said guide members. a shaft rotatable in said plates-` an inkin;y roller on said shaft and adapted to dip into the fluid, and means resiliently contacting 5 prisng a box member receptive of a printing Huid and having vertical slots therein7 guide members Within the box, plates slidable between said guide members, a shaftl rotatable in said plates, an inking roller on i0 said shaft and adapted to dip into the Writing fluid, cleaner brushes pivotally mounted in said box engaging the periphery of the printing roller, springs retaining said cleaner brushes in Contact with the periphery of said printing roller and means for preventing the overflow of the printing fluid when said box is brought to an abrupt stop.
In Witness whereof I, aixrny signature.
JOSEPH J. BOHOCK.
