IMPROVEMENT IN DRAFT-REGULATORS.

To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1,-JAMEs M. ADoLPHUs, of the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dampers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand, make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specilication, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device embodying my invention. - and below the top ofthe band A, there is journaled a damper, C, consisting of a disk, which vibrates freely on its axis, and is in diameter smaller than the diameter of the bands, so that a space, D, will be left between the disk and the place of application, which latter is shown by the dotted lines representing, in the present case, a stove-pipe. E represents a vertically-arranged plate, which is secured to the strips B B, and extends from below the disk C to the lower ring, A. A plate, F, extends laterally from the bottom of the plate E, or is a continuation thereof, and it will be seen that when the device is applied in position or properly located the two plates E F form the passage G and cavity H, of which the bottom of the passage G is open and that of the cavity H is closed.
The operation is as follows: When the ire is in such state that the heat therefrom is of a proper temperature the disk O remains horizontal. As the gases from the iire ascend and reach the passage G, as indicated by the arrow No. l, they are checked by the disk or damper C, and a considerable portion thereof caused to remain in the iire and thus be consumed. The lighter matters will escape at the space D. When the draft increases, the increased volume of products of combustion, e11- tering the passage G, causes the disk to rise, and thus enlarge the space D, whereby there is an escape of the said products. The consequent loss of the unconsumed gas decreases the heat passing from the fire, and thereby decreases the pressure on the disk C, which latter then lowers or closes, whereby the escape of gas is checked, and the heat restored to its proper temperature.
The portion of the disk G that moves in the y cavity H need not necessarily be a semicircle. In lieu thereof I may employ a weighted rod.
It will be seen that the partition plates strengthen the supports of the damper-disk O, and properly direct vthe products of combustion to the disk without admission of said products to the chamber H, which otherwise would counteract the operation in passage G.
The bands A A may be made to fit snugly against the stove-pipe, chimney, or otherwise, and thus afford ready means for holding the regulator in place, and moving it for purposes of adjustment.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
