While all of the different arms provided mi ht be of similar construction, the modifie construction herein disclosed has been found desirable from a constructional and assembly standpoint, the arrangement permitting a compact organization. Each. pair of arms 8, 9, 12 and 13, has extending outwardly therefrom a crank arm 14 which crank arms co-operate with tension springs 15 for continuously exerting a pull on the crank arms effective `for urging the guiding devices, with the exception of the roll 3, inwardly These springs at the same time permit all` of the guiding devices to move outwardly as the diameter of the coil increases.
The inward movement of the guidingdevices may be checked in any desired manner. For this purpose there may' be provided links 16 for certainof the guiding devices, which links are secured at their outer ends -to the bolts which hold the arms in position in the supporting frame and at their inner ends are provided with hooks 17 adapted to engage the axes of the rolls 3. The arms 13 may conveniently be controlled by a stop 18 formed on one of the side standards and adapted to co-operate with an abutment 19 on the' crank arm 14. Each of the springs 15 may have its tension adjustably controlled in any desired manner, as will be ap-- parent. i
In order to decrease the friction exerted on the strip being coiled, the rolls 3, together with the rolls 3a and 3b which are directly carried between the side standards, are all adapted to be positively driven. This action may be accomplished by extending the axes of all of'these rolls beyond one of the side standards2 and connecting thereto one end of a drive shaft 20 having a universal joint 21 at each end thereof. These universal joints may be of any well known construction and are preferably so secured to the shafts 20 as to permit the distance between the universal joints to increase or decrease without destroying the driving relationship. Thisv arrangement will take care of the outward movement of the guiding devices and yenable 'the' rolls to be continuously driven. At their'outer ends all of the shafts 20 may be supported in a supplemental standard 22 having a series of bearings 23 for the shafts. Each of the shafts has secured thereto a gear 24 all of which natanti gearsv are inturn-driven b large ear ,25 mounted on a shaft 26 an adapte to be driven by a pulley 27. ll have also .illusextended and connected to a shaft 2O whereby thepinch rolls trated the shaft for the pulley 6 as being 5 may be driven simultaneously with all of the guiding rolls.
The present invention enables a hot strip to be coiled into compact shape as it is delivered from the last roll stand. As the guiding devices are all movable about axes which are parallel, the strip is caused to form a series of superimposed convolutions so that the entire body of rolled material is maintained in position between the stand! ards 2. In this manner, the possibility of injury to the workmen is negatived and the space heretofore required for the looping of the hot metal may be utilized for other purposes. These constitute advantageous features of the invention.
This invention also overcomes the objections inherent in the use of a hot bed, such as heretofore sometimes used for the strips. The length of the hot bed limits the weight of the billet being rolled, as'the length of the strip produced therefrom must not exceed the length of the hot bed. The present. reel takes care of varying lengths of material vin much less space thanv has heretofore been possible.
I claim:
1. In a reel, a supporting frame. and a plurality of strip guiding devices forming a substantially enclosedv circular unobstructed coiling space and adapted to co-operate with a strip fed to said reel and form the same into a series of superimposed convolultions, said guiding devices being movable outwardly under the action of the material being coiled, substantially as described.
2. ln a reel, a supporting frame, and a plurality of outwardly movable strip guiding devices adapted to co-operate with the strip fed to said reel an'd form thel same into a series of superimposed convolutions, said devices comprising deiectors carrying intermediate anti-friction rolls independently of any interior mandrel, substantially as described. y I

In a reel, a.supporting frame, and a plurality of outwardly movable strip guiding devices ada-pted to co-operate with a strip fed to said reel and form the same into a series of superimposed'convolutions, said devices comprising a series of pivotally mounted arms carrying positively driven anti-friction rolls and intermediate defiectors filling substantially all the space between the rolls when the reel is in strip receiving position, substantially as described.
4. In a reel, a supporting frame, and a plurality of outwardly movable strip guiding devices forming a substantially enclosed circular coiling space and adaptedto co-opecrate with a strip fedto said reel and4 the same into a series of superimposed conneeaeii volutions, said guiding devices comprising spaced dedectors and a series of positively driven rolls carried thereby, substantially as described.
