LOUIS .eaevnn nn, ornnw an, n.

To (ZZZ whom'it may concern:
Be it known that .1, Louis GRAvEURE, ,a subject of the King of Belgium, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful- Improvement in Casings for Smoking Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an outerorna:
mental casing for a smoking pipe and the object of this invention is to provide an article of this character particularly adapted for use in connection with corn-cob pipes or other cheaper grades of smoking pipes which are notgenerally used because oftheirap- It is well known that the ordinary corncob pipe possesses excellent smoking qualities but because. of its appearance and cheapness, it is not generally used.
The main object therefore for this invention is to provide an ornamental casing. for the bowl of a corn-cob pipe or other cheap grade of pipe possessing good smoking qualities, so that the exterior appearance of the pipe will be greatly enhanced and the exist.- ing objections to the use of such a pipe will be obviated. Y
VViththese objects and other objects which may hereinafter appear, in View, I have tie-- vised a particular arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the claims appended'hereto.
Reference is to be had to the accompanybig drawings, forming a part hereof in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a pipe bowl and casing therefor;
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the casing shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a side elevation'of a modified form of casing, and
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view of the casing disclosed in Figure 3 and the pipe I bowl held therein.
Throughout the various views of the drawings similar reference characters designate similar parts.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention as disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 indicates the casing, which is adapted to contain a bowl 2 of a corn cob or other pipe. The casing is preferably of cylindrical or tubular nature and may be made of a polished metal perforated with ornamental designs of any desired character, several of Application 'filed September 21, 1921. Serial uoqsoaaei;
which maybe as disclosed in the accompanyingdrawing. In the formofmy invention as disclosed in Figures 1 and 2, the upper and-lower ends of the tubular casing 1 are threaded at 3 and 4 for the reception of'the top and bottom plates 5 and 6 of the casing. The bottom plate 6 is shown in the nature of a concavoconvex disk provided with internal threads which are received on the threads at. The top plate 5 is in the nature of an annular disk adapted to be, threaded upon the threads 3. The top plate 5 is provided with a central aperture which lies in alignment with the opening in the pipe bowl and-surrounding said apertureis a continuous in wardl T extendin v flange 7 which overlies b an the upper end of the pipe bowl 2 and re tains the same-withinthe casing. From the side of the casing eXtends an interiorly threaded and preferably ornamented boss which is adapted to receive apipe stem'f-l, said stern being provided at its. end with a studlO having a threaded portion 11 which threads into the boss 8. The stud 10 projects beyond the casing andintov the stern opening 12 in the bowl of the corn cob or other pipe 2 held within the casing. I Figures 3 and 4 is shown a modified form of pipe casing which is providedwith readily detachable top and bottom plates 13 i and 1 1. The top plate is provided with'the inwardly extending flange .7, and said top plate 13 and bottom plate Mare each pro-.
vided with a number of'downwardly extending spring lugs 15 which permit said plates 14: and 15 to snap over the ends of the casing 17, said casing being flared at its ends as at 18, to permit said plates 13 and 14c to snap thereover and be fri'ctionally held thereon. It will be seen from the foregoing that I have provided a pipe casing from which the pipe bowl contained within the same is readily removable and which pro-. vides extremely handsome appearance thus obviating the usual objection taken to corn cob and other cheap pipes; It is obvious that my improved casing may be altered in size and design and that the top and bottom plates may be detachably secured in position in many ways, and various other modi lications maybe made without departing from the'spirit of my invention.
hat Tclaim is: 1. An article of the class described prising a casing adapted to, receive a pipe 1 no I coming from one side thereof, a pipe bowl received within said member with its stem opening in alignment with said boss, means on one end of the member for retaining the pipe bowl within said member, and a stem having a threaded end adapted to be received in said boss and into the stem opening in the pipe bowl.
Signed at the city, 'county and State of 20 New York, this 3rd day of June, 1921.
LOUIS GRAVEURE.
