IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR MOVING AND DISCHARGING CARGOES 0F COAL.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,242, dated January 6, 1874 application filed November 7, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN FOREMAN, of Pottstown, Montgomery county, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Apparatus for Moving and Discharging Cargoes of Goal, 860., of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to move or discharge cargoes of coal, grain, ore, &c., more rapidly and economically than heretofore by the apparatus illustrated in the perspective view, Figure 1, Sheet 1, of the accompanying drawing, the main features of the said apparatus consisting of an overhanging fixed jib, A, a hoisting-rope, B, passing over a sheave, a, at the other extremity of the said jib, and an eye, D, for guiding the rope, together with a connecting-rod, E, and lever F, or equivalent appliances, whereby the said rope may be drawn inward and the contents of its bucket H discharged into a chute, J.
The frame of the apparatus consists of a light but strong openwork structure, K, built in the present instance at the edge of a wharf, which is overhung by the fixed jib A, forming part of the frame, and by the chute J, which has an inclined or shelving front, b. (Best observed in the vertical section, Fig. 2, Sheet 2.) At either side of, and at the rear of, the chute there is a platform, (I, to which access can be had by steps a.
The rope B passes directly from the drum of the hoisting-engine over two sheaves, a and a, at the top of the frame and jib, the usual blocks and tackle being entirely dispensed with, and the bucket H is suspended from a hook, f, at the extremity of the said rope, the latter passing through a block or eye, D, suspended by ropes or chains h h from a crosspiece, t, attached to the jib A, andthe block being connected by a rod, E, to an operatinglever, F, which has its fulcrum near the top of the frame and its lower extremity or handle within easy reach of the platform d, all as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing.
It is necessary that the jib should slightly overhang the chute, so that the latter shall not be struck by the bucket in raising and lowering the same; but, when raised above the chute, after having been filled in the boat beneath, the said bucket can be readily drawn inward over the chute by one attendantat the lever F, while another attendant simply tilts the bucket thus drawn in and discharges the load into the chute, whence it is conducted to eye is very materially reduced by arranging grooved pulleys m m within the said eye, as shown in the enlarged sectional view, Fig. 3.
I propose, in some instances, to operate the lever F from the piston-rod of a compressed- I air or steam cylinder under the control of the engineer or of the attendant who stands'at the side of the chute to tilt the bucket; and in other instances, where the loads are light, a simple rope, connected to the eye D, may be substituted for the rod E and lever F.
The advantages possessed by my improved apparatus over the ordinary derrick with swing- I ing jib and tackle may be briefly given as follows The usual blocks and tackle are dispensed with, and a direct perpendicular liftis obtained, so that there is averyconsiderable economy of time and labor, fewer attendants are required, the whole structure is more permanent and durable, and a heavy wire hoisting-rope and I sheaves, a a, of large diameter can be used,
and the hoisting-engine be safely run at a high speed.
I claim as my invention- 1. An elevator in which are combined a projectin g fixed jib, A, a projecting chute, J, and
a hoisting-rope, B, with its bucket arranged to be drawn inward over the chute when raised, all substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the hoisting-rope B, of a block or eye, D, and the within-described conneotions, whereby the said rope may be drawn inward or to one side, for the purpose specified.
3. The eye D, suspended from the jib Aby I chains -or ropes h, substantially as herein described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN FOREMAN. Witnesses W A. STEEL, J. SHnRnoRNn SINGER.
